Report: Top 10 Emmy finalists for drama & comedy series
Low-rated critics' favorite "Friday Night Lights" made the top 10 list of Emmy finalists for best drama series, but "Brothers and Sisters" — packed with Emmy-friendly stars — did not, according to judges reporting to TheEnvelope.com.

Other surprises: "Rome" — a canceled show that aired its last episode in March — is included on the drama list, but not two current series that were considered shoo-ins by some Emmywatchers: "Rescue Me" and "The Tudors." "The Office" and "Weeds" made the cut-off for best comedy, but there's one surprise addition — "Extras," which has relatively low Nielsen ratings.

The HBO show got in over "New Adventures of Old Christine," which was expected to be on the list. NBC leads all networks with 6 shows in the two Top 10s. ABC has 5, HBO 4, Showtime 2, Fox 2, CBS 1. FX network was shut out.

The top 10 shows reaping the most votes for best drama and comedy series from a polling of members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are being screened by judges this weekend at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and the academy's North Hollywood headquarters.

ATAS has not announced which series are being screened, but judges dispatched Blackberry and text-message reports to TheEnvelope.com from the panel viewings. Screenings will continue this week in Los Angeles plus a location in New York City.

Judges must view all 10 contenders in one category and rank them against each other. To determine the final 5 nominees, accountants then use the same voting method used on "Dancing with the Stars" — combining judges' scores equally on a 50/50 basis with results of the original popular vote. The voting procedure is new.

Last year judges' scores alone determined the final five per category. The current method is also being used to determine the final five nominees in the acting races. However, those judges — all fellow actors deciding a peer-group award — may view DVD screeners at home, then send in a final ballot with a signed affidavit attesting that they watched all sample episodes (one per contender). Final nominations will be announced on July 19. Various independent reports sent to us unsolicited agree that these are the finalists in the top series races, but the information is unofficial and unverified.

Hmm, overall, happy with the shortlists, but I'm sad that neither Gilmore Girls or Brothers and Sisters made the drama cut. Must be because they walk such a fine line between comedy and drama. Weird that Extras is in the race though, I hope they don't actually get nominated, I hate Ricky Gervais.

Wow. Some of those I just had to laugh at. Miley Cyrus for Lead Actress? Kyle Massey for Lead Actor? The twins from Desperate Housewives for Supporting Actor? Sorry, can't take those seriously. Thank god there are more capable nominees to choose from. Onto another topic, it really pains me to see those people that sent n their tapes and unless hell freezes over, won't get chosen. Cases in point are The L Word and Nip/Tuck. Oh well, we can always hope that they are at least nominated in the Guest star categories, cause we all know they won't be in the other categories.

Yeah that really sucks. I hate how the cable shows like these, that are really really good, yet a bit controversial and provocative get turned down for the main awards purely on that fact. Boring things like Everybody Loves Raymond and Law and Order win instead. I'm not saying that they're not good, but I just hate that they get ignored so much, when they're so good and have so much effort put into them.
Oh yeah, and I agree Lord of Sith- with Bang having been sent in, Felicity will definitely get a nom. Hopefully she can top Mariska Hargitay off the winners list this year.

Felicity is campaigning for Best Actress Comedy while Mariska is being submitted for Best Actress Drama. They won't be competing together.

It's getting ridiculous to see the Emmy robbing Lost more and more as the show starts showing Sci-Fi colors. The finale had some of the best acted drama I've ever seen for a show, but apparently that's not enough for the Emmy's high standards.

I'm thrilled to see that Felicity Huffman is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, though I believe Marcia Cross deserves to be on that list just as much, if not more. I'm also glad to see Laurie Metcalfe receive a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. I bet it feels good to be nominated again after all of these years (she won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy series for <i>Roseanne</i> in 1992, 1993, and 1994).

I'm sad to see that <i>Lost</i> was given the cold shoulder <b>again</b>, but it's understandable. I guess there's always next year...

Oh, and of course <i>The Office</i> deserved all of its nominations, as did <i>30 Rock</i> and <i>Heroes</i>!

I'm actually happy for these nominations. Really happy to see all the people who deserve it get nominated, especially Rachel Griffiths and Sally Field from Brothers and Sisters. Hope they both win. Also happy to see Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, New Adventures of Old Christine, and Grey's Anatomy got some great nods. Can't wait to see the winners.

Good noms, alhtough they always try to fit at least one Housewife in there, which kinda bugs me. DH is usually nominated for Drama, and so are the actresses, but suddenly, maye because there wasn't a spot left for Huffman on the Drama actress list, they put her on the Comedy actress list.
It's not that I don't like her, but if she didn't deserve a nomination for drama series, then they shouldn't give her one for comedy when DH isn't "real" comedy series.

I'm still opposed to "Desperate Housewives" being classified as a comedy, but it's at least nice to see it recognized. Felicity Huffman might be the best dramatic actress in the series, but if we're going for comedy, then it should probably go to Marcia Cross or Teri Hatcher.

Anyways, some of my favorite shows were overlooked while several that I've never seen were nominated, but that's to be expected. My picks (as in what I want to win, not what I predict will win) are as follows:
