Edited Disney Afternoon DVDs?

Post by UncleEd »

What's this I hear that some of the episodes on the Disney Afternoon DVDs are edited versions?

It's about the pilot episodes that set up the show. In some cases, there are scenes missing that ran when the program first aired in movie form. See, they would air those four or five episode specials that introduce the characters first all at once, like a special movie, then the series would take it from there and when they reran the premieres they would be broken up into 4 or 5 episodes. Well, in some cases, there was more to the broken up episodes, like with DuckTales. When they showed the episodes all as one movie one afternoon to introduce the show, it actually didn't have a few moments that were shown in the episodic version of the pilot. So, in the case of DuckTales, since the DVD sets are giving us the episodic versions, I don't think we lost anything. However, with some shows they had more to them before they were broken up into episodes. For example, Talespin had a very memorable lullaby number between Rebecca and Molly (if I remember correctly) that we don't get on the DVD because it wasn't in the episodic version. I think I have also read that there was something removed from the Darkwing Duck pilot as well. I don't know about Rescue Rangers.

That stinks. I didn't catch anything missing on Ducktales because the movie version was shorter than the episodic one. There was one episode nearly completely cut out but I forget which one it was. I haven't got the Tale Spin set yet but I think I remember what you speak of. I wish they would handle these releases by having people who know the material run them rather than kids who know nothing about the properties...

Sorry, I meant to say Darkwing Duck in that next to last sentence, not DuckTales. I've corrected it. As I had said, nothing wrong with the DuckTales pilot to my knowledge, but I heard the Darkwing Duck pilot episodes are missing something.

It's not just the pilots here. For example in Rescue Rangers, all the episodes on the R1 DVDs (we're still assessing the mainland Europe R2 releases but we suspect they are cut free, unlike the R2 UK releases which are the US versions) are the edited versions later broadcast on the Disney Channel. There are subtle dialogue and visual changes in many episodes and one scene in "The Pied Piper Powerplay" involving a deaf/mute mouse called Mouseo will no doubt be missing on the DVD.

Really? In which case, could the mainland Europe releases of Ducktales also be free of DVNR?

Possibly. From what I've been told by RR fans on mainland Europe, their dubbed versions have been consistantly shown on TV over the last 15 years unedited. It wouldn't make sense to NOW cut them for the DVD release, and have to re-edit the soundtracks to go with them. The bonus part about the foreign language releases is that they have the English soundtrack present still!

So by the same token of rationale, it could apply to the Duck Tales DVD as well. Or any of the Disney Afternoon shows when they make it over here. Once the lack of any cuts is confirmed 100% I will be getting myself a copy of the R2s from somewhere out there, probably Scandinavia (because their dubbing sounds just bizarre! And yes, a different language track for each country).
