Whilst at DavisDVD, I noticed another blurb for an MGM film getting a two-disc treatment:

Of course, I'm genuinely glad that we're getting a two-disc edition (held off on the single-disc), and of course, noticed that this is ANOTHER of the MGM flipper SE's that's getting split across two discs now. But when oh when can I see a proper anamorphic special edition of The Graduate, or a nice multi-disc edition of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? And when will we get the single-disc special edition of Misery that the other regions have???

Thanks so much for posting this. This one definitely would have slipped by me if I didn't see this. I held off on buying this one, too - so this edition is a 'must-have' for me on that date.

I just watched The Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins on TV last night, and was just thinking about The Music Man and Fiddler on the Roof.

Even though I already own the single disc SE, I'll be buying this. This technically won't be a double dip for me since I didn't actually buy the edition I have now; a friend got it for me for Christmas last year. The single disc as it is is actually quite good. My only beef with it was there weren't any retrospective features from anyone except Norman Jewison (and Topol, if you include the commentary). The 2-Disc seems to rectify this with four new featurettes. I hope the film has been restored for this release. The single disc has great colors and sharpness, but quite a few print flaws.

I'll be picking this up when I get The Passion of the Christ: Definitive Edition the week after (which some people may find to be an ironic double purchase).

I for one am incredibly pissed at MGM for that. And the fact that a few months ago- they granted their first lavish Horror Special Edition in nearly 3 years, to... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2?!?!?! While Misery, Child's Play, and Pumpkinhead, among other MGM titles just sit on the shelf gathering dust while the casts and crews of these movies get older. And older. And older. And older. Who the hell cares about TCM 2? Who thinks it needs a commentary and like 5 featurettes?! That thing was panned by every single critic in the business!

I've never seen it, but having recently heard some songs I liked, I've wanted to check it out. I noticed there wasn't a grand SE and was wondering why... nice to see one announced. I'll probably take this as an opportunity to check it out.

I think it's gorgeous. I was wondering if they were going to replicate the current DVD's artwork and just stick a banner on it, but they actually improved upon it. The only thing I find odd is if those are Tevye's three main daughters dancing together (which they are), who's the girl and guy off in the distance behind them? Is that suppoed to be Tevye and his wife? Looks more like Tzeitel and Motel to me from the "Miracle of Miracles" scene.

Any MGM-produced film made after 1986 is still owned by MGM (and Sony, and distributed by Fox). When Ted Turner bought the MGM library, he got everything before 1986. So WB owns pre-1986 MGM, all of RKO, and of course all their pictures.

MGM owns the following:
post-1986 MGM films
United Artists
Orion Pictures
Mirisch Company
Goldwyn Company
CastleRock Entertainment (not sure the specific date, but I'm sure it's everything pre-1997)

They've also got a slew of Studio Canal pictures, as well as the entire Cannon Films catalogue.

Child's Play, I believe was an Orion Pictures release, so MGM could do with sprucing it up with a new edition. Misery was CastleRock, and I'm not sure who produced Pumpkinhead.

That's not where my confusion lies. I'm confused about why he told me that. I don't see it having much relevance on what I said. At all.

I mean - I said what I said for some pretty obvious reasons. Mainly because MGM used to be one of the great DVD companies for horror releases. Whoever owns whatever now, MGM used to release a jam-packed special edition DVD every year for at least 1 horror movie. 2000- I don't remember. 2001: Carrie. 2002: The Fog. 2003: The Howling. 2004: nothing. 2005: nothing. 2006 ... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

So, really - Warner Bros. has nothing to do with any of this. Nor do I remember mentioning it. He pointed out that Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was made post 1986, which I already know, and that it belongs to Sony. Which still seems to have no relevance on what I said.

Oh, and when Warner Bros started releasing MGM titles, it was around 2000. The same year MGM released Misery on DVD, in the same package of course as Polygram- I think MGM still owns this. Besides, this version is still in print when the other MGM DVD's that Warner re-released (Network? Poltergeist for sure, Westworld, etc.) are out of print.

And Pumpkinhead is a 1988 United Artists release. Got the same logo at the beginning as the Rocky films did.
