Introductions

Post by Ktrek »

I think that a special section should be created for Introductions by new members. I really don't like, nor am I pleased by how my intro thread was moved and merged into another thread. I was hoping for some interaction with other members but now what I have posted just gets lost in a thread that is already 47 pages long and not as likely to get read. If I had known that was going to happen I would not have spent so much time on writing an introduction. In fact probably wouldn't have spent the time and effort at all! Having been an Administrator on several message boards I think this is important.

That was me, actually, who merged your thread and I moved it into exactly the sort of thread you've just expressed a wish for. The thing is, when I moved your post into the thread, it bumped it up to the top of the page so now people who are returning to the forum will see that it has been updated and will click on it and, hopefully, read your introduction. I also left a shadow of your original post, so people are still able to read it by being directed to the official introduction thread. I definitely did not mean to undermine your first post on the forum and we are always very happy to welcome new members, especially those like you who have interesting stories to share.

If you have further questions, please take a look at Aaron's helpful thread about posting guidelines : http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... php?t=9799

Otherwise, welcome to the site. We hope to hear more from you! :tink:

Well, what was done is done but my reason for posting this thread was in hopes that a "subforum" especially for introductions would be created by the administration for people to specifcally introdce themselves. It serves a couple of purposes.

1. To give a new member a chance to say he is new and introduce himself to existing members.

2. A chance to interact and welcome the new member to the message board.

3. Responses help make a newbie feel welcomed to the community by being acknowledge rather than just another poster on the board.

I know this from experience and on my own message board we have an Introductions forum and have found it very very useful and makes the newbie feel more comfortable and at home.

The problem I have with just a thread is that after 40 some odd pages older members are not as likely to read it nor new members for that matter. BUT they are more likely to visit a forum for Introductions and read new posts.

BTW....just so you know when you click the "Moved" link it does not take me to the most current thread but back to page three for some reason and if I want to see my post I have to click the last page. It seems to me that this also would discourage members from reading the latest post. Just my opinion of course.

Hey Kevin, welcome to the forum and thanks for the feedback. I've got to agree that I think even a very long thread in General Discussion would receive more exposure and more attention than a thread in a newly-established New Members forum. I've always been pretty conservative about making new forums because I find having a lot of them dilutes the community. Obviously, discussing about anything and everything all in one place would be a bit much, so we have other forums, but not so many that you need an atlas to get around.

That said, I do think what you've said is correct to a large degree. I'm almost positive, however, that the alternative - setting up a new forum just for new member introductions would yield a lot of threads asking the questions that are plainly addressed in the sticky atop each forum and a lot of half-hearted welcomes by members trying to boost their post counts. (I think the time may have come to do away with showing the post counts altogether.) What works at another forum may not necessarily do so here.

But I'm always open to suggestions. Once again, welcome! :eye:
