DUMBO - comparison pics *GRAPHICS HEAVY*

DUMBO has had at least 5 different transfers to video by my count on Laserdisc and DVD. Aside from probably the most recent DVD, I'm sure all of the other transfers were on VHS at various times too, though the many repackagings and such would make them more difficult to track.

I didn't know each Laserdisc had a different transfer, yet the last two were billed as "restored", but then again so are both DVD releases...

I used VLC to make the captures and did not apply any additional compression. The Laserdisc captures were made from DVDs made from those discs with no changes in color/contrast/brightness. I'm trying to see if I have something set wrong in VLC that causes the images to be so compressed, so I apologize for any blockiness. I also apologize that sometimes the images are a frame or two off, but if you knew how hard it was to press PAUSE in VLC and try to get the exact frame... And to do it for 5 different transfers...

overall, the 2006 transfer looks to be the best even though some 2001 transfer sequences appear questionably better, especially the darker backgrounds with the pink elephants.

Wow, I really need to get the 2006 Dumbo. I have the previous one though. Think I'll be fine with my older Robin Hood DVD, but I wonder, do you plan to do a comparison of Fox and the Hound as well? I need to decide about that one too (and still need to pick up the sequel).

Look at the screenshot of Dumbo jumping out of the burning building.
Can someone please tell me what's with Dumbo's face/head?
It looks like plastic/rubber, like there's some layer over the whole picture.
This seems to be the case with all the new restorations.

I also don't like the one where Dumbo and his mother stand in the yellow tent. She's smiling at him. The color of her skin is so solid, dark grey, one big patch. No lighter/darker shades whatsoever. No atmosphere lighting.

I'm so glad I have the older transfers. They look beautiful.

When do they learn that grain is a good thing? The 2001 looks way sharper than the 2006. The colors are a mixed bag here. The 2006 is too dark to my opinion, but it's colors are the same as some of the laserdiscs.
And also what is wrong with the big splotch on the clown by the 'The End' title card? It appears only on some of the screenshots. Is it dirt?

I was thinking the same thing. I have the 2001 DVD, and I'm not planning on getting the Big Top Edition, but it's nice to see the slight differences.

I didn't like the total brightness (the over saturatedness that Marky_198 mentioned, I guess) in the 1991 Laserdisc.

It's a reel change marker, to let the projectionist know when the current reel ends (and when to start the next one). You only ever see them on prints - they're not on the original negatives.

The 1991 "restoration" is bloody awful - (a) they've used a print as the master material and (b) turned the chroma up to 11. Uck!

On the whole, I find the 2001 DVD the most pleasing. The colours are a bit muted on the 2006 DVD for my liking, especially during the Pink Elephants sequence. The 2006, as others have noted, has had too much noise and grain reduction applied, rendering everything a bit plasticky looking.

I've seen other comparisons online and it appears the same transfer was used, which I think is the same one that has been used since its first video release. It is the one title never issued on Laserdisc in this country, so I may have to track down an old VHS if I were to compare it to the first video transfer. I don't know if I'll bother for it.

I think the 2001 DUMBO - like the 2000 ROBIN HOOD - were guinea pigs for a method of restoration that has since been abandoned at Disney. They were overbright and oversaturated to the point of looking garish, and whites in particular looked quite bad.

Oh, ok. Never seen them in that shape before, mostly they're just white circles. Must've adjusted them for this movie.

It seems like all of Disney's DVD digital restorations since late 2001 are lower in brightness, almost as if accounting for default factory settings on many tv's (which most people leave as is) - and those default settings are almost always quite wrong in regards to color, brightness, contrast and "sharpness".

Even though it also has some issues replicating white (though not as bad as the 2001 DVD), I prefer the 2006 transfer. Neither really looks like a film-derived movie though, but the 2006 seems to be more correct in its color choices when the original 1982 Laserdisc (a bit faded and VERY worn) is referenced.

Look at the contrast boosting that makes the pink elephants scene "pop" like it does in the 2001 DVD. Though it DOES look striking, the boosting alters the colors a bit. It still works and, while it might not be as faithful to the original, I can see it as a valid alternative. Odd that the shadow in the background was obscured in the 1982 and 1991 releases, appearing for the first time on the 1995 Laserdisc. It was the most pronounced on the 2001 DVD (a transfer that is overly bright with excessive edge enhancement).

Look how weird the clown looks in the 2001 DVD, though in the 2006 he still looks weird. The 1995 Laserdisc below these images is probably the most accurate, and for its day was probably the best transfer of DUMBO available. It appears it really underwent a full film restoration for that edition, and the 2001 and 2006 releases used digital technology to take things a step further (or back, in some cases).

Isn't it funny how the 1991 Laserdisc appears to also use a theatrical print, is cropped to sometimes hide damage (check out the shot with Dumbo smiling at the crowd and how it is zoomed in to hide the cue mark to the right), and is WAY oversaturated?! And at the time they billed it as "newly restored and remastered"(!). The 1982 Laserdisc was from such a beat-up print... I always thought the 1991 and 1995 Laserdiscs were the same - until I started really comparing them. I'll bet ALICE IN WONDERLAND has had at least as many transfers for video as DUMBO, and I wonder hat those captures will show...

Quite interesting. I've got the 1995 LD and the 2001 DVD, and, although the newer versions are in some ways getting better and better, it seems to me based on this comparison that the 1995 LD was the biggest improvement over its predecessor.

I have just the VHS copy and the VCD copy of "Dumbo". The VCD version that I have was 61 minutes long, but it fits on one CD-R and it was time-compressing. The 1991 VHS copy had 63 minutes without time-compressing. A few days ago, Toon Disney aired the same film from a 1991 VHS print, but it does have the BV logo on it, same as with the VCD copy.

Drsd2kill, the first logo on a 1982 laserdisc/VHS release had the 1978 Walt Disney Home Entertainment "Neon Mickey" logo. That first one on that pic was scary and it may give people nightmares. I've seen those on YouTube and one of the early Disney VHS tapes as well as the early MCA Discovision laserdisc releases. This is what it looked like since Disney put out their films on one of the early Discovision laserdiscs.

The 1982 original VHS tape of "Dumbo" had the Disney VHS promo under the name "Walt Disney and You" contains many of these scenes from the Disney films which was already available on VHS. This was also after the end of "Dumbo".

I've seen the cue marks on the top right of the screen (which was on that "Dumbo" end title card) which was used in theatrical prints was also from my 1991 VHS copy of "Dumbo" and so was on VCD and it was shown on Toon Disney a few days ago had those cue marks. "The Three Caballeros" had cue marks also in both middle and at the end of the film. I also have the 1995 VHS "Masterpiece" copy of "The Three Caballeros" where they had those cue marks on that actual print. The 1999 "Gold Classic" edition had no cue marks also.

I like the 2006 transfer soley based on the scene with the clown shooting the water. Look at the splash of water. The details in the 2006 version are so much better. The colors, especially the reds seem to be oversaturated on the 2001 version too.

I'm making these comparisons for many reasons. First and foremost, I'm curious as to the quality differences, and until I started doing these comparisons I thought many releases utilized the same masters - and I was wrong. Second, I find it interesting to see several "restored" releases that look so different, the question remaining "Which is the most faithful to the original film?"

These comparisons help me judge which I think is the best, and "the best" doesn't necessarily mean the cleanest, grain-free, over edge-enhanced, newest video release.

I'm working on obtaining a few Laserdiscs to make comparisons for ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE THREE CABALLEROS, THE SWORD IN THE STONE, etc.

So in the end the 2006 version is the best sad to say. Even though they did crop it a little, that version seems to hold up the natural real looking print IMO.

The part where Dumbo is perched at the top of the house on fire, there should to be a red tint due to the flames (as shown in the 1991 Laserdisc). But in the 2006 DVD, the flames don't give anything a red glow!
