New song in 'The Little Mermaid'???

Post by Tangela »

I was searching in Google for next Platinum releases and I came up with this two websites both saying that "The Little Mermaid" will feature a new song called "Sunshine only Shines on Land" and will be added in the scene were Triton destroys the statue of Eric...

i hope this is not true!!!!

*sigh*

I don't give a rat's ass what they add.
All I want is the ORIGINAL somewhere on that 2-disc set.

I want it uncut.
I want it just as it appeared in the theatres in 1989.

Period.
And I KNOW I'm not alone.

Well I think it's far too early to have definitive word either way.

I don't mind if they put a new song in, I actually would like it, just as long as they also include the original. Tangela, can you please post the 2 web sites you saw this on?? :) I would like to see!

I'm with you, indianajdp ... Sigh, indeed.

I'm just thanking my lucky stars that my then-best-friend, now-best-friend-and-husband surprised me with the Limited Issue version of The Little Mermaid when it came out....knowing how much I love the movie. :) I only wish all the Disney classics had been released on DVD prior to the Platinum Series. I fear for Cinderella, Bambi, etc.

I HATE the "all new musical number!" gimmick. It's sad that Disney doesn't have enough faith in their movies to sell on DVD in their original form.

I also hate their new trend (Beauty & The Beast, Lion King) of re-animating some scenes just because they can make it look fancier/more CGI now. Bleh. To hell with preserving the original as a work of art that should be treated with reverence. Everything has to be flashier and "up-to-date". Eisner would probably re-draw the Mona Lisa too and give her a big wide toothy grin, if he could! Or pouty 3-D lips. And he'd have her singing an All New Song! called "Here's Why I Smile So Mysteriously"

I don't have a problem, per se, with this. Technology certainly has changed since these films were animated and I can appreciate the fact that the oroginal writers want to do some things they weren't able to do at the time.

Like I said, they can tweak and add and reanimate all they want. All I ask in return is the option to watch the ORIGINAL film.

Luke, considering the ammount of traffic this site gets, you should host some sort of an unofficial petition on the homepage addressing the issue of altering Disney films from their original theatrical versions for Platinum title dvd releases, and eventually if it recieves enough signatures/votes/comments - forward it to BVHE to let them know what consumers really think and hopefully it'll be taken into consideration!

Why does Disney keep adding new parts. They think by adding new parts customers will buy more. :x

I don't buy that why not add new parts to all the Disney Classics.

I don't see what the big deal is. As long as the include the original theatrical release, I don't care how many new songs they put in the special edition.

Although, personally, I find myself watching the SE of B&TB more than the original version...

I mean, I've never heard of this "Sunshine only Shines on Land" song, but maybe it was one of the originals that didn't make the cut. If that was the case, I'd welcome its addition.

Is it me or does that sound like an odd place to add a musical number anyway? The movie plays just fine without any extra bit of emotional tip to go along with and I think a musical number might slow the action of movie down.

If Triton gets a solo, I'm not very interested. :P

Eh, I've about given up on Disney not messing with their original pictures. Just give me the original theatrical version and I'll remain quiet and subdued.

Now now, Lucas has only messed with five movies: Star Wars I, II, IV, V, and VI. Eisner so far has only messed with two movies: Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King. We have no proof (well, hopefully not) that others will be changed (Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Snow White, etc.)

You know, this has really taken the place of the sequel bashing here on the boards.

Clarification:

Just to let you know, the new two Star Wars movies seen in theaters are NOT what's on the DVD.

Six - don't forget American Graffiti (the closing scene was altered for the DVD). And to be fair, it's not as if Lucas has many other films to mess with. Percentage wise he's altered over 50% of his films if not more! (I can only think of 5 more Lucas films).

Perhaps he'll start messing with other people's films next. It must be a compulsion.

"David, Don't you think Eraserhead would be better if we added some extra effects? How about we fix the baby? Make it a fully CGI creation? Cash-in hand, nothing else said, know what I mean?"

"Sam, Wouldn't Evil Dead be better with CGI? I'll do if for you, knockdown price. CGI Decomposing Deadite at the end. Sorted."

"Hey, Richard. Wouldn't the symbolism in Donnie Darko be better if Frank the Bunny as Frank the Ewok? Let you use the rights for a knockdown price. Excellent."

"Hey Coppola, know what would make the Godfather Pt III the best film of all time? We remove your daughter Sofia with digital effects and replace her with Natalie Portman. ILM will do it for you, cheap as chips!"

Evil Dead's ending should and will never be messed up,and some people may be happy with a Sofia Coppola alteration.Hard to believe people rave about her now(for her directing:The Virgin Suicides,Lost In Translation). Also, what happened to the women in American Graffiti?Otherwise,Eisner's an idiot. So's Lucas.

I see a lot of "I don't mind what they change/add as long as I get the original too" comments here...

Do you all really think Disney will give us the REAL original theatrical versions of their movies, along with their altered version?

I don't believe it. Not after they promised us the originals of Beauty & The Beast and the Lion King would be included on the Platinum DVDs... which turned out to be totally false advertising.

I'm not trying to start a panic here or "bash" anybody. But I have a right to criticize what Disney's been doing lately, especially when they lie to their customers.

I hope I'm wrong and we'll see the original Little Mermaid on the Platinum DVD, but I doubt it. It seems to me that after Disney spends so much money animating (and advertising) new scenes/songs for their movies, that's the only version they want us to see. They probably believe they've improved it and nobody would want to see the "old" version anymore. Hmmph. The lack of respect for their history depresses me.

 I agree with you 100 percent! :) I love the special edition of Beauty and the Beast also, and I am really interested in this "Sunshine only Shines on Land"! Also it would probably sound great since Jodi Benson can still do the singing. My opinion on The Lion King's "Morning Report is that the new voice sounded NOTHING like the original Simba's voice, therefore I didn't like it.

I don't care if they add a new song (as long as the original's available) and as long as they don't change any other animation. Heck, I might even like the new song: Jodi Benson has "de most beautiful voice!"
