John Lasseter article: The Man Who Could Save Animation

Post by Wonderlicious »

This is an Entertainment Weekly article posted on Animated News. As I seem to believe that some of us here (myself not included) have grown to hate Pixar, what does everyone think of this article? It obviously has a pro-Lasseter bias, so what do you think about it?

I personally liked the article, even if it was a fluffy piece with a "let's have some faith for Diz-nee due to Johnny" atmosphere being present. I seem to fall inbetween the "Disney sucks now" and "Disney rocks now" categories, so for a portion of the article, I agreed with it.

Naturally, an article for a national mag such as EW is going to be written more towards the crowd that isn't as Disney-fluent as people here, so I think that at least in part explains the "rah rah rah" vibes. I'm guessing quite a few people out there are still scratching their heads over the whole Disney-Pixar deal, and wondering who in the world this Lasseter guy is, so perhaps the author felt some bio information was needed.

Then, of course, there's the tendency of Entertainment Weekly to pay more attention to what's "hot" rather than just what's "good," thus they don't really credit Chicken Little as a success primarily because it didn't create quite the buzz it was expected to.

I'm not a huge fan of EW in general...however, I'm gald that they decided to write an article on Lasseter because, even if you now hate Pixar with all your soul, you can't really hate that guy. He obviously loves animation and wants to see some more great films be made, what's really so wrong about that?
Oh, I'm sorry, you're all standing...here, let me make you a chair!

I might read that article later? Why exactly are people hating Pixar now, is it because they are whipping Disney Feature Animation in line, by telling them to rework Meet the Robinsons and drop Gnomeo and Juiliet? Those are good decisions if you ask me.

This confirms the rumors about Prince Eric being a spy for Entertainment Weekly TRUE! :P

Okay seriously, I haven't read the entire article yet(read 2 pages though) and from the looks of it, they're just saying Lasseter has a loving passion for animation. I am very well aware of that though, and I do have some respect for Pixar actually as opposed to Dreamworks(PDI or Dreamworks Animation) or Blue Sky and I also appreaciate Lasseter himself.

HOWEVER, I noticed the headline says, "The Man that Could Save Animation". Ummm, what part of animation actually needs to be saved? Animation has been doing very well(in general) over the years.

Once again, this is another way of saying, "Disney has lost the magic". I still think Disney is the more original company and have much more original ideas than the buddy comedy writers that are Pixar. I have also been more entertained with films like "Treasure Planet" and "Brother Bear" than I have with films like "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles". I'm also anticipating the upcoming, "Meet the Robinsons" MUCH more than Cars or any of the upcoming Pixar films for that matter..

While some good things can come out of this deal, there are A LOT of problems that are going to occur as I now see, and I think this is going to lead to problems for BOTH companies.

I just don't think Disney/Pixar fans will be happy with this as they were expecting. I mean, audiences don't know WHAT they want right?

Some people hate today's Disney and say they prefer Pixar. Disney defenders then start to defend Disney by dissing Pixar.
