Next up on the Disney animated televison platter of greatest hits: Talespin!

I've avidly mentioned this show here and there around these boards over time. Another series (besides the aforementioned Darkwing Duck) that I'm really wanting to come on DVD soon. Another great show that introduced me to the world of Disney.

I have to say, this is probably, besides maybe Kim Possible, Disney's best action adventure series of toons. The stories and plots surprisingly didn't fly over my head the way Ducktales did (well for me when I was little). And I have truly have to say, Don Karnage should be up there among the heirarchy of Disney villians. 8)

I own one VHS tape, and that's Fearless Flyers, simply for the reasons of seeing Karnage.

This is one of of my all-time favourites and is right up there with 'DuckTales' and 'Gummi Bears' beating out 'The Wuzzles' and 'Goof Troop' by a bit.

I remember watching this show when I was in public school during lunch and in the afternoon.

Sadly I don't think I have seen it on TV in a long, long, long time so I would love to see it on DVD before the Gummi Bears since maybe two years ago that was on TV but I haven't visted the world of Tale Spin since 1997 I believe. :(

Sadly, I am not sure we will see this show on DVD because of Disney having to change King Louies name to King Larry. That would be a lot of work going through and changing the animation and voices to transform Louie into Larry.

Why's that?

Also, I'd love to see this show come out on DVD very soon! The late 80s to 2001 Disney TV cartoons were the best! :D

I don't think Disney is required to go back and change existing material. The change was made for <i>Jungle Book 2</i> and newly-produced films so as not to have to pay royalties. When <i>The Jungle Book</i> is re-released to DVD in 2007, it's not going to have the character's name changed.

But Louie's name wasn't changed in Jungle Book 2 was it? He never appeared but I'm sure he was still a Louie!

No, right, he didn't appear. Didn't a brother (or some relation) named "Larry" appear or get mentioned though? I seriously don't remember.

Ok, what's the history around the name change? Was there a problem with Disney getting the full rights to "The Jungle Book" or something?

It was the House of Mouse episode where his brother King Larry appeared.

But in TJB2 he was called Louie, i checked on the DVD.

Disney based the character of King Louie upon the singer Louie Armstrong. In name as well as character. Basically there was a rights issue, so for a HoM episode when Louie appear, they introduced him as Larry, Louie's brother. I'm not 100% what the precise details are surrounding it, perhaps someone else can fill you in.

Anyways when Tale Spin debut on The Disney Afternoon I was in second grade. What I remember it created a whole new world for "The Jungle Book" with most of the same characters. Has anyone played Tale Spin on NES it was hard without the Genie (cheat codes)!!!!
Tale Spin was really a favorite just behind Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck.
I remember going to Disneyland in 1990 when Disney was advertising for The Disney Afternoon.... :D
Hopefully it will end up on DVD soon.

Yeah, Larry was a HOM character. He wasn't renamed from the original.

LOL MMP, I own the Talespin Gameboy game, and while I never played the NES version, this one was kind of challenging. :)

The Disney Afternoon was awesome.
This show was one of my favorites, right behind Ducktales and the Rescue Rangers. I liked the love/hate relationship of Baloo and Becky. I would definitely pick this one up, if it ever appears on dvd.

They didnt change his name....

They mentioned Louie in the 2nd film.

King Larry (Louies twin brother made for the show) was on House of Mouse but i dont recall any mention of changing his name to Larry.....

I always liked Jungle Book(a child-hood memory! :D ) so I liked this as well.

Like all the DA shows, this had a catchy theme song! :D

They sometimes occasionaly show it on Toon Disney which I unfortunately don't have.

The plots were fun yet usually had good morals, I'd definatly would pick this up if it was released and if the price was right.

Actually this is what I found from IMDB, "The character of King Louie from the original Jungle Book film is not in this movie, because Disney would have had to pay the estate of voice actor Louis Prima had the character appeared in the film in any form".

So apparently it wasn't Louie Armstrong, but the voice actor of King Louie, Louie Prima.

I think Disney's should've just payed and kept KL in JB2 because he's like the coolest character in The Jungle Book! C'mon Disney could've at least thought of a better reason than saying, "oh he's gone now" and not actually explain what happened to him! :roll:

I just went to TVShowsOnDVD.com and in the TV on DVD news section on the front page, y'all will find the box art for DuckTales and Rescue Rangers.. It's not a "Disney Afternoon Collection" like I thought I predicted, but still, very nice! I mean, there isn't a whole lot of detail on them, but still, one who looks for DVDs and misses these old shows at the same time will be very impressed! :)

Someone beat me to the Louie Prima mention.

I think for new material they'd have to pay but for old material i dont think its a problem.

This is a show that grew on me as i got older. I liked it when i was younger, but it wasn't till i got older that i actually appreciated the concept or "world" they created.

Kind of a futuristic past (see Batman TAS or Ducktales for examples like this) and I came to like it much more.

Wow, I learn something new everyday, although Louie did have the appeal Louis Armstrong did in a way. 8)

Yeah, as I got older, I too discovered how intricate and complex Cape Suzette was. A harbor town with giant cliffs protecting it was a perfect setting.
