Ariel and her Sisters Discussion

Post by xxhplinkxx »

Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella, and Alana. Not sure which is which? Here ya go...

Image

Sorry if the picture isnt that great, but that pretty much tells you whos who when it comes to Mermaid Royalty.

They've been around just as long as Ariel has, but not much is known about them. Their part really wasnt that big in movie. And the sequel only showed 4 of them! The most we've seen of them has been in the t.v. series (THAT NEEDS TO COME TO DVD!!!) :(

Arista is the one we've seen most of. Shes also my favorite sister. Most likely because shes the one whos personality we've gotten to see the most. She helped Ariel defend the palace from the Alligators (perhaps Crocodiles?) She even admitted to being jealous of Ariel and her adventures.

Alana is next in line as to who we've seen most. She dragged Ariel to go with her and Pearl to Eel-Ectric City, an underwater night club.

Adella's weight seems to be some sort of issue. In the movie, as seen above, she is skinny just like the rest of her sisters. Throughout the series, however, she seems to gain more weight with every passing episode.

The remaining three are Andrina, Aquata, and Attina. Attina seems to be the most stuck up one out of all of them. I cant really say much for Aquata or Andrina.

Another thing I've always wondered about is their ages. Some say their ages are the same order in which they sing at the beginning of the movie, which is how I listed them at the beginning of my post. The oldest starting at Aquata, and the youngest finishing at Alana. Although that is a good assumption, I have a different theory. I think that the 2 oldest are Attina and Aquata, the 2 in the middle are Andrina and Adella, and the 2 youngest are Alana and Arista.

Unfortunately thats all I know about these mermaids. Im really looking forward to TLM III and hope that the sisters have a much bigger part because I've always been fascinated by them. Oh, how I wish Disney would launch a "Disney Mermaids" line featuring these 7 lovely ladies.

So there you have my thoughts and opinions on our favorite Little Mermaids family. I'm looking forward to hearing yours!

I remember posting in another thread like this on another forum. I'll just copy that post into a quote (you've probably already said some of the stuff I said in it):
From what I remember from the series (and various comic books), the only sisters whose personalities aren't at least slightly expanded on are Andrina, Attina and Adella (although the latter does give her father the same gift every year on his birthday). Aquata is the oldest and tried to rescue Ariel after she went too far into a black mist and was captured by an eel kingdom seeking to overthrow Triton's rule (this is also the same place where it's revealed how Ursula acquired her lair). Arista is the sister that gets along with Ariel the least, getting them both "beached" during one episode and helped her stop two crocodiles from stealing the royal treasury. And Alana went along with Ariel when a girl named Pearl took them to a far away city against Triton's rules.
And that's all I've ever known about them. You'd think the series would take advantage of them more.

I only know what everyone knows about them. What I can say is that, in the following order, I think Aquata,Adrina and Attina have the most beautiful and interesting design to me. I never liked Arista because her hair has a very strange shape, like it's all stuck together in one side, it's not flowing like Ariel's. Alana and Adella's design seem very uninteresting to me, although I like Adella's colours (her shells and tail). It really irritates me the fact that they ALL have the SAME face! I think, if they were to become leading characters in a "Mermaids" series or something, they should slightly differ from each other and be given different talents and, why not, powers.

Thanks for the pic. :)

I used to have cassette tapes when I was little that had a whole story about all the sisters. They talked about their first time going to the surface on their 16th birthdays. They even talked about their ages in it. I'll see if I can find it.

:o Where is this from?! I dont think I remember that in the series.

And Poody, the cassette youre talking about could very well be the original HCA story cause thats where they go to the surface on their 16th birthdays.

I think it was called the "Serpentine" comics. If I had a scanner, I'd scan it for you (it was in a set of four). Anyway, I thought it was very interesting. As for the Ursula thing:

She was shown as sort of a wanderer (and was watching Ariel from a distance when she and Flounder went through the forbidden mist). She also didn't have Flotsam or Jetsam. Anyway, Aquata goes after Ariel (after she's been captured by the Eel King, Corneilus, who has a bratty daughter and a doormat for a wife) and has to go through some kind of electric cage with a sea monster inside. Aquata makes it out alright (and is imprisoned with Ariel I think), and then it breaks to Ursula entering the King's throne room. She offers him help in overthrowing Triton (as long as she gets to rule Atlantica of course), but he refuses. He wonders how she made it through the cage with the sea monster and she says something along the lines of, "When I want to be somewhere, dear Corneilus, I usually find my way there." Then, at the very end of the comic, she's watching Triton and Ariel in her bubble (after everything's been resolved) and says that, although she failed at getting the throne, at least she's found a suitable home for the time being.

It's also very interesting to see Ariel fighting with the eel princess because she disrespects her mother. "If I had a mother of my own, I would treat her with more respect!" or something like that.

If you dont like it, then dont come in here and troll. No one is forcing you to read it.

And thank you so much Disney's Divinity for that summary! I wish you had a scanner cause now I'm dying to see these comics!!

Well, technically a troll wouldn't know how to enlarge that smiley. :D

No offense, but seriously, a whole thread dedicated to Ariel's sisters?!? Is that really necessary, especially for characters in the movie less than like 5 minutes? Granted, it was more about the t.v. series but, to prevent Escapay from sounding like a broken record, you can always use the handy dandy "Image Search" on the top of your page.

Will there be box set of ALADDIN/LITTLE MERMAID tv series?

The Little Mermaid Discussion

The Little Mermaid Edition DVD Discussion

BY NO MEANS, the only Little Mermaid discussion, just the 2 main ones, and one about the t.v. show.

I almost feel this is just a way to up post numbers(despite having them not show), or just a way to make sure The Little Mermaid has more threads than any other movie on UD.

I guess if there's actual discussion(which to me is shocking) it okay for it to stay, but what's next? A whole discussion on the pirate Captain Hook shoots in Peter Pan? A whole discussion on the Baker from Beauty and the Beast? A whole discussion on the groundhog from The Lion King?

I"m pretty sure I remember seeing some of Ariels sisters in the Atlantica World in Kingdom Hearts 2, they help sing one of the song mini-games, I'm not sure which of them appears since I was concentrating on winning the mini-game but if I had to guess it woud be Andrina or Arista and or Attina, not sure really.

Timon/Pumbaa Fan: I agree, if you don't like it than don't read it, and why bother posting about something you don't like, it's just wasting your time, and theirs. Oh and one more thing, not everyone can come up with ideas for a thread that meets your standards, or Escapays, OR anyone elses for that matter, everyone should be able to make a thread about what they want and not get criticized by people like you. And there probably would be a discussion if YOU didn't come barging in being all sarcastic, and mean. I think that your sarcastic posts are just a way for YOU to boost YOUR post count

I'm done ranting now, I hate it when people shoot down other peoples thread topics, I'd never do that since its not my place to say what makes a good topic or not. Keep up the good topic ideas xxhplinkxx :D The Baker from Beauty and The Beast ROCKS if it weren't for him there'd be no bread for the village

I have a feeling if this was just posted in a random TLM thread, not many people would pay attention to it. Besides, what's the point of a forum if you can't make threads (provided it doesn't get too out of control, which it hasn't).
or just a way to make sure The Little Mermaid has more threads than any other movie on UD
Yes, this is all a conspiracy in order to secure TLM's place as the most-talked about movie on the site...

i can see why this is a thread. somehow, ariel's sisters seem almost magical and alluring. i have always been very, very curious about them and i am GLAD there is a thread!!

i think you mean Aquata. Arista is the cute little blonde at the top, if those are labeled correctly.
Aladdin from Agrabah wrote:It really irritates me the fact that they ALL have the SAME face!
Yes!!!!!! I noticed that too!! Then i felt crazy, but since you said it at least im not the only one

I think that would be very, very cool.

I've always for some reason thought that Attina is the oldest/leader. In Little Mermaid 3 if they show Ariels mom I'll pissed if her face looks like her daughters

No, that doesn't apply here. This isn't a "What movies come with a slipcover?", "What did you just eat?", or "What does it smell like where you are sitting?" (Oh no, did I just give someone an bad idea?)

It's a genuine discussion thread and like others have said, if you want to roll your eyes at it, you'd be just as well to keep it to yourself, as it adds nothing to discussion.

Don't worry Luke you didn't give me any ideas   One thing to note was in the book you guys were talking about Ariel has an elderly Grandmother I think, but still no mom from what I remember seeing when I read it years ago. I think all of her sisters range from as young as 17 to as old as maybe 25 for the two oldest. So Ariel would be the youngest at 16? I think thats how old she is or is that Jasmine?

Hey, I think this is a perfectly fine discussion topic. Sure, it won't be everyone's sort of thing, but it is a rather specific topic and wouldn't necessarily do well in the other Little Mermaid threads that were linked to. Furthermore, from what I've seen in this thread, people are actually discussing things and giving thoughtful answers. Also, some of you probably aren't old enough to remember that in the 90s Tyco devoted an entire line of dolls to Ariel and her sisters, as is seen by this example of an Arista doll:

So, carry on with the discussion!

See, Aladdin from Agrabah? Arista IS the blonde one, not the one-sided-hair one. YAY!

i dont know it was bothering me

im easily bothered.

OMG, who the heck approved that? lol. Her fins arent even red!! Wow, horrible doll!

And Jasmine, I dont think Al from Ag was confused. I know what he means. He's talking about how Arista's hair covers one side of her face ala Jessica Rabbit.

Also, Chernabog, I dont think I'd consider Attina the "leader", but I definitely agree that it comes down between her and Aquata as to whos the oldest. And I too saw the sisters in Kingdom Hearts II. It was hard for me to concentrate on the song cause I kept staring at them! I know one of them for sure was Andrina. I think the other one was either Attina or Aquata.

By the way, thanks to all of you for the support!! :D

I don't. It was found on Ebay, so you can always do searches there. Tyco did a lot of Little Mermaid dolls around that time, sisters included, so I'm sure they show up there every so often. A friend of mine has a whole set of them.

As far as character traits, though, I would go with the actual movie pictures rather than the dolls. This Arista here looks like she's gone on a complete early-nineties rampage!
