Cancelled Disney Animated Film Projects

Post by Wonderlicious »

I remember reading a few websites a few years ago that had information on Disney films that had been recently cancelled. I remember some of them included a film versions of Don Quixote (that was going to be made by the Brizzi brothers), and I remember there were titles such as My Peoples and A Few Good Ghosts floating around as well. I'm sure that there were a few more, but I can't remember what they were. Can anyone remember any of the other films that were in development and then shelved over at Disney?

Don't forget "The Search for Mickey Mouse", in which Mickey was going to be missing and to find him, Minnie would have to team up with Basil of Baker Street. <strike>And of course that would lead to The Great Mouse Detective 2. </strike>.

Wow, I was thinking about that first movie a few days ago. Is that the one made with puppets at the Florida Animation studios? I remember reading that Abraham Lincoln was in it.

Other movies I remember were Fraidy Cat, The Emperor and the Nightingale, and The Snow Queen. I know the last one for sure is being made into a new stage musical at Tokyo Disney Sea and Alan Menken will be writing the music.

Another thing I just thought of that T/P Fan reminded me of...what's happening with the Mickey in Space movie? Wasn't Disney TV Animation supposed to be making it?

ETA: http://homepage.usask.ca/~jjs142/movielist.htm is where I used to go for Disney news before I came here to UD. Some of the rumored news is pretty old, but this site does get updated; in fact, the webpage master updated it last on June 15, 2006. Here's a list of rumored features from Disney based on rumors and confirmations of story pitches Disney has purchased. As you can see, some are already confirmed, already made, or reworked like Brother Bear 2, The Emperor's Newer Groove, Leroy and Stitch, etc.

By the way, does anyone know what My Peoples and A Few Good Ghosts were going to be about? I'm guessing that the former would have been about people and the latter about ghosts.

Unless I am mistaken, I think My Peoples used to be called Angel and Her No-Good Sister or something like that. I think you're right about the the ghosts movie, lol.

Well, I don't know about the story either, however, there is a site right here which plays a montage of a few animated films and you can find the only animation they did for A Few Good Ghosts and maybe you can get an idea of the story. Unfortunately, I got nothing. :P

 oh wow, I guess I am mistaken. The one I was talking about was a Few Good Ghosts and not My Peoples. Thanks for posting, TPfan! That was a great little reel. I liked the little glove indian with the Peter Pan audio! That was so fun! :)

some of those titles seemed interesting...I hope they still choose to work on some of them. I think a sequel to TRON would be potentially interesting and the long-rumored "search for mickey" just so we can get him back on the big screen. Although I'd only briefly read that the idea of producing "Aida" as an animated feature was ever talked about, I still think it has potential to be cool too.

They also cancelled 'Chantacleer' which is the same story as Rock-A-Doodle.

And I dunno- i really think Gnomeo & Juliet was a cancelled production as well.

Almost forgot that Fantasia 3 was cancelled too...unless that's back on the storyboard- i believe its still cancelled.

A third "Fantasia" was for quite some time referred to as "Fantasia 2006", so there must have been plans in existence to have it released this year. :(

Whoa wait a minute...did that list say they were planning on making a Harvie Krumpet movie?! Disney, can you think up your own ideas without stealing others okay?! Sheesh!

It has been argued that there are, and can be, only a very small number (nine?) of "basic storylines". So I guess it's no wonder that Disney and Hollywood have reached the point of no more stories to tell...

"A Few Good Ghosts", "Angel and Her No Good Sister", and "My Peoples" were all working titles for the same movie. I've seen that animation reel before- it's in my favorites on my Internet Explorer. It was to be about toys. Like, homemade-y, old toys. With bluegrass music. I used to go to www.animated-movies.com (which you can still access through http://www.archive.org) (the site now is different from how it used to be, so going through archive.org, you can see the site from a few years ago, in all its glory...but not all the links work, so you have to go through different dates on archive.org- you'll see), which had listings for completed and uncompleted movies. Great site, full of info.

A Few Good Ghosts?! Ha, that sounds like a PIXAR film to me, for some reason. Would have liked to have seen it though!

I was disappointed about Dumbo 2 getting canceled, but not after I heard it was going to be changed to CGI. They had a lot of ideas listed. I'm always up for the sequels in the hopes that they might be good. Sure, it's terrible when one stinks, but I love it when they're good, and I seem to have liked more than most folks.

I'd love to have seen that Search for Mickey movie, though it brings to mind two previous TV programs. There was an episode of Bonkers where he has to find a kidnapped Mickey, and there was Mickey's 60th Birthday, where everyone (including Roger Rabbit) was trying to find him because he had been put under a spell so that no one could recognize him. It would have been cool to see something new done with Basil and Dawson though! The Great Mouse Detective is perfect for sequels, yet probably will never get any since it's not one of the more popular films. I always loved it though, and I have the whole beanie set and the dog Toby too, ha. I wish they would make more films with Mickey and the gang, with some of the less seen characters popping up as well, like Donald's relatives and even Morty and Ferdie! They shouldn't all be House of Mouse style, like "The Search for Mickey" sort of would have been (by including Disney characters from various films), but it would be cool to have a few like that, as I love the crossover concept (House of Mouse was sooo cool to me!). But, it would be a cool thing they could do with direct to video, as one of the best direct to video releases was Mickey's Three Musketeers!

I don't think that a TPII would ever exist (be in ever the pre-production stage) because of TP, unfortunately, being one of the biggest "box-office bombs" ever.

I'm sure there was likely a TP2 on the drawing board as a direct-to-video title. After all, the original film went out of print for awhile back in 2005, only to go back in print. Perhaps they pulled it in order to re-release it with a sequel, which was canceled later on, so they simply put it back on the market since it's a pretty good disc (though I would have loved one longform documentary rather than segmented pieces of one).

Would have made a great, Star Wars-like animated series.
