Disney DVDs at Public Libraries

Post by Lady »

I hadn't realized this until last week, but public libraries have Disney DVDs that you can borrow for a week. My public library is huge (4 stories) and they have like 40 something Disney animated and live action DVDs!
:o

They even had Sleeping Beauty Special Edition, Lion King Platinum and Disney Treasures (Disneyland and Mickey in Living Color)! I couldn't believe they had the treasures given that even my local Blockbuster (movie rental store) doesn't carry these.

I just thought I would post this for others who were not aware. I'm figuring that now I can just borrow Disney DVDs at the library until they are released as definitive 2-disc sets at which point I can buy them to add to my Disney collection. If you are not sure what your local library carries, then you can always call ahead or check online.

Yeah, my public library has had some good stuff - I've rented Sword in the Stone, The Rookie, and The Aristocats from them that I can recall, at least. But it's slim pickings now that everyone seems to have a DVD player - 3 or 4 years ago, they had stuff and not so many people had players.

They ought to get more live action stuff - so I can rent and review for free, minus the time it takes. ;)

Do you guys have to pay to get DVDs out?

I had to pay $1 for each DVD I wanted to check out. I don't get it, its a library everything should be able to get checked out for free. But, maybe they feel that the DVDs will be safer that way...

:) :) :)

PS: Luke, I liked your old avatar better... Or, maybe I was just used to it...

That's lousy, Tangela. My library only charges you if you "hold" something - otherwise they're free. You can only take out 2 at a time, though, and they do have other safety precautions, but you still wind up with some really poorly-treated DVDs.

The library I work in has recently bought a stack of DVD.
I was pleased to see at least one box in the first shipment was full of Disney DVDs. I think if it is available on DVD in Australia at the moment and is feature-lengthish, then we have it.
Our and videos are a 3 week borrowing period, and no charge for members (if you aren't a member, there is no charge either, but you can't take them :P). I'm guessing DVDs will e the same story...

I am a librarian and I can echo Luke's comment. DVD's are very poorly treated by the average patron. Libraries invest a large portion of their materials budget towards A/V (this includes DVD's, videos, books on CD and tape, CD's, software) and they are the most abused items in the library. Patrons either don't care how they handle them or just don't know the proper way to handle AV. My library does not charge you to check out AV items, but I can understand why some libraries have had to start charging. It gets very expensive to replace these items. So, moral of the story is-if we are forced to purchase two or three copies of Monsters, Inc. due to the fact that our copies are broken, scratched, stolen, etc. , that's just less money for buying new titles. So, from the librarians side-if you borrow AV from your public library, please treat is as you would your own.

BTW, I just ordered a BUNCH (30 or so) of new Disney titles for our NEW library, opening in just a few weeks!

which library do you work at loomis?

got any good disney coffee table reads?

i actually have The Disney Villain by Frank and Ollie out...(although i have had that out almost the whole year through renewals... )

As for the DVD's at my local library...i have always wondered what would happen to that Snow White Platinum (although its not called platnium over here) Edition if some desparate person without it decided that no penalty rate for 'losing it' was too high...!...hmmm...

Yes, DDFan, that's it! We should be open in 5 or so weeks. We have just finished moving the old collection to the new building and the first of the new books arrived today!!

I can't give away that info - I have to remain mysterious
We do have a few 'coffee table' style books - Disney Villain, Disney Ultimate Visual Guide, Illusion of Life (Frank and Ollie) and then there are all the ones I have out via countless renewals :P
Maltin's Disney Films, Encyclopedia of Disney Animated Characters, The Art of Walt Disney, Imagineering...
There are more, but they are the ones I can think of now.
We actually have quite a bit for a municipal library.
I've kinda put suggestions in for a few over my almost 7 year tenure there...

I have the same at most people's libraries though I don't have a DVD player. I check out books and Videos and CD's...

ours is a 7 day rental too.. but we can only place a max of 20 Items on hold.

no charge either .though their is a dollar fine for every day it's out, :P

but it stinks when the "special editons " come they only order them on DVD :P and everyone else gets stuck with old tapes..*sigh*

Encyclopeida of animated characters! I love that book! :) thanks loomis! forget the title for a while .. my library has the 97 version ;)

and you can check out up to 100 items at the library (providing it's in the library your'e in ;))
