The bonus features I like best

Post by Chernobog »

Well, let's talk about our favorite bonus features from Disney DVD's.
Of all the Disney DVD's I've seen I'd probably pick "Disney Through the Decades", from the Snow White SE, Glen Keane's early animation of Tarzan and the Deep Canvas demonstration from the Tarzan CE, the deletes sequence "If I Never Knew You", from the spanish edition of Pocahontas, Glen Keane: A Transformation, from Beauty and the Beast, the virtual tour from the Monsters Inc...

What about you?

my only favorite bonus features on the DVDs are the deleted scenes whether they are in storyboard or in complete animation.

In terms of ones that I could watch over and over (or for pure fun):

I love the Inter-Stitchals on the 'Lilo and Stitch' DVD. Silly, but fun.

I used to like the animated shorts the most, but most of these are available on the Treasures now.

Country Bears also had a few fun inclusions, like the "mockumentary stuff".

But top-notch quality extras I love are on:

Atlantis - playing all that stuff with the play all is the most comprehensive "doco" you are going to get on a Disney making of. Actually, Atlantis is a first class package all-round.

The commentary on 'Beauty and the Beast' was fun, relaxed and informative.

There are more...will post as they come to me...

We had that on our discs here in Sweden too.
Was it not on the R1 disc?

My favourite bonus features are complete episodes of the Disneyland / Walt Disney Presents TV shows. They bring back lots of fond memories from my childhood.

For example, the "All about magic" episode on "The Sword in the Stone" DVD or "A Goofy Success Story" on the "A Goofy Movie" DVD.

I usually get very disappointed when they have included only parts of a Disneyland show, like on "Swiss Family Robinson" and "The Parent Trap".

Other than that, complete animated shorts always make a nice addition to any DVD.

No. I think the R1 only got Hiawaitha's (sp?) Hunt short, a game and a read-along. All the PAL Pocahontas discs got additional LD content as supplements (and a much better transfer).

I like the Character Design on Pocahontas PAL. Some of it is funny stuff (but somewhat un-PC I guess), but ignoring that it is facinating to hear the difference in approach between Pochahontas and Ariel.

Favorite Supplements are (in no order):

Pocahontas: Character Design Lecture
Country Bears: Concert for America
Any Comic/Comic Strip in the Vault Disney galleries
Snow White: Archive Radio Show
Roger Rabbit: "Toon Town Confidential" subtitle info track
Sleeping Beauty: 4 Artists Paint 1 Tree
Sleeping Beauty: Virual Gallery (all virtual galleries, but this is the best)
Sleeping Beauty: Grand Canyon
Snow White: Main Documentary
Fantasia/Fantasia 2000: Main Documentary
George of the Jungle 2: Spoof Documentary (very funny, I thought)
Lion King: Virtual Safari

(I'm lying with one of these. Guess which one)
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

My favorites would be the making-of documentaries. I'm not talking about 5-minute piece of fluff featurette like Hercules or Mighty Joe Young. (Or Arachnophobia, which runs just 2 minutes.) Typically, in order to offer substance, you really need to have at least 25 minutes - "The Story Behind Toy Story", "Making Nemo", and the "Lilo & Stitch Documentary" all just barely fit the requirement. I'd rank the Toy Story one as best, but I feel all three could use some additional running time to really cover more that is only alluded to. Snow White had a great one, and Beauty and the Beast had a passable one. The ones on the Vault Disney discs are fantastic, too. For the most part, they range from a half-hour to an hour and they get great cast and crew participation, and are interesting and well-produced and edited. Universal's Collector's Edition DVDs used to be great at this too - but that seems like a distant memory now.

Believe it or not, another feature that is consistently interesting to me - trailers & TV ads. I think it's always fascinating to see how a movie is marketed in relation to what it is. At the top end of the spectrum, you have Pixar discs like the Ultimate Toy Box and Monsters, Inc. that have trailers and TV ads. Pixar is the best at picking cool trailer music that totally "works" with their content. Things like Marketing Galleries, on the Ultimate Toy Box, are also interesting to me.

Audio Commentaries are very cool...most of the time. I'll be the first to admit that I only listen to commentaries on my favorite films and films on which I think light can really be shed. That said, I still haven't listened to the entire commentaries on some that I'd really like to: The Lion King, Back to the Future Trilogy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off (only got halfway through), Finding Nemo, or The Godfather Trilogy. You really have to find the time and be in the mood for these...and if you're only getting a chance to watch a few movies a week; chances are you'll want something a little more exciting and engaging than hearing a few people talk. Pixar excels here, too. Their commentaries are lively and funny. Text-based commentaries can be fun too, though are tougher to follow when you're rather into the movie - I watched Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh like this last night. Reunion commentaries are awesome too. I haven't found the time to listen to the Vault Disney ones I own or have rented; but if they're like the documentaries on the sets, I'll be very pleased. You have missed opportunities here for most films - like it would have been nice to have cast commentary or documentary on the recently-reissued John Hughes films.

The rest - deleted scenes, interstitials, music videos stand out as being particularly easy to watch. I enjoy reading Cast Bios and credits list - but those are only found on the Vault Disney line and the Ultimate Toy Box, as far as I can tell. Interstitials like Toy Story Treats, Fishy Facts, or even the Lilo & Stitch trailers (which kind of qualify, on name of the feature alone) are just inherently very watchable.

Way too much text - don't want to lose this message before I hit submit.

i also enjoy the documentary features.......FEATURES! again with the 5 minutes thing.....i don't like it. my favorite documentaries are on the vault disney style discs.....even the one disc ones, because i love seeing what all these famous disney actors look like today, and all of them-ALL OF THEM- tell amazing and sentimental stories about how Walt was such an inspiration for them.....very touching stuff.

i also am a big fan of the trailers and poster art. i'm glad that anchor bay has released poster art for some disney films (i.e. legend of lobo, nikki wild dog of north, one magic christmas, etc.) a lot of times these count as like a "best of" segment where they give you a bunch of your favorite scenes in the movie with a background song (kind of like that one disney moments tv at the disney store). love these things (like the disney through the decades segment on the snow white disc).

commentaries are a definite plus. a lot of times they are the redeeming factor (i.e. the lion king disc). it is here that you feel included in the jokes and behind the scenes process as the film is viewed. i try and watch every commentary on every disc (including the multiple commentaries on discs like inspector gadget 2).

this is going to sound sad, but another one of my favorites parts of disney dvds is the "coming soon" section with previews for the upcoming disney stuff. i love watching previews in the theater, and dvd is of no difference.......especially when it is a new trailer.....and a good one.

a really good animated menu, like atlantis, snow white, or tron, is also a plus in my book. it shows that the studio takes pride in the presentation of this film.

I'm a really big fan of galleries, I love layouts and backgrounds, concept art and all those tings, the best galleries in my opinion are on sleeping beauty...I also like the audio comentaries speccially on the three available platinums.

One of the making of documentaries I found most interesting were Fun and Fancy Free or snow white.

and well, the dvds of Nemo and Mosnters are filled with some hot goodies aswell.
I'ts enough for this restless warrior just to be with you...

Normally, I'm not too concerned with bonus features...but with the film itself. So I only watch some of them. If I really like the film, I'll view them all. Bonuses are nice, though.

My favorites are on the Lilo & Stitch disc. The behind-the-scenes documentary was a lot of fun...and a very good look at the people who made the film, their daily lives at work. But it was so short! And the Inter-stitc-als. Loved those.

I'm really glad they're releasing a 2-Disc Lilo. I will buy that one for the extras. :)

Oh, and for all the Disney films, I really enjoy the commentaries!
