Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest SPOILER SPACE

Post by Jake Lipson »

We've got a thread for critic reaction and whatnot, but I thought we could use a new thread for reactions from members. This is INTENDED as a SPOILER THREAD, so don't be afraid to use it (I won't be), and if you HAVEN'T seen the movie yet, what on Earth are you doing on this page in the first place? I'm seeing the movie in about an hour and will check back in here with thoughts when I'm done. Arr! :)

All right, I'm back and I loved the movie and all, but since everyone else in the other thread seems to be cautiously tiptoing around the big spoilers, again I see a need for this thread too.

Where do I even start with this?

I thought the movie was really tremendous; like all the best sequels, it manages to honor and continue what was so special about the firt one while upping the ante considerably and widening the scope of it all. My head is still busy trying to digest all of it, but the biggest thing on my mind at the moment is, of course, the cliffhanger. It happened once before when I read the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2000, and now again -- perhaps even more truly this time because it's a film that's responsible for it this time -- I can say I know what it must have felt like for Star Wars fans back in 1980 as the end credits of The Empire Strikes Back started to roll. Except that we only have to wait ten months this time, thankfully.

I am also glad to see that Barbosa will be getting a large role in the third one again, as well; I knew he was in the cast list for Dead Man's Chest but figured that he was either a ghost or it was a flashback or a dream sequence or...well, heck, anything other than what we did get. And I also love the fact that it's definately going to cause a lot of friction when Jack discovers Barbosa alive in the third one after having tried to kill him for so long. It reminds me of Jafar's line, "How many times do I have to kill y ou, boy?!" from Aladdin. Which reminds me...when Elizabeth kissed Jack at the end in order to chain him to the ship, was anyone else reminded of the Jafar/Jasmine kiss in Aladdin? I bring it up especially because the same writers scripted both of them (and the original Pirates, as well.)

Thoughts?

I loved the film, cannot wait till "At worlds end"...but these are some of the burning questions im still curious about.

1. Why is Barbossa's monkey still cursed throughout the film? At the end of "CotBP", they broke the curse and Barbossa died...and the rest of the crew except for those who werent injured also died...so why is that the monkey is still cursed? Could he still have a piece of the treasure? or could this have something to do with why barbossa is alive? Especially considering that Jack uses the monkey as payment for Tia Dalma, and she is fact is the person whom im assuming brings Barbossa back from wherever he was.

2.I thought any of the scenes involving the supposed "love triangle" between jack/elizabeth/will...and even norrington were interesting...yet im a bit curious if the writers were trying to make us question who it is that elizabeth truly wants. I have no doubt in my mind that it is obviously Will, seeing as how the entire drive behind both Will and Elizabeth's in both films is for each other...but at that point when the compass points at jack and elizabeth is startled by the idea...was that supposed to hint at the ending or at the possibility that elizabeth may truly want jack?

At the moment this is all that pops in...

like i said... LOVED THIS MOVIE...seen it twice already!

BTW: The new disney intro is awesome!!!

If you see Curse of the Black Pearl again, wait till the credits are over, you'll see the monkey taking a coin from the chest. He is cursed again.

Is Captain Barbosa still alive because Jack shot him before Will dropped the coin in the chest? He just lives with a bullet inside him? I mean Jack had a sword through him and he survived.

Disney Duster's Pirates 2 Comments!

Post by Disney Duster »

Curse you, Jake Lipson! You beat me to the punch! (hey we really need a pirate-related argh! smiley) Anyway, we really needed this thread, a thread for people who have actually seen the movie, not just read critic's reviews.

Well I just finished the 7:00 showing of the movie. My friend and I actually got there at 5:00 to be first in line, playing Mario Kart on our Nintendo DS as we waited. When they started seating, we quickly judged what would be the middle of the middle seats, and sat there. Then the previews began, and then the film, and... I must say, it was AWESOME!!!!!! It was by far the best movie of the summer(well, unless Superman was better but I heard it was not that good) and definately one of the best of the year! I personally liked it better than the first one! Here's the only reasons it should garner any negativity:

If the critic giving the negativity to POTC: Dead Man's Chest did not like the first film.

POTC: Dead Man's Chest did not have the same level of romance between Will and Elizabeth.

POTC: Dead Man's Chest had a cliff hanger instead of wrapping up nicely as the first one did.

So I really think most poeple's opinions of the movie should be that it was either almost as good or better than the original, POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl. I liked it better.

As to my thoughts, I thought it had a lot more humor than the first one, and most of it was shoved into the first half, but I liked it. I did not like how it had cliff hanger, because the first one did not end in a cliff hanger(unless you count the monkey after the credits). I did like how the ending excited me, I just wish it hadn't been a cliff hanger. I'm very happy Barbosa was brought back, because instead of each movie having individual story arcs, making each one seem sort of like an episode, the stories were all tied into one, making them all inter-related, so it's like you need to watch the sequels to complete the whole story. That's awesome.

So, the movie is excellent and I hope it gets the huge numbers of people and money it seems to be sailing toward. A movie that is not good does not deserve to make a huge, record-breaking amount of money, but a good movie like this certainly deserves to make a huge, record-breaking amount of money. And after what happend to Cars, I really, really want it to make record-breaking money and be the hit Disney was hoping for.

I just got back from seeing Dead Man's Chest and boy was it good!!! I really liked the cliff-hanger ending with Barbossa. I had NO IDEA he was going to be in it.

I have a question: in the beginning when Capt. Jack Sparrow shot the bird through the coffin-thing he was in, did people laugh? They did at my showing and I didn't really think it was all that funny.

Oh also! I thought the new Disney logo was pretty sweet too.
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

yes in my theater people laughed...including myself.

I loved how so far for every film Jack's entrance is never what it seems. First it was the excellent pirate theme with him looking all bad ass only to have it be a sinking little rowboat...and now in this one some random coffins that are being chucked out on some scary island prison, only to have jack be in them and row himself with a skeleton leg!

I wonder what jack's arrival in limbo will be like...

gosh this movie was great!

And get you all excited for "At Worlds End" here is my generic fan poster

Well I saw it for a second time last night! Still love it!

I'm really torn between which is best out of COTBP and DMC, they both have a lot going for them. Ultimately I think the combined story of DMC and AWE will make them the better movies. Though I'm not sure they can top the ending for COTBP as it was near perfect.

Just wanted to add about the cursed monkey/Barbossa's return. The monkey was cursed again when he took the gold out of the chest at the end of COTBP's credits, but I don't think that's got anything to do with Barbossa's return. I think that's all Tia Dalma (not sure why she'd do it though). If you watch closely when she's getting Jack his dirt, Jack the Monkey is sat on a table next to a pair of boots of someone who is lying down (our first clue that Barbossa was returning). Plus Barbossa isn't cursed, he was really enjoying that apple!

Harbinger - Jack was cursed when Barbossa stabbed him, but the curse was lifted as soon as Jack shot Barbossa so the bullet was still inside and he died from the still open wound (and I'm guessing pierced heart).

I personally loved Jack's entrance. It was comical and unexpected. It didn't top his entrance in the first movie, but it was just as funny only in a different way. I loved it when Gibbs went to give him a hand on to the ship and Jack passes him the leg!

I love the implied history between Jack and Tia Dalma.

Btw did anyone else notice that the necklace in Tia Dalma's hut (the one next to the ring Jack steals) is VERY similar to the one next to Davy Jones' organ when Will steals the key? Could there be a connection there?

I'm really torn between who I want Elizabeth to end up with in AWE! I don't want to see her and Will break up, but based on DMC she and Jack are much more suited as a couple (plus Will seeing the kiss means that the relationship may end anyway). I loved the way they both tried to seduce each other and prove that they were alike. It was great the way the Jack became the "good man" Elizabeth believed him to be at the same time as she became the pirate he knew she was at heart. They'd really complement each other as a couple. Plus you could tell they were both disappointed when they didn't kiss before they reached Isle Cruces.

The return of Norrington was great (I miss Murtogg and Mullroy!) and gave far more depth to his character.

I was unsure about Ragetti and Pintel coming back, in fact at first I thought it was a really bad idea. But by the end it seemed a natural fit and it worked really well. Plus should Jack and Barbossa end up fighting it'll be interesting to see which Captain they side with.

Favorite moments for me were;
Jack's last stand against the Kraken
Elizabeth and Jack trying to persuade each other that he was a good man/she was a pirate, and both being right at the end (plus the kiss and the fact he admired her for basically killing him)
Elizabeth knocking out Norrington in the bar fight
Jack's hilarious escape from the cannibals
Elizabeth "persuading" Beckett to sign the Letters of Marque
Will getting slapped by the Tortuga girls
The 3 way fight at the end and Elizabeth's initial reaction to it
And of course the return of Barbossa at the end

Roll on May 2007!

Not seen Superman Returns yet (out next week over here), but it has a LOT to beat, and based on reviews I'm not sure if it can (and I love Superman!).

Maybe he wants to reclaim the Pearl? At the end he did say "what's been happening with my ship?" or something like that.

Maybe he's not such a bad guy any more - the curse taught him not to mutiny, and all he's wanted since then was to eat a good apple (which he was doing in DMC). Of course I doubt that's the case, but if Jack has to fight Barbossa as well as Sao Feng, Davy Jones, Norrington, and Beckett then he's got a LOT of work to do! I think Jack and Barbossa will work together purely because the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and Beckett working with Davy Jones is bad for ALL pirates.

Wow, ChrisLyne, you picked up on all this stuff I never noticed(probably partly because you saw it twice)! You're amazing at finding all this stuff! The filmakers obviously had Barbosa enjoying eating and apple to show that he is no longer cursed and undead! You're pretty clever at picking these things out and making predictions!

I thought the movie was absolutely amazing. I have one question though that is bugging me, and maybe someone here has an idea.

So, at the beginning of the movie, what exactly happened at the wedding to make Elizabeth be sitting on the cliff in the rain on her wedding day? The arrest hadn't happened yet...no one died that I could tell...the warrants hadn't been issued...Jack wasn't in any known trouble...

I definitley missed whatever it was that made her all depressed or whatever. Thanks to anyone who can illuminate the scene for me.

When this first happened...i assumed it was going to be a dream sequence like the beginning of the first...only of her seeing a horrible wedding day for herself, but once it was shown to be presently happening, I assumed it was because maybe elizabeth saw the boats, and all the commotion of them going through the city that she knew it mustve been something bad...so she soaked up (literally) what she could of her ruined wedding day.

It did make for stunning visuals.

I loved this film!!! Gonna see it again tonight!

Thanks! You're right, some of that (like Barbossa's boots when she's getting the dirt) was from my second viewing.

I can't wait to see it again! I want to learn all the classic lines like "see, undead monkey, top that!" and "what did the bird say?!" Of course it may take a while to learn the cannibal lines.... :D

I just came back from watching it, and WOW was I blown away! This is the best film of 2006 for me so far, and I even liked this slightly better than the first. The cliffhanger with Barbossa is what I can't out of my mind. Like Jake, I knew he'd be back, but since there was no press coverage of it at all, I just figured he was part of a flashback scene. I'm really wondering how they're going to explain the fact that he's still alive.

Everything about this film is bigger than the first, and while bigger isn't always better, it works for Pirates' advantage. The last 40 minutes of non-stop action had me in awe; I was constantly going, "they can't possibly top that...holy crap, they did!" I love how all of the characters kept double-crossing each other. It made for a very unpredictable movie experience. Let me just pull a Veruca Salt for a minute and scream, "I want to see Pirates 3 NOW!!"

I dont entirely understand how a mere mortal chinese pirate played by Chow Yun Fat could be worse than Davy Jones...unless he turns out to be very savage and a ruthless killer with some sort of supernatural abilities.

Or maybe Chow isnt the villain but a new ally for our crew

Thanks for the compliments on the poster...Memorial Day 2007 cant get here any sooner!!!
