Cancelled TV Shows - which one made you the saddest?

Post by Anthony »

So which TV show were you absolutely devastated and heartbroken about when first hearing it was cancelled?

For me it was Freaks and Geeks. A short-lived dramedy about group of unpopular misfits dealing with high school in the 80's. It was swiftly cancelled by NBC in 2000 halfway through the season. NBC didnt know how to deal with a show of this calibre. It had critical acclaim, but the constant non-promotion of the show, pre-emptions and schedule changes hurt the ratings. It never really had the chance to find an audience. It remains, for me, one of the greatest shows ever. It had huge potential. Thankfully, the complete series was released on DVD with the original music intact.

It was the saddest cancellations ever for me. That and Sunset Beach (another NBC show - but that's a whole other story). :)

The first show that comes to my mind is Reba, but I'm sure there was some cancellation that made me more sad.

It's not official yet, but it looks like Studio 60 is going to be cancelled, and it's a shame because its a great show.

Others include: Jenny (Jenny McCarthy's sitcom, shut up... it was funny), Lush Life (with Karyn Parsons, Hilary of Fresh Prince), Snoops (Gina Gershon show on ABC like 8 years ago)

I LOVED SNOOPS!

That was such a good David E. Kelley show that no one gave a darn about ...

Probably The Mole. Yes, It was a reality show but a darn good one at that. Ehh... I really didn't mind when the celeb version got axed, but knowing the regular edition wasn't coming back was sad.

SNOOPS was the best and I hope a complete series box set will come out now that the David E. Kelley series are coming out on dvd ...

The opening credits were so good!

The Mole ... and Murder in a Small Town were two interesting reality shows that never caught on ...

I personally enjoyed the celebrity installments ... (I own Celebrity Mole Hawaii on DVD :-D)

I LOVED Murder in Small Town X, except it really creeped me out being that I lived in small town at the time it aired.

I would agree with that as well. I'm not a huge reality television fan, but "The Mole" was one of the best. Even the last couple of seasons of "Celebrity Mole" were pretty entertaining as well.

Oh and of course ... FUTURAMA ...

I was hoping that with Family Guy being revived from the dead ... they could have done that with FUTURAMA too ...

I am sure the re-runs have got to be a success on [adult swim] ...

I cried when Sunset Beach ended too. Partly because I had to get a haircut instead of sit and watch it, so I only caught the last 10 minutes (but have since seen the rest online).

Other cancellations that got me sad (or flipping mad at the network) include:

Another World
Central Park West
Commander in Chief
Coupling
El Clon (a telenovela, so it was intended to only run a certain amount of time, but I still miss it)
Everwood
Firefly
Futurama
Grosse Pointe
Horatio Hornblower (A&E TV Movie series)
Jack & Bobby
Jake 2.0
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Miracles
Night Stalker
Once & Again
Port Charles
Titans

I've had a lot. For a while, it seemed like every new show I started watching got canceled, so I stoped watching new shows until a season DVD set for a while just so it wouldn't get canceled (You're welcome, Office fans! lol).

The show that made me the most angry about its cancellation was Arrested Development. Such a great show. It sucks that there won't be any more and the last season had to kind of rush to finish up the story, but at least they had the benefit of knowing they were going to be canceled.

The first two shows that were canceled that I was an avid viewer of were So Weird on Disney Channel and Maybe It's Me on The WB. So Weird got kind of lame it's last season and the whole mystery behind Annie's past wasn't really resolved. And they ended the entire series with a flashback episode! I was so mad! As for Maybe It's Me, that show was so hilareous. Fred Willard and Julia Sweeney were the parents and everyone in the family was weird except for Molly. It was hysterical and had great continuity. The executives at The WB decided to give it a second season, so the show ended with the family loosing their house to the mob after the oldest son bet it and lost in a poker match. It ended with the line "to be continued..." Summer reruns had such little viewership that WB decided to cancell it. GRRRR!!!! I wish they would bring both of these shows to DVD.

The show that I was most adamant about campaigning for was Wonderfalls on Fox. It was that show about the Niagra Falls disgruntled gift shop employ and inanimate objects would speak to her and tell her to do things that seemed wrong, but ended up helping people in the end. It was so funny as well as charming and it made you feel good. A Friday night timeslot killed the show after only 4 episodes. Luckily for me, the show was released on DVD and can be seen on LOGO, but there will be no more episodes and it's a shame because they had set up the characters nicely for many more story archs.
I'm currently watching and reviewing every Disney film in chronological order. You can follow along at my blog, The Disney Films, and also follow me on Twitter.

I too was sad when Lois & Clark only made it to 4 seasons ...

and Night Stalker was also another tragedy from last season ... I was sure that one was going to stay and become a sorta X-Files type of show ... It was really good ...

Sleeper Cell is another example of a fine show that is ending after only 2 seasons ...

and DayBreak was a good show this season that really didn't get a lot of love from the network ...

I kind of agree with you, but then I think the writers wouldn't have gotten their target audience.
Firefly's cancellation has got me bummed, too.
Others are:
X-Men: Evolution (where is that forth season DVD??)
Friends (I know it didn't get cancelled, but it was sad to see the end)
Family Guy (but then it came back, so it's cool)
8 Simple Rules For Datin My Teenage Daughter (I looved this show)

For those Futurama fans, did you know that the show is coming back? I think what I heard was they have started animating new episodes for airing in 2009 on Comedy Central.
:pan: Love It.

Though I never watched the show when it was originally on, Grounded For Life is a really funny show that I have been watching on ABC Family. I would have liked to have seen that last a little longer, I have seen every episode like 4 times now.

Ok ... well im kinda confused then ...

Cuz I've read online that they were animating new direct-to-dvd "movies" that continue the story ... I think I read that there were to be 4 FUTURAMA movies ... and that Comedy Central was going to air them ...

Maybe they changed their mind and instead of direct-to-dvd movies ... the series will return for a full new season? I hope! Woohoo!

These are the only ones I can remember being sad or mad about being cancelled:
Reba
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Popular ( I was furious over the way this one ended on a cliff-hanger)

Edit:
I can't believe I forgot about Joan of Arcadia and Dead Like Me.

Futurama- I was so mad when Fox moved Futurama to Sunday to Tuesday back to Sunday airing it at 7 p.m. then just canceling the show after the five seasons. At least Comedy Central picks it up.

Family Guy- One of the best show on Fox besides The Simpsons. At least Fox gave it another chance.

M. A. N. T. I. S.- This was a superhero type of show that was put on Fridays and didn't do well in the ratings. I remember watching some episodes which were great kind of reminded me of Batman and Daredevil.

The New Adventures of Brisco County, Jr- This show was also on Friday which started at 8 p.m. then X-Files came on at 9 p.m. Fox only kept X-Files since it had better ratings and was a cult hit.

Dark Angel- Jessica Alba before she became the Invisible woman. This show was good but Fox moved it to Friday causing the show to have fewer viewers.

Roar- Another Friday show that didn't last long and should have.

Firefly- Yet another Friday show that was doomed.

The Flash- Great comic to television show that should have had another chance.

Battlestar Galactica (1979-1980)- This was a great show during the 80's too bad it cost too much to produce.

Gargoyles- This was one of my favorite show it should have lasted longer just like DuckTales and Darkwing Duck.

Spider-Man: TAS, The Tick, X-Men: TAS, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Sliver Surfer and X-Men Evolution- All were great shows but most were cancel because of budget or the network fear that Marvel had too many shows on the network.

Justice League, Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans and Superman:TAS- All these DC Comics animated shows great but were cancel mainly to budget problems or decreasing ratings.

Road Rovers, Earthworm Jim and Freakazoid!- Only lasted two or less seasons because of low rates.

Team Knight Rider- Yeah I'm a fan of Knight Rider, okay.
The Simpsons Season 11 Buy it Now!

Fox Sunday lineup:

8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 King of the Hill
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 American Dad
