I paid $14.87, give or take a few cents, at Wal-Mart on release day for the Platinum Edition sans gift set. I'd really like to get the gifit set at some point later this year (Decemberish) when DVD things cool down a bit and I have more dispensable money, so a double dip on this title is possible in my future but it's really up in the air at this point depending on what else I want, and what I hear about the gift set vs. standard release on this board and others.
If I did buy the gift set, I would obviously open and use the gift set materials but I would take out the sealed duplicate DVD and keep it sealed to do something with later on: gift giving, trading, ebay, or donating it to the library, etc. I'd then replace its place in the box with the current standard copy that I have right now, seeing as I got it first and I intend to use it forever until (if/when) another reissue comes.
I also got mine free from the Kroger Circle of Saving program...plus they gave me a 6 pack of bottled water, a 10 pack of Hi-C juice pouches, and a box of microwave popcorn for free (there was also supposed to be a book but they were out of them). PLUS the kid ringing it up didn't notice that those extra items came off the bill automatically, and neither did I, so I asked about it - he called the office and they told him to ring up them up as rain checks and I got an extra $6.75 off my total bill. Not a bad deal...
$19.99 + $5.00 for Sleeping Beauty + $3.xx for ridiculously high state tax - $5.00 for VHS upgrade - 2/3 of a free Hunchback DVD through the B3G1 Free deal. I don't know, I guess it will technically be $22 for TLK and SB both total after the VHS upgrade rebate. I don't love any Disney film like I do Lion King, but the Gift Set was just universally overpriced by stores. Amazon had a nice price for a while, but they too raised it.

You knew what you were getting, and you bought both sets? Why did you buy the stand alone DVD in addition to the box set which comes with the smae dvd? Seems strange for someone who has had nothing good to say aobut hte DVD.

My brother paid $29.99 USD for the Special Edition DVD with four free lithographs, two plush toys and a collectible pin. I think shipping was an extra $6.95 USD.
Through 3 discounts and a bit of luck, I got the Gift Set down to $28 flat off of Amazon.
*does the $28 dance*
Kinda glad I didn't pay a cent more - what a craptacular set. Just as fluffy and insubstantial as anything found on the disc itself.
Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."
