Happy 10th Birthday Hercules!
Today marks the first day I saw the completed Hercules at the Disney Store sneak preview. It was the last animated feature I got really excited about and one of my favorites. I missed some gags I saw in a test audience a few months earlier though. I've always felt that this is a film that gets kicked around along with Hunchback. I'd love to see a two disc DVd for it but I guess that's never happening. Anyone else want to share your thoughts on Hercules in this thread?

Hercules was one of those movies that I missed out on due to being in my pre-teen "I'm too cool for Disney" phase, so I didn't see it in theatres, nor did we acquire the VHS (incidentally, I also missed out on Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Tarzan, but not Mulan as we saw that in theatres). I remember when I finally did see it, it must've been a couple years after its VHS release at a cousin's house. I wasn't particularly impressed by it (probably because I'd been Disney-ed out), and only bought the DVD to fill up my DAC collection.
The only times I watched the DVD, and I remember this specifically, was a day off last summer, with Emily and Tristan. Emily was a nut about Hercules, and she had that day's pick for what movie we'd watch (our last day off together I got to pick, and we watched Somewhere in Time, which Em and I loved, but Tristan was bored throughout). We actually didn't even finish the movie, as we decided to go out for dinner (I'm pretty sure with Jason and Renee), then the next day off, Emily said we had to finish it, so we did. It's an okay movie, but not a very memorable one (for me). One of the few things I'll always love about it is "I Won't Say I'm In Love".
Anyways, happy 10th to Herc!

I saw a sneak preview for the Disney store of Hercules, too, and I found it very enjoyable, because it was a comedy, it had a great score, and I really like mythology (even if the story was more "Heracles" run through the movie "Superman" than actual myth, I enjoyed it). Plus, Susan Egan made a great Meg. I keep holding off on buying this DVD in hopes of a two-disc version, but that seems less likely as time goes on.

Goodness... 10 years. How time goes by. It feels like it was yesterday when I was totally in love with everything related to that movie. During my summer vacation I got the leaflet with the very first picture of Hercules and the whole gang on it....Coming Soon it said. I fell in love with everything on that leaflet. It was only a few months until it would be released in theaters but to me it seemed like eons. I can't wait for these months to go by, I wanna watch it now!- I was screaming. And now I realise that not only those months went by, not only was I totally impressed with it when I saw it, not only did I buy the VHS a couple of months later and saw it so many times that I actually got sick of it, but I'm 10 years older. Life is the biggest lie ever. You think you'll never grow old, you think you will always be a child making plans for the future, but suddenly the future is here, now. It's even almost gone. You think Disney will always keep making such great films such as Hercules, but then, in 2007, you realize that it's all a big, FAT LIE.
Anyway....
Happy Birthday Hercules. Although you'll never again be as wonderful as you were back in 1997. I still love you.

Yeah I was going through that "too cool for Disney" period as well so I missed out on a few films, most notably Hercules and Mulan. Then I went to see Tarzan in the theater and a week later bought Herc, Mulan and A Bug's Life on video. It was the summer of 1999. Wow.
I can't believe it's been a decade since Hercules made its splash. A DECADE! I feel old... I tell my cousins that I watched all the classics in the theater when they were released (TLM, BATB, AL, TLK, POCA) and they are shocked, as if 15 years is such a long time lol Anyway, happy anniversary Hercules!

Hahaha I went through that when Atlantis: The Lost Empier came out lol I was like 12 years old. Before that I saw every Disney Movie from BATB up til The Emperors New Groove.Escapay wrote:Hercules was one of those movies that I missed out on due to being in my pre-teen "I'm too cool for Disney" phase
Anyways wow! I can't believe its been ten years!! I remember exactly going to see it in the crummy old theater by my old house, I remember walking out thinking I was Hercules hahaha. But yeah this is a memorable one for me, and it's one of my favorites. Happy Birthday Herc! A tenth Anniversary Edition should have been on the way!!
I find it even harder to believe I saw BATB and Aladdin some 15-16 years ago....yikes, times a flying!

I didn't see Hercules until it was on video because I was in High School at the time thought Disney was for kids. But I did go see Tarzan in the theater along with Star Wars Episode 1 :The Phantom Menace. The last Disney film I saw in theaters was Pocahontas because I thought The Hunchback of Norte Dame, Hercules, A Bug's Life and Toy Story were weak. At the same time I was tutoring elementary students and boy were they talking about Hercules and Mulan a lot. When my parents got Mulan on VHS it was a great flick and thought I give Hercules a try and boy it was great too.
Happy 10th to Hercules...
P.S. Disney give Hercules a 2 Disc treatment already.

Ya, I went through that phase as well. It started around when Mulan came out, but my friend dragged me out to see it on July 4th. When I saw it, I remember liking it deep down, but having that overbearing feeling that "Disney is for kids", so Mulan was the last DAC I saw in theaters. (Excluding Pixar films!!!!) But our family did stop buying the VHS's after Pocahontas (which I was in love with). I finally got over that phase around 2005 when our high school band took a trip to Disney World. Honestly if it wasn't for that trip, I would likely still be caught in that phase.jeremy88 wrote:Hahaha I went through that when Atlantis: The Lost Empier came out lol I was like 12 years old. ANYWAYS, Hercules is an interesting film and very stylized. In that respect, the style even reminds me of Sleeping Beauty but way more focused on comedy. Not necessarily a memorable film for me, however it does have it's good lines, gags, and overall good points. (Pain:"You mean IF he catches us. Panic: If...If is good...) various songs, etc. One thing that really irked me about Herc. is that it is no where close to the actual myth!! I mean, Hercules kills his family and Hera is not his mother! Sorry, but mythology is facinating to me and Greek is no different.
But despite what I previously said... Congrats to Hercules for making that 10 year mile-marker and I hope for all of you Hercules fans that we get a 10th Anniv. 2-Disk SE in the near future!

I never went through a Disney hating phase either. But Hercules was the last Disney film I really enjoyed. They all fell short for me after that. My view on Tarzan was tainted because I go a new tape they called Storyteller tapes where Disney would do the films like radio shows. I got Tarzan first and was like "Wow, this is the greatest story since Beauty and the Beast!" Then I saw it and was so disappointed. I'm not sure why it fell short but it just did and Rosie O'donnel was completely annoying to me. I was also greatly disappointed by Atlantis. It had so much potential but was held back by the execs and Treasure Planet was insanely micromanaged. I didn't even like the first Toy Story when it came out. It wasn't a bad film, just not as great as people were saying. I totally expected to hate A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2 but I loved those.
But anyway, I liked Hercules and have seen enough cut scenes here and there that they all need to be on DVD. I remember the first time I saw the trailer on the Toy Story VHS and was completely interested. I had heard about the film on a trip to Disney that summer but wasas interested until after I saw the trailer. I don't think Disney ever put out a marketing campaign like they did for that film. There were blurbs about it 10 months before release and even the 2 toy Happy Meal. I'm sure it was a tremendous flop for them but not a bad flick.
I also have every Hercules PVC ever released world wide from the time the film was released that I know about. I'm a huge Hercules fan. I even built all the characters out of plywood for my Christmas display when I used to have a Disney character Christmas display. All the monsters were like 16 feet tall. And interesting the European soundtrack had songs not on the US version. Weird, huh?

I bought it a year ago I guess and I watched it for the first time when I came back home. I was really surprised! The story, at first, didn't seem appealing to me since I'm not really interested in mythology and "heros". I've waited such a long time before buying it!! Now I regret it!
This a Disney movie I would watch over and over!
I've never seen Hercules: Zero to Hero but I just bought it on VHS so I'll watch it soon!
Anyway, I hope Hercules will be release soon in a 2-disc edition!
Happy 10th Anniversary Hercules!
