Ok, when I upload an image for my avatar, it says it must be 100x100, but some avatars seem a compleatly different shape from that! Mostly, they seem wider. How come?

100 x 100 is the limit. It can be less than that in either way. If the avatar is hosted off-UD, then (as of now) there's no way to check the dimensions and make sure it meets the requirements. So people can get around the limits that way. That said, if it's something that's way larger than 100 pixels in either direction (that throws off navigation), I'll usually spot it and remove it or advise the member to change it/resize it.

Hope that answers your question!
