Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection for 24th July 2007 priced at $39.98 SRP.

Three-discs hold some 8hrs of content (exact details TBA) presented in Full Frame with English DD2.0 Mono audio and optional English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.

While the extras have yet to be announced they are supposed to be excellent according to Mr. Beck.

I remember when I was younger I used to rent some of the Woody Woodpecker tapes from my local video store. I am not sure if I still like the cartoons enough to buy the set. I'll just pass on this release.

In addition to the first 45 Woody Woodpecker cartoons–presented in original release order–from Knock Knock (1940) to The Great Who-Dood-It (1952), the first five Chilly Willy cartoons (which includes two Tex Avery classics), and five choice Andy Panda cartoons, there will be several Swing Symphonies (including Culhane’s Abu Ben Boogie and The Greatest Man In Siam, among others), Oswald Rabbit (Confidence, Hell’s Heels, Oscar nominee Merry Old Soul and others) and wartime cartoons (like Pigeon Patrol and Pass The Biscuits Mirandy).

That’s not all. Miscellanous Walter Lantz Cartunes (like Hysterical High Spots in American History, Pooch the Pup in King Klunk, Peterkin in Scrambled Eggs, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B and the Avery masterpieces, Crazy Mixed Up Pup and SHH-H-H-H-H) plus bonus material including six Behind-the-Scenes with Walter Lantz segments from the 1957 Woody Woodpecker Show and the rarely seen Halloween TV special Spook-a-Nanny.

While my favorite Woody cartoon won't appear on this set (1956's Niagara Fools), I'll be picking this up for sure. Woody was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

I like the fact that Uni's going to release some of the non-Disney Oswald's with this set as well. Definitely will whet my appetite for the Dinsey Oswald set in December.

I remember Woody Woodpecker a lot. I used to watched it since I was a kid when it was on WNEW-TV (Channel 5) in New York City. It has been part of channel 5's staple in the New York City airwaves. I hope this DVD will take a trip back to where WNEW-TV in New York City was the Woody Woodpecker station.

Picked this up yesterday. It was nice of Universal to include Oswald cartoons.

What a great collection!! I picked this up on Tuesday and have watched the first two discs already. What a bonus to have the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit 'tunes included in this set. I had forgotten how zany Woody was in his cartoons. My grandkids were watching most of these with me, and they laughed more than I expected at Woody's antics.

Great collection, and I do hope that a Volume 2 is not too far away.

Supposedly nearly every short on the DVD is a DVNR fest.

I was going to get this, but now that I know its a DVNR bonanza I'm not so sure. A whopping 39 of the cartoons are said to be affected.

Here are a couple of shots showing the damage. Shame, when will they learn not to use DVNR on animation!

I'll definitely be picking this set up, it's been a long time since I've been able to visit this part of my childhood, plus I love getting my hands on any piece of animation history like this.

I hope to get this one too, though it's a shame about the quality. However, I have a hard enough time keeping up with the Disney releases I want (heck, I'm rather behind still, mostly due to direct to video releases), so it will probably be a while before I get this. First, I want that new Popeye set. Plus, I still need 3 of the Disney Legacy DVDs (only have volume 3) and that huge Superman set, among other stuff. I don't have very many non-Disney cartoon collections. A friend of mine gave me the big Pink Panther cartoon set as a birthday gift though, and I have a few season one sets of animated shows like Batman, Superman, Family Guys and Aquateens.
