I also have to breathe a sigh of relief at that news. Having not been to Disney World since 1997, I can't judge in real life, but the photos of the arm made Spaceship Earth look stupid.

All I can say is: FINALLY!

It was a very fun and cool way to celebrate the new millennium, but has since outstayed it's welcome and somewhat represents Epcot's character-growth in the park and it's loss of sophistication.

Here's hoping the hat at MGM is next.

I'm happy they're removing the wand because it ruins the symmetry of the sphere, but I really hope they keep the hat at MGM...

I looked yesterday (?) for a picture of MGM without the hat, but I had no luck- does anyone have a picture (or a link to a picture) they could show me of what MGM looked like without the hat?

there are a lot of people who are happy it's coming down (me included!), but, i'm surprised at the number of people who wanted it to stay up.

as far as the hat...i'm 50/50...i was at mgm before it was up, but, i don't remember it without the hat being there.

here's a picture of mgm before the hat...

Spaceship Earth & Disney Studios

Post by Prince Charming 12 »

I thought the decoration definitely added a little pizzazz to the entrance for the Millennium Celebration. Maybe Disney has something else in mind. :P

I do like the sorcerer's hat at Disney-MGM studios. That feature added a distinguishing Disney icon to the center of the park. Yes, I have heard the argument that it does not match well with the theme of Hollywood & Sunset Blvds. However, those areas might be changing at some point in time anyway if the park's name is revised. Prior to the instillation of the hat, the gateway to Animation Courtyard was the unofficial symbol of the park, but that was just not situated properly for it to work as an icon.

For some reason, I always assumed that the water-tower was the symbol for Disney-MGM before the hat came in.

That's because it was (though, to be honest, Paris' Disney Studios one is place in a much more efficient position).

Yes, the "ears" atop of the water tower was the previous official icon of the park. I used the term unofficial with the gateway, because it was the photo opportunity that most guests used in it's place. It displayed the Disney-MGM logo/name in a more accessible location.

The water tower is best seen on the backlot tour, but you only get to snap a picture of it as you roll by.

It's so exciting. I've been going every day taking pictures. At the moment, all of the writing is down except for the "E" that faces the entrance of the park. I've been taking pictures of the progress and if I have time, I will post.

Well, I never got to see the wand "live", but I guess by the time I get there next year it will be a distant memory. Best to see it as it was almost originally intended I guess...

I liked the wand in temporary form. Definitely an impressive structure, regardless of its thematic clashing. Still, it overstayed its welcome and I'll be very happy to see the Epcot geosphere returned to its former, wandless glory. I'm pleasantly surprised by how quickly they're taking it down.

I'm very happy about this, but it's nothing compared to how happy I'd be if Disney Studios removed the hat. I think the water tower was a better symbol, but I'd be fine with the hat if it was in a better location. I don't know if there's room for it, but maybe somewhere in front of the park, like where you first enter, or even outside, ha. Anywhere other than blocking the view of the Chinese theater. Yes, it ruins the old Holywood theming of the entrance of the park, and I'll totally hate it if they change that old Hollywood theming!

As for EPCOT, that's one step in the right direction, but I'm concerned they will put up something else. I feel they've ruined MOST of FutureWorld already. As I always say, that place was in its prime in the late '80's and early '90's. Same with Disney Studios though. (They did finally drop the MGM, didn't they?)
