"Fantasia" Soundtrack

Post by musicradio77 »

I went to a record store called "Yaya's" where they sell used vinyl, and guess what, I found the soundtrack to "Fantasia". It was a 3-record album and it's in good condition. This soundtrack is a collectable for every Disney fan. It had a rainbow Buena Vista label on it. They did that on numerous Annette Funicello albums as well as the "Mary Poppins" soundtrack. It comes with a 24-page book about the songs and the film. It is a great find. I hope I should keep the LP for years to come if I'm a Disney collectable. I also have the same album on cassette with the anniversary edition. That was from 1990 where "Fantasia" was re-released as a 50th anniversary. Last time I saw "Fantasia" I saw in theaters was 16 years ago. That brings a tear to my eye. I have the original VHS release in my collection, but I don't have the DVD of the special edition because I didn't have a chance to get since all of the "Fantasia" DVD's as well as the 3-DVD Anthology edition is still out of print. :( Try Ebay for all the "Fantasia" stuff. I have this pic courtesy of Ebay of the album that I bought today. Here it is.

Nice. I have the CD soundtrack, but nothing brings back memories like the old records.

I've also got an LP set like that. Nice piece. I've also got a VHS box set of Fantasia that includes the "soundtrack" on two CDs.

I'm very envious and glad you brought this subject up....

I was just listening to the Mousepod Podcast about the movie Fantasia and was thinking how nice it would be to obtain a copy of the DVD and perhaps the soundtrack if possible. (I've never seen the movie). I imagine it is pretty expensive being an OOP though.

I know. I remember listening to Jesse's "Mousepod" back last winter when he was talking about "Fantasia" for almost 2 hours. That was the last time Jesse did for his show before he took a break from "Mousepod".

I love Jesse's show and it was great, but I don't really see a "Dumbo" episode coming anytime soon.

To get back on the subject, "Fantasia" was a great soundtrack album and it was released in 1957. If you look up in the opening page of the album that it has a 1957 copyright on the album. It was originally on the Disneyland label at the time before it ended up on the Buena Vista label for a long time. I know if you are interest to see the pics of the label when it was on the "Fantasia" LP. I have this one here.

Great find, MR77! I take it that you have a record player, then?

As for the MousePod, I recorded a new Dumbo segment with Jesse earlier this summer (to replace the now out-of-date one I had done earlier in the year), so I'm still hoping that the MousePod will return when Jesse gets some time.

Where can I find the Fantasia podcast?

I'm a big Fantasia fan and hearing someone talk about it for 2 hours seems like a great thing to me! :)

You should check out the "Fantasia" one on Jesse's Mousepod. Here is the link:

Who hasn't got a record player? :P The Fantasia LP set shouldn't be that hard to find on eBay.

I don't know about getting the record but I DID go over to Amazon and check on the prices for Fantasia on DVD - there is a huge price difference between collecting the early 1 disc Fantasia DVD and the later 3-disc. the 3-disc looks like $80 and up! the 1-disc you can buy in good used condition for like $26 and up.

I have a record player since I was a "lounge music" collector in the mid 1990s (and have a significant punk record collection going back to my teenage years) - it is always hooked up and ready to play a record. I've heard there are actually kids today that have never even seen a record or record player or owned one. :o (I think we should do a UD poll on this!) I am wondering how hard it will be to find a replacement needle when the time comes!

Well, that makes about the same amount per disc...

As for replacement needles - that technology is so utterly simple and IMO still so widespread after all these years that I wouldn't really worry.

I also went to Barnes & Noble today and I bought the "Fantasia" CD. It has the same songs used in the 1957 3-LP set. It was originally released in 1990 as a "Remastered Original Soundtrack Edition", but it has a different CD cover used for the "Fantasia" DVD, but the CD was kinda looked a lot like old, just like a used CD. The 1990 CD release was kinda similar to the 1957 original release on vinyl. The first CD has 9 tracks and second CD has 6 tracks. The 3 album set has 8 cuts. Side 1 has 2 tracks except for side 2. Sides 3, 4, 5 and 6 each has a single track. Here is the cover of the CD I bought today.

so there is a CD version of this release even though there are "extra" tracks not found on the album? I may try to find the CD now that I know this. Thanks!

There should be no "extra music" here - "Fantasia" is "Fantasia", right? IMO there should be no room for more or less music. I guess making the Bald Mountain/Ave Maria segment one "track" on one release, two on the other, for instance, could account for the different numbers of "tracks". Am I right or wrong?

I have a 2-CD set of the soundtrack from 1982, but it is "Based on the Original Soundtrack by Leopold Stokowski." This version is a fully digital recording, conducted by Irwin Kostal.

I don't know if this one was ever included as a soundtrack for the actual movie (theatrical or home video,) or not...

In a 1982 (or somewhere around that time) rerelease, the soundtrack of Fantasia was rerecorded as the original 1940 soundtrack at the time was pretty worn out. I believe that for the 1990 rerelease, Disney restored the original track and put it back in the film.

No! The CD doesn't have extra tracks, but it was the same as the 1990 release.

The 1982 rerelease contains the songs conducted by Irwin Costell. Irwin was the conductor for the "Mary Poppins" soundtrack back in 1964. The 1990 release contains the restoration of the original track where it goes back to the way it was since the first LP when it was first released in 1957.

I fell in love with that movie, absolutely loved the music. This has reminded me that I really should get something of Fantasia though. *Sigh*
