Vintage Disney Music on iTunes!!!!!

Post by goofystitch »

As was reported on the front page, in honor of Walt Disney Records 50th anniversary, they are releasing vintage records for digital download. I felt that a thread should be made listing all of the albums available as well as track listings. So here they are:

The two major releases are two volumes of the Walt Disney Records Archive Collection. The first volume is worthwhile due to it's large number of unreleased songs, but the second volume is more modern and a Disney music collector would likely have most of the songs on it. It reuses many Disney Mania songs. They are $9.99 each. Each contains 25 songs, so instead of listing them all, I will list the songs that aren't available on other albums.
Volume 1
1.) "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" by The Wellingtons
6.) "All in the Golden Afternoon" by Darlene Gillespie
7.) "Little April Shower" by Camaratta

A collection of 20 peoms set to song. I hadn't heard of any of them and none of them are particularly Disney oriented. All songs are sung by Beverly Gile. This album holds the least amount of interest for me out of all of the Disney albums released. From the clips I've heard, the songs would be best used for nostalgia purposes for anyone who listened to it as a kid.

The Archives Collection Volume One is fantastic. There are some great alternative versions of some classic Disney tunes. The arrangement on Little April Showers is real swinging, so is the tune by Mary Martin. Cliff Edwards take on Singing in the Rain is a Showstopper!

They really did a good job of picking tunes that flowed together real nicely. It's a lively, upbeat listen all the way through. Absolutely worth the ten bucks!

I'm going to pick up the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack they are offering based on the great sample they provide on the Archives collection!

I've already purchased the archives collection volume 1 as well as Ludwig Von Drake and Summer Magic. I already own Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland. I plan to eventually pick up the Alice in Wonderland by Camarata, Mary Martin Hi-Ho, and Sebastian. I will possibly get volume 2, or just buy the songs I want since I have over half of them already. I might also get the MMC ones, especially the serials.

These two are available on the "Disney Wishes!" CD (not to be confused with the Wishes fireworks soundtrack CD), which is pretty much Disney Mania with established adult artists (except Jesse McCartney and the *ugh* Disney Princesses)

Track Listing:
1. A Whole New World - Peabo Bryson/Regina Belle
2. Someday My Prince Will Come - Barbra Streisand
3. Can You Feel the Love Tonight - Elton John
4. Your Heart Will Lead You Home - Kenny Loggins
5. You'll Be In My Heart - Phil Collins
6. When you Wish Upon A Star - Jesse McCartney
7. A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes - Linda Rondstadt
8. The Bare Necessities - Tony Bennett
9. Baby Mine - Bette Midler
10. You've Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman
11. If You Can Dream - Disney Princesses
12. My Funny Friend and Me - Sting
13. Part of Your World - Olivia Newton-John
14. Make a Wish - Kevin Sharp
15. Wishes - Peabo Bryson/Kimberly Locke, with Jim Brickman

It's a pretty good CD, though I've only seen it in the parks. My one gripe is the inclusion of the Disney Princess song, which has a nice message, but just feels so out of place among the other established artists. Ditto for McCartney. He's got a good voice, but it just doesn't make sense to include him in this line-up, when he's better suited for Disney Mania.

I know, but that compilation isn't on iTunes and those two songs were among the top 5 best selling on volume 2, so I figured I would add them.

Me too. I'm surprised it wasn't in this first wave seeing as it's a Christmas themed film and the soundtrack from Disneyland sells on ebay for $40+. I've been dying to have all the music for that for years. All I have is "Castle in Spain" from the Disney Classics set. I had almost half of the songs from "Summer Magic" from compilations, but I'm glad to have the whole thing now. Also, "Professor Ludwig Von Drake" is HYSTERICAL and I highly reccomend it to everyone. It's under $7.

Well, it's finally January. The month that Disney promised to release more obscure records to iTunes and they held up to their word. It's too bad for people who don't own iPods, though... or those who prefer actual CD-quality music... or hate DRM-enabled files. Only the last two apply to me, as I actually do own an iPod; but I've never downloaded any lossy files from Apple or anyone else.

True, but even if you didn't have an iPod you could still buy and burn the CD. Also given that the audio quality of the songs are already iffy due to age, it;s not that big of a loss.

I thought the point of these things is that a lot of them aren't available on CD, though (or, at least, only Disneyland exclusive or something)? I certainly have never seen any of these in a music store... although I do own the Mickey Mouse Disco vinyl picture disc.

I think you misunderstand me. I mean, regardless of if you have an iPod, you can still download the CDs off iTunes then burn those songs onto a CD.

Ah, okay... now I see what you meant. Yes, I suppose you could do that, but it still wouldn't help with the lack of true CD-quality sound. There's also the fact that many people like to have an actual, official CD with liner notes, etc. instead of some insubstational computer bytes on a CD-R.

Very true, this is always my dillema when buying a song off iTunes. It's not as big a deal for me for just a few songs, but I do dislike buying albums in full. Sadly, since there's no other plausible option for me, I have to deal. Not ideal conditions, but I'm glad to be getting some of this music at all.

I have one more addition thanks to SpringHeelJack. He believes it was released on iTunes about a year ago.

The Black Cauldron (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) 1988 $8.91
1. Escape from the Castle
2. Taran
3. The Witches
4. Gurgi
5. The Horned King
6. The Fair Folk
7. Hen Wen's Vision
8. Eilonwy
9. Finale

Once again, this isn't the original soundtrack, but it is quite close. The score was re-recorded in 1988 by Elmer Burnstein, the composer, with the Utah Symphony. However, with a film score, what you really want are the themes, which are all presented here.

Mouseketodd has tipped us off to 4 more releases made available on January 16th. Some of these are amazing! Perhaps the most anticipated is...

Babes In Toyland (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) 1961 $9.99
Once again, this isn't exactly the soundtrack, as all of the songs appear to have been re-recorded, but unlike Saludos Amigos, this one is at least done by the original cast. Most notably changed is "We Can't Do the Sum" which for whatever reason doesn't double Annette's voice like in the film and that particular song comes off as lacking with the changes. "Never Mind Bo Peep" suffers from actually being slowed down! However, we should be thankful to be able to even buy this in a current media form.
1. Babes In Toyland Overture (Instrumental Version)
2. Mother Goose Village and Lemonade
3. We Won't Be Happy 'Til We Get It
4. Just a Whisper Away
5. Slowly He Sank to the Bottom of the Sea
6. Castle In Spain
7. Never Mind Bo Peep
8. I Can't Do the Sum
9. Floretta
10. Forest of No Return
11. Go to Sleep
12. Toy Land
13. Workshop Song
14. Just a Toy
15. March of the Toys (Instrumental Version)
16. Tom and Mary

Let's Fly With Mary Poppins by Louis Prima and Gia Maione 1965 $9.99
This is every major song from the classic film re-done by Louis Prima and Gia Maione. Anytime you see the words "dub version," it has been done in what I believe is Italian. I personally don't much care for his renditions and probably won't be buying this album.
1. A Spoonful of Sugar
2. Feed the Birds
3. The Perfect Nanny (Duet Version)
4. Chim Chim Cher-ee
5. Sister Suffragette
6. Stiamo Svegli (Dub Version)
7. Jolly Holiday (Duet Version)
8. Stay Awake
9. Let's Go Fly a Kite
10. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (Duet Version)
11. I Love to Laugh (Duet Version)
12. Supercalifragilistic-espiralidoso (Dub Version)

Echoes of Disneyland by Dee Fisher 1957 $9.99
This album is many classic Disney songs played on an organ by Dee Fisher. It doesn't contain any of the songs typically associated with Disneyland because many of the key attractions with songs weren't open yet. It is mostly hit Disney songs. Interestingly, some more obscure, but still wonderful songs appear on this album such as "Two Silhouettes" and one of my favorites, "Lavender Blue."
1. Second Star to the Right
2. Little April Shower
3. A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes
4. Blue Shadow On the Trail
5. Bella Notte
6. La la Lu
7. Some Day My Prince Will Come
8. When You Wish Upon a Star
9. Two Silhouettes
10. Lavender Blue
11. One Song
12. Alice In Wonderland
13. Love Is a Song

And last, but most deffinatley not least, Tinpanorama 1965 $9.99
This is all of the songs from "A Symposium of Popular Songs" found on the Disney Rarities volume of the Walt Disney Treasures series. It's one of my all time favorite Disney shorts and will go nicely with my Ludwig Von Drake album. This is the only soundtrack released in this wave that appears to be the actual soundtrack and not a re-recording.
1. Rutabega Rag

It sounds like a lot of people are writting off some of these new iTunes releases because they are not the "actual" recordings from the movies. That's a shame, because they are all great pieces of Disney history. As revealed in the new book "Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records" these studio recordings were very common practice back in the 50's & 60's and many of them feature a host of talented musicians, songwriters and performers from the Disney stable.

The Alice in Wonderland record that was made available on iTunes last year is not an original soundtrack recording, but it is a beautifuly orchestrated presentation of the score with new vocals by Darleene from the Mickey Mouse Club. It's a great listen!

The new Saludos Amigos record is also filled with wonderful pieces of music that are moody and filled with international flavor.

Walt Disney Records/Disneyland Records is a major part of the Disney Legacy... I hope alot of people will take the time to slow down and appreciate some of the work that was created for the label.

I think you misunderstand what I meant edsouth. I wasn't complaining that the records released were studio recordings. I'm eternally greatful that Disney is releasing these songs today in a contemporary format. However, it would have been nice to have gotten songs like "The Three Caballeros" sung by Donald and the gang because that is the version I remember from my childhood. And I prefer some of the songs from the movie "Babes in Toyland" to their studio versions. However, I intend to by the Alice album by Camaratta one of these days. I love the clips I have heard. And I'm going to read Mouse Traks when I'm done with Neil Gabler's Walt Disney.

And I'd just rather have them on CD.

Can anyone post the iTunes Store URL to the page that lists all these titles together? I can find a generic "Classic Disney Exclusives" page, but I don't think it has all the titles as presented on the one splash page I saw. It was yellow/gold in color and had a big "Walt Disney Records 50th Anniversary" banner at the top with an explanation of why these songs were being released.

Anyone...anyone?

TIA
