Mother of 3 dies trying to win a Nintendo Wii

Post by xxhplinkxx »

Apparantly there was some sort of contest where the contestants were given bottles of water and had to keep them down without going to the bathroom. She eventually died from water intoxication.

Heres the article: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/biz ... 69122.html

Those poor kids.

That's not funny Escapay show some respect.

I think that the contest was ridiculus though. People sure do crazy things just to get something like a Wii. Even though I really want a Wii I would never do anything crazy like that.

This is just one of the most pointless and stupid things I've ever heard. I hope the radio station gets the pants sued off them for pulling such an irresponsible stunt.

I had a sort-of friend at school who went into a coma from drinking too much water. He had toothache and found that drinking iced water eased the pain, so he drank pints of the stuff. What it does is swell up the brain, and its very dangerous, as pressure builds up in the skull. At the time he was just a kid and didn't know any better.

But adults should know better. Its how most people die from taking Ectasy drugs. The drug doesn't kill you, its the water you crave/consume when you come down/chill out that does.

I've never heard of something so juvenile... and all for next to nothing really. Is anyone's health worth a Wii (or PS3, or 360)?

Lay off Escapay. Notice that xxplinkxx said he felt sorry for the kids, but Escapay said, in a light way, that we should feel more sorry for the mother, because she died so horribly (well, he hinted at that). Escapay was just pointing out that xxplinkxx didn't mention feeling sorry for the mother, when she must have been through some horrible pain before she passed away.

The whole thing is ridiculous because:

A. Why make a stupid stunt like that; that's not supervised?
and
B. Why do a stupid stunt like that; that's not supervised?

Don't people realize there are more important things to life than to put themselves in that position to get a stupid game console? Is a stupid game system worth dying for(even though I understand that she didn't want to kill herself intentionally)?

Escapay was just trying to point something out, I don't think he intended to joke on the matter.

Ack! Disney Duster, of course I feel bad for the poor mother that was trying to do something for her children, but theres nothing that can be done about that. Those kids are the ones that are alive and have to deal with it, along with their father and the rest of their family.

Oh, xxplinkxx, I didn't mean to say you weren't sorry about the mother at all, just that you didn't mention it and Escapay was pointing out that the mother went through pain, too. I actually agree with you, that the kids should be the main concern because they still have to live with pain. The pain of losing their mother.

And I must say, Wii's are very hard to get, and when your kids want a material posession, it can equal love for them or mean much more to them than it could ever mean to adults. The mother said she was doing it for her kids, and perhaps she wasn't the brightest person and didn't know it could kill her. There are adults out there who don't know everything they should.

The radio station should at least give the kids one of those Nintendos and should raise money to send the kids to school one day. They should also stop having stupid contests.

Not to be rude, or offensive, but I really think that it was the her own fault. If she didn't know the risks, she could have at least looked them up. It's actually a pretty stupid thing to do, anyway. Drink water for a gaming system? She should probably have looked into something about education for her kids, instead of killing herself so she could let her kids play video games all day long. You may think I'm cold hearted, or have no heart, but the woman, along with the other competitors, where obviously short on brains and should have known better.

Disneyboy20022, don't feel to bad. You just didn't look at it that way. Besides, Escapay did say it in a rather light manner. The misunderstanding is understandable.

So they have little brains, and brains are used to know things, and even though they had little brains, they should have known more.

Gotcha.

And about looking up to see if there would be health risks, I'm sure the woman knew there might be some, but just headaches or getting sick, not death. And if someone's stupid enough to go into the contest...they're not smart enough to think of checking for health risks in the first place.

I hate to add to the negative thoughts here, but this was really pointless of her to do.

I realize as a parent you want your child to have everything they desire, but would it really have made life so terrible if she had just told the kids no and bought a Wii in a year from now when there are more out there and probably a little cheaper?

I came close to water poisoning too once. And yes, it can come on suddenly and without warning. Generally stomach pains, headache and fatigue start it, but because they are not extreme pain, one can pass it off nonchalantly as nerves or drinking too fast...but not too much.

I do feel the station owes her children something. Be it money now or a fund set up for them. I doubt they even want the game system now. So giving that to them would probably be almost an insult.

So...am I allowed out of the time-out corner?

I did mean it light-heartedly, and also seriously. It's pathetic that people would intentionally harm themselves for a gaming system that shouldn't have been underproduced for the holiday season.

Whatever happened to 'tell us in 25 words or less' or '10th caller wins'.

While I would also like to put a hand up in favour of the radio station copping a large law suit, and the end of these pointless 'ratings' pranks and gimmicks (try playing decent music and offering interesting content instead!), I think at least part of the blame lays with the deceased. In legal terms, we would call it contributory negligence.

She wanted a product so much that she put herself in harm's way to get it. If that doesn't sum up consumer driven society, and everything that is wrong with it, then I don't know what does.

That said, the growing trend of radio and TV stations pulling jackass stunts in lieu of providing genuine entertainment is something that needs to stop. Sadly, I don't think this will be a wake-up call for anybody put the family of the deceased.

In one word Yes you are allowed out of time out "AS LONG AS YOU LEARNED YOUR LESSON :P :P

I know you didn't mean it in an  evil diabolical way or in a joking way... Ok I did think that at first but I typed before I thought it out....

Anyway Yes I hope the radio company gets suied and the kids get a Nintendo Wii and a lifetime supply of games and accessories courtesy of the Radio Station for this idiotic move that they did.... They could have just done what a lot of radio stations do... Take the 8th or 9th caller not do a stupid stunt...... Perhaps the Mom didn't realize that she could actually get water poisoning.... Which I wasn't aware of this kind of Poisoning until I read this post.... Of course I have heard of Japanese Water Torture.... In My Opinion the Radio Station is responsible.... I mean I don't think unless your on Fear Factor that you can do a stunt like this... It sounds like a bunch of teenagers thought this stunt up..... A bunch of Drunk teenagers thought of this... Anyway I have typed too long so thats my opinion that the mother might not have realized that you can die from drinking too much water could kill you as I didn't know this.....

Thing is...she didn't intentionally harm herself. Each one of our bodies is different. Each one of us can take a different amount of water before having complications. And water intoxication isn't a highly known cause of death, but it CAN happen. No one thinks water can kill us. But ANYTHING in high quanitities can kill you. Its not like she had them cut her to see how long she would bleed for her to win the prize. She drank a lot of water and held her bladder, never knowing it was dangerous. It was up to the radio station to make sure the contest wouldn't be dangerous.

For instance, bungee jumping is relativly safe. Not many people die from it. But if the radio station did bungee jumping as a contest instead and didn't check to see they were properly licensed, it would be their fault in the case of an accident. Where as they should have done more research on this before they let people do it. And if they really did give that warning before the contest, then they KNEW it could be dangerous and didn't specify what the dangers were. Most people figured they might vomit or get a UTI...but die? Not likely.
