Lion King DVD is worth it

Post by rnrlesnar »

Sure the extras aren't all that great and we don't get the "original" theatrical release, but play your old Lion King vhs side by side with the DVD and the DVD would be worth it even if it was just the movie alone. The movie looks awful on vhs compared to DVD. The two second crocodile scene does not take away from what is an absolutely gorgeous presentation of the movie.

Uh, it's much more than a 2-second crocodile scene that's been changed...and I don't think anyone has complained about the audio/video quality. Of course, this presupposes that everybody's watched the actual movie...which I must confess, I haven't.

Not sure why this couldn't have gone in one of the dozen existing Lion King threads anyway, but nonetheless, they could have given us a nice-looking video and audio several years ago. And then it would have been the real theatrical cut.

If you're just going by "Compare it side-by-side to the VHS", then by that standard 99.9% of DVDs "are worth it."

Luke, I think rnrlesnar's just sick of all the complaining being done about the dvd. He's just pointing out to everyone that it's quite a respectable dvd, just not the greatest of all time. To this I'll completely agree.

Well it said right on the package 'The King of All DVDs' ... that's misleading advertisement.

And so is saying that it contains the original theatrical cut, but hey, that's Disney for you. :P

The crocodile scene is the only major alteration in my opinion. What's wrong with the touched up water falls? I think they add to the quality of the animation. They took out the "SFX" or "SEX" in the grass seeds. Big deal, it wasn't that noticeable to begin with.

The Lion king is probably my favorte Disney movie, so it was going to take a pitiful DVD to ruin it for me. I haven't gone through many of the extras, but I did watch the feature on the Broadway show and thought that was a nice addition, since I'm going to it next year and didn't really have a good idea of what it was going to be like.

Watching it on DVD in its digital form, altered or not, made the DVD worth every penny. I just don't see how this DVD has ruined the movie for anyone.

I LOVE The Lion King. I think it's one of the best Disney movies out there. I am not to sure if it's "THE KING OF ALL DVDS". But for the time being, in my opinion I think it is.

I don't think anyone said that either.

What I've been saying (and others too) is that I'm entirely underwhelmed by the features that are mostly promotional and barely skim the surface. The changes made to the theatrical cut don't make a great deal of difference, but it's still bothersome that they couldn't even deliver what they promise.

And I'm going to put together a page of all the stuff that's been changed, and you'll see that it's more than just the crocodiles. :)

I like the Lion King dvd, but I think out of the Platinums so far, it comes out last. I HATE Morning Report!!!!!! I don't really like the fact that they changed the crocs, and the continents are so weird to navigate. On the other hand, SEX is still there, just not as much, and I really like the new colors.

rnrlesnar is a agent paid by BVHE to make us think that the Lion King is actually the king of all DVDs and that the Special Edition is superior than the original theatrical!

Ok, please explain how the Special Edition with the morning part taken out isn't superior to the original, or what really makes them that much different? You do know that you can watch it without the morning report, do you? To me, it's the same darn movie!

first of all the crocodiles look like disney stole them from a Goodtimes DVD, the original opening is not there, the colors are too bright making it to kiddie feature, the SFX is gone it was nice to make it look like it said SEX  the animation looks so touched up it has lost it's magic. I do like the touched up animation but I rather have the Original Theatrical without the changes and touch ups. as for the Morning Report it was a waste of money they could have used to put better features on Disc 2!

I bought the Lion King. I love the visuals on the original theatrical. HOWEVER, I think the features were watered down too much. Why wasnt there any interviews by the other voice actors? (James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Guillame etc) I mean was it too expensive for Disney to ask them to be on it? Also the features were not organized well, I had a hard time figuring out what was were. (on the Snow White Platinum dvd they have an index to tell you what info is on the disc). Why no trailers? the other movies had it. Also Morning Report should have just been put into a "Deleted Scenes" section. It was too short to try to make it seem like a special edition there was no need for it. And the annoying layer change that happens after the scene is over (freeze) will ensure that I'll watch only the original from now on. Enough of my griping, just wanted to express my view. I did love the audio/video on the dvd though. Stupendous.
Return of the King is coming, are you ready?

Well, I agree with you, rnlesnar, that it is essentially the same darn movie. But I think the very nature of "Special Edition" changes would require Disney (or in this case, you) to defend the changes and explain how they improve the film.

How does "The Morning Report" enhance the film in any way, for instance? And the various little changes throughout...what purpose do they serve?

I don't really expect an answer from you (or Disney), but I'm just wondering why the IMAX cut is "superior" to the movie that was such a hit 8-9 years ago in theaters and on video.

Does anyone else think that the whole Digital to Digital transfer takes away warmth from the film? I watched it and most of the time I was so distracted by how clean and bold everything looked. I think the whole softness of film gives a lot to the movie, but of course this is the IMAX version and I guess that's whats expected. If it was the original I don't think it would be that jarring. The same can be said for Beauty and the Beast.

Never did I say the IMAX was superior. Someone else said the original was superior. To me, they're basically the same and to say one is actually superior to the other is without merit. If the presentation of the movie itself is so disappointing, watch your truly "inferior" VHS.

Not at all. That "warmth" is caused by inferior video technology. I would think that the digital transfer represents what the actual animation cells look like and the way they were intended to be viewed.

Well seeing as their were no actual cells made.. You're getting it str8 from the computer.. and not from the film.. There's nothing wrong with that but I'm just saying the IMAX version is too cleaned up. I'm sure if they were to make a digital to digital from the CAPS information of the original theatrical release it would not be as jarring.
