Bravo is a cable channel, which specializes in "arts" programming, with a heavy bend towards movies.

Saw this list elsewhere earlier today and the response there was scathing. While I won't go AFI and pretend that films stopped being good/great/funny/moving/inspiring in the early 1970s, I will say this list is kind of lame. I mean <i>Shrek</i> being the third-funniest film of all-time? Uh-huh. But once you grant them that, nothing seems too surprising. Looks like nearly all of the movies are from the last 30 years, though, and are not arranged in a very logical or rational order. There are surely a lot of good-to-great films there and ones that won't get recognized in other lists of critical acclaim. The inclusions of <i>Happy Gilmore</i> and <i>Anchorman</i> are commendable, for instance. But yeah, comedy is subjective and very prone to aging/trends, so no list is ever going to please anybody, and this list isn't much more unsatisfying than AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs canon.

I like most of the movies they chose, but really...<i>Shrek</i>? <i>The Wedding Singer</i><b>*</b>? An abundance of self-aware pop-culture references does not a comedy make.

I have to say, none of their top ten would be anywhere near my top 30.

In fact, my guaranteed 10 Ten Movie of All Time (funny or otherwise) is down at #28 - Annie Hall. Spinal Tap would be in my top 10 comedies, and it is only 64 on that list (I'd imagine it would be higher on many lists).


As much as I love Stripes, there is no way it is funnier (objectively) than 82 other films on that list. It was a childhood favourite, but a recent viewing bumped it down in my estimate.

The fact that Anchorman is at 100 says it all really.

That list doesn't really sit right with me. Shrek the third funniest movie of all time?????? And I have searched the list many times and have yet to have spotted SPACEBALLS, which I think is the funniest movie I have ever seen. Bravo, you need some better advice.

Their whole top 4 is a complete joke! And a not funny one. Subjective or not, those are 4 of the most overrated movies of all time, let alone overbloated comedies!

Where the hell are any of the Marx Brothers comedies? I adored those movies when I was a kid - A Day at the Races, Animal Crackers, and the one at the Opera especially.

What a terrible list...

Three of the greatest comedies of all time(The Pink Panther Strikes Again, A Shot in the Dark, Who Framed Roger Rabbit) didn't even make the list!

And with the exception of Airplane, I agree with Loomis not one of the top 10 would make it anywhere near the top of my list(though there's 3 I haven't seen yet). I mean I enjoy South Park, Ace Ventura and Caddyshack(though I probably wouldn't if Bill Murray wasn't shooting gophers in that film) but they wouldn't get anywhere near my top 50 list.

A lot of nitpicks with the list, so I won't go on, but how is The Incredibles a comedy? I found it more action/adventure than comedy. Monster's Inc. or Toy Story should've been instead if they wanted a comedy from Pixar.

EDIT: Just looked at AFI's list again. While not perfect, I much prefer that list over this list.

While I'm very pleased to see Sister Act make the list, I'm with everyone else in thinking it's rubbish. This list has a good number of movies that I would describe as "funny," but nowhere close to "funniest." It's almost like they listed the first 100 recently viewed comedies that came to mind and then ranked them according to popularity. I like how <i>The Nutty Professor</i> is specified as the Eddie Murphy verson (:roll:) but then <i>The Producers</i> isn't labeled by year.

I know. I mean it's a testament to the quality of the Marx brothers work that it was able to make me, a child of the 1990's, laugh as hard as those films did. But it never failed, those films are hilarious, they stand the test of time, and for Bravo not to mention them is stupid. Though after actually watching the show, they went and rushed through mentions of half or more of those movies in the first place - showing no clips and not even getting interviews or comments / opinions of any of the guests. Just a few photos and a plot speed-through. Thank God that's not the approach Bravo took to their 100 Scariest Movie Moments - they showed clips and got comments on all of those movies. Even though they missed too many real great scary movies (I'm still upset that they prefered Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to Arachnophobia - that movie had everyone in the audience jumping in their seats and covering their eyes at some point!!!). Bravo is starting to leave me scratching my head more often than I'm finding them brilliant. We should just look at this whole thing and say, "consider the source." This is the same network that thought Jennifer Lopez and Martin Laurence made great guests on Inside the Actors Studio.

I haven't seen Police Academy in a long time. But when I rented it for the first time, I absolutely hated it. I loved the sequels though, each and every rancid one of them! So, I completely agree with you. Also about There's Something About Mary. That is one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen in my life. People just always want to say gross movies are funny, they know they're all stupid, so they try to find one that's a little more classy than most of the others and say - here's one that's pure genius. Yeah, sure. Sperm as hairgel, groins/crotches getting stuck in zippers, and electrifying the nipples of unconscious dogs is genius! Sorry - ain't no way.

I was very disappointed also in the lack of Marx Brothers movies, but what about some of the funnier movies from Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, and they even ignored films from the Ma & Pa Kettle era, and the Francis the Talking Mule era. Was it because these were all black and white and the only movies they recognized were in color? hmmmmmmmmm, shows that their could be a bias here!!!!
