My first one was "My Neighbor Totoro." I've never been a big anime fan, but something about Miyazaki's work is very appealing to me. I then saw "Kiki's Delivery Service" and was eagerly anticipating "Castle in the Sky" which was advertised at the end of the VHS, but for whatever reason Disney didn't release it until years later on DVD. When "Princess Mononoke" came to DVD and I found out it was by Miyazaki, I rushed to Suncoast and bought it without ever seeing it. It instantly became my favorite. My brother was at a comic convention and he picked me up an 8-disc "all region" box set of all of the Studio Ghibli films up until Mononoke. So I hade seen all of those in Japanese with subtitles before Disney started releasing their English dubs. I really like the care Disney takes with translating the films into English, something I've heard many anime fans complain about with other production companies. I have all of the Disney releases, as well as Central Park Media's amazing version of "Grave of the Fireflies." I've seen both "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle" in theaters. The only Miyazaki film I didn't care for was "Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cogliostro." I rented it once and just couldn't sit through it. I can't wait until "Tales From Earthsea" gets released in the U.S. It's too bad that Sci-Fi Channel film is interfering with it's release due to issues over the franchise in the U.S.

Of course I like Ghibli-films ;)
For me, it started with Spirited Away in the English dubbed version. I liked it, but I hated how much Chihiro seemed to scream her lines. then I saw the Japanese verion and fell in love. Princess Mononoke was the second Ghibli I saw, needless to say my love grew. After that came Kiki's Delivery Service, which is still a favourite today.
I now own 11 Ghibli's on DVD (region 2 Optimum versions). To my knowledge, I'm only missing Only Yesterday, Nausiccäa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbours The Yamadas and Castle of Cogliostro.

My first Ghibli film was My Neighbor Totoro, then Princess Mononoke, and finally Spirited Away. I loved the first two, but I didn't know who made the films until I saw Spirited Away.

I of course loved all the Miyazaki films, and most all of the Studio Ghibli films (My Neighbors the Yamadas excluded). I am very dedicated, as I traveled 40 miles to see Howl's Moving Castle in theaters, and it was definately deserved.

Nearly all the Ghibli films are masterpieces, including Nausicaa and the Castle of Cagliostro (not Ghibli films, but Miyazaki).

I first became aware of Miyazaki back in my anime convention days, probably around 1990-1995. I recall seeing a few in the viewing rooms, although that may have been right around when Princess Mononoke came out.

Kiki's Delivery Service was my first title, and I got it on Laser Disc. My first DVD was Panda Go Panda (which I think most anyone will love...)

I saw Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle in the theater, along with my 72-year-old mother. She is as big of a Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli fan as I am, and we have been buying some of the Disney titles for my nieces each year for Christmas or birthdays.

We have seen every title Disney has released except for My Neighbors the Yamadas, and I owned most of them, although I have sent a couple to my nieces and haven't replaced them yet.

Consider me one who likes Lupin III in Castle of Cagliostro... That one is actually rated pretty high among anime fans.

I also have Future Boy Conan along with Gauche the Cellist, but that may be from someone else at Ghibli...

Though I have been waaay into Sailor Moon since it first aired in the U.S. when I was starting college (which is not to say I know everything about it, I haven't delved too deeply into the later seasons because I want ALL the DVDs before I do) and have dabbled in just a smidge of other Anime, I have never come to hold Anime higher than Disney, as many do. Not even Miyazaki, though I have thoroughly enjoyed what little of his work I have seen. Anyway, the first time I become aware of Miyazaki (though it may not have been my first Miyazaki experience), was when the Disney Channel first started playing "Kiki's Delivery Service," it was such a sweet, calming, relaxing little movie, and I really came to love it. I bought the VHS right after that, and now I have the DVD. I have to admit, even though I bought the DVD some time ago, I haven't had a chance to watch it though. I bought four Miyazaki DVDs at once (it was a deal at Best Buy), and have only gotten a chance to watch two so far: Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I have yet to even see Castle in the Sky, though it is the 4th one I bought that day. I believe I have seen some of his other work to, or, at least, other Ghibli films, and I'd like to get more of them. I recently saw Grave of the Fireflies and Pom Poko when AMC aired them, and both were fascinating! Also saw the second half of another, but I can never remember its name. I think it was "Only Yesterday." Still haven't seen "My Neighbor Totoro" yet.

As for other Anime, I have three VHS tapes of "Gunbuster," which I caught in an Anime Club meeting once in college, where I would sometimes spend my lunch hour. I also saw some other stuff there that I would be interested in getting into when I have more money and time: Ranma 1/2, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and All Purpose Catgirl Nuku Nuku. I have taped Robot Carnival and Vampire Hunter D off television, and a friend sent me Akira, which I have yet to get around to reviewing on Amazon.com (a hobby of mine that I have neglected lately), but it's a fascinating film. I also have a DVD (the first one I think) of something called Battle Athletes. I may be forgetting some other Anime I have, but nothing is springing to mind right now. Mainly, I'm a Sailor Moon guy, though I only have a few of the episodes on DVD and the three animated features, and I consider myself a big Kiki fan, ha.

Ah, yes, and I also am hoping to eventually get into Neon Genesis Evangelion, but, again, haven't had the money or time yet. I'll have to catch up with my Sailor Moon stuff first. I don't know TOO much about NGE, I just know that Asuka has been a dreamgirl of mine for a LONG time!

I Love Hayao Myazaki's films. I like how they are creative and they are films that have a lot of thought put into them. I also like how they are pretty lengthy and are told with great stories and animation.

The first Mayazaki movie I saw was My Neighbor Totoro When I was like 7 years old. And I loved it! Kiki's Deliverary service is also pretty good. I didnt have any idea about studio Ghibli but I liked their films. I havent seen all of Studio Ghibli's films or of Myazaki but I plan to buy them all and put them in their own little "Studio Ghibli" Collection. Howl's moving Castle was also very entertaining.

Between Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro I can't decide which one is my favorite haha I guess I like both for different reasons. Today I got Princess Mononoke in the mail so Im going to watch it tonight :)

So anyway Walt Disney and Studio Ghibli will always be my two favorite Animation Company's :) but I definitely can't say which I like better because they are amazing and I admire the both of them.

Miyazaki's movies are fantastic. Each one I have seen has been a masterpiece. I don't think I can get enough of Studio Ghibli.

I first saw "KiKi's Delivery Service" when I was quite little. I remember this because we have it on VHS, and we have yet to upgrade to DVD. Then, about 8-10 years later, I was exposed to "Spirited Away" and I fell in love with the movie, animation, and overall style of anime and Studio Ghibli. After that, I'm pretty sure that I borrowed "Princess Mononoke" from the library, and I was stunned. It was a wonderful movie complete with fantastic animation and story. Next, I viewed "Castle in the Sky" which I found to be a great movie and it has become one of my favorites. Then, I watched "My Neighbor Totoro" (old dub) and "Grave of the Fireflies". They are such a contrast that when my mom bought GotF, I didn't want it because it was so emotionally moving. Soon after, I borrowed "Panda, Go Panda" and I found that to be a charmingly clever little film. It was a plus that I liked pandas, too. After that, I bought Nausicaa, and I thought that it was superb. After that, I watched "Porco Rosso" and "Pom Poko" which I borrowed from the library. I perfer Porco over Pom. I don't know why though. Maybe I like pigs over racoons :D . After that, I bought "Howl's Moving Castle" and "My Neighbor Totoro" (new dub). I fell in love with "Howl's Moving Castle" and it is my favorite Ghibli film to date. I really didn't like the new dub for Totoro, and would have much rather perfered for Disney to have used the old dub, but I guess I'm content with what I have. I haven't been exposed to any other Studio Ghibli film, but I am hoping in the future that I will see more. And I cannot wait for "Tales of Earthsea" even though the author didn't like it. Hey, you can't please everyone.

Well, that's my Ghibli story.

I also used to watch Sailor Moon (back when I was in 8th grade) and I miss it, but besides that I never got into anime or any of Miyazaki's stuff until really recently. The first one that I watched of his was Howl's Moving Castle (which I liked even though it is nobody's favorite). Then I recently bought My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I only saw Totoro which is good, and then I saw Kiki's Delivery Service and half of Pom Poko on tv. I am starting to get more into anime, but really haven't seen much. I also want to see Earth Sea even though others don't like it.

edit: oh yeah I saw Whisper of the Heart too...but I did not really care for it too much.

I just saw on nausicaa.net that according to ghilbliworld that Earth Sea got 2 raspberry awards... that doesn't matter to me I still want to see it!

I only just realized how similar "Over the Hedge" is to "Pom Poko." Okay, not VERY similar, but in a way. Anyone else see that slight similarity? I wonder if there was some inspiration there, even if Over the Hedge is your typical, modern CGI comedy. I still found it to be one of the better ones.

Now that you mention it... It ís the same basic idea. Pom Poko is the better film, though ;)
I'm glad to see a lot of you liked My Neighbour Totoro. I've seen it twice now, but I just can't seem to get into it as much as with other Ghibli's (the same goes for The Cat Returns). Maybe it's the fact that little kids annoy me, so Mei isn't the right protagonist for me ;)
My top three at the moment:
3) Kiki's Delivery Service
2) Howl's Moving Castle
1) Spirited Away

With a fourth place for Whisper Of The Heart.

I hosted a showing of Totoro for an older friend who got sick (she was Japanese and got me into the movie) for a cultural fair when I was 13, neary 14 years ago and became a Studio Ghibli fanatic ever since--still have all my old fansubs of the old movies while also of cours ebuying all the legit movies

I actually in some ways prefer Takahata's filsm to Miyazaki's but both are great--if only Disney would finally release Only Yesterday. Ocean's Waves also deserves a releae but Disney doesn't own the rights.

I'm involved in the best English site for these filsm and info at www.nausicaa.net

Speaking of Miyazaki, is there any news about the upcoming "Mononoke" set that BVHE is releasing?
