What Movies or TV shows do you want to get a DVD release?
Your outstanding DVD "Holy Grails"
Well, 2006 is a good year for DVD. Most of the archive films are out, TV series are coming thick and fast, and new films are guarenteed a release 3-6 months after their cinematic release.
Plus, in the UK there's been releases of shows I never thought would be released... A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Alexi Sayle's Stuff, Reeves and Mortimer... It seems we're spoilt for choice.
But what DVDs do you want, but are still not released? Here's some on my list:
Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics: We're getting good steady releases of the Scooby Doo releases but the crossover series Laff-A-Lympics should be next. Hopefully, the vast number of cartoon characters and cameos won't result in rights issues (But I believe Babu may cause a problem based on the New Scooby Doo Movies release, where his episode was not cleared due to rights issues with Jeannie... it depends if the Babu character has joint ownership). I'm also desperate for Scooby and Scrappy Doo - I have no problems with Scrappy until all until they decided to remove Freddy and Velma from Mystery Inc.
Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels: Come on Warners. Captain Caveman. Do it for Taffy-Waffy (and Netty-Wetty).
A Very Peculiar Practice S2 - S2 came out on DVD over 2 years ago and was as brilliant as I remember it. S2 was twice - no make that three times... No! In fact, lets go the whole hog and say five times -better.
Big Night Out... Live: It's well known that the Big Night Out One Off Reunion Special performed to promote the DVD release of Vic Reeves Big Night Out was recorded for a later release on DVD. Where is it? Rumours are the New Year's Night Out special and the original Big Night Out Live recording will be included making a 2 disc set.
Tremors: The Series: The films are still a big success, and DTV titles are still being made (the grapevine is talking of a further Tremors DTV being considered) So what possible reason could Universal have for not releasing the TV series?
Parker Lewis Can't Loose: I loved this, loved it. It was like a live action cartoon, and out Malcolms Malcolm in the Middle. I'd love to see this again, just to see Dr. "Death" Pankow again. "Synchronize Swatches!"
House of Mouse: Hey, does anymore need to be said. Undoubtably the best Disney animated series ever made, able to appeal to all ages.
Yes, they're all TV series. But like I said, most films are out by now, or coming out soon (Shock Treatment was on my list, but that's coming out in May).

Here's some of mine:
Mama's Family (TV Series) - Come on, Warner! This show is now up to #8 (#6, actually) on the most wanted TV series!
Family Matters (TV Series) - I'm suprised this one isn't out yet. If they can release Full House, Growing Pains and Fresh Prince, they can release Family Matters.
Falcon Crest (TV Series) - Hopefully this show isn't too far behind. There's a rumor that it will be released for the 25th Anniversary in December 2006.
Matlock (TV Series) - They have released Murder, She Wrote and Columbo. Paramount is just slow with TV on DVD releases.
Not to many movies but I would like to see Chance of a Lifetime come out on DVD. It starred Leslie Nielsen and Betty White.

Other than the rest of the classic Disney Afternoon shows on season sets (Talespin and the rest of Rescue Rangers and Ducktales especially), one TV show that I'm pining for on DVD is WKRP in Cincinnatti. This show's only hangup for DVD release is the fact that the original episodes contained numerous classic rock songs, and negotiating the rights to release the episodes in their original, unedited forms (as opposed to the altered versions run on the former TNN a few years ago) has thus far been a nightmare and a HUGE barrier to getting this excellent show on DVD. And all you Disney TV fans think you've got it rough with your 3 episode Goof Troop and Quack Pack DVDs
My hope is that one day, the music companies just give up and let WKRP (plus The Wonder Years, another unreleased show with music rights issues) be released onto DVD without editing. I'm not holding my breath, though

Most Wanted
These need to be released!
1. The Wonder Years- If the music was allowed to be put in the shows orignally, the show should always have the rights. The music is what MADE the show (I even made cd's of the show's music- there's a great website that lists the songs from each episode). If it comes out without the music, I'm not buying!
2. Now and Again- This show was VERY prematurely cancelled. The Sci-Fi/ Action series starring Eric Close had only one season in 99-2000, but it was a great show. I wish they would release that one season, I would certainly buy it. If they'll release the only season of My Big Fat Greek Life or whatever it was called, they could release this!
3. Beverly Hills 90210- I grew up with this show and I loved it till the end!
4. Child of Glass- Although a made-for-tv effort, it was still an excellent movie.
5. The Spirit is Willing- This was a William Castle film of the 60's about the sex lives of ghosts (hilarious). I have a dvd "copy" but the quality is not great. I'd love a factory release!
6. Blossom- I loved this series, for Joey Lawrence!
7. Paternity- This was an 80's Burt Reynolds film about a bachelor who wants to have a child without getting married, so he hires a surrogate mother (Beverly D'Angelo from the National Lampoon movies) to have his child for him. It's a cute film!

Re: Most Wanted
Some slightly good news. Anchor Bay originally had the distribution rights, but eventually those rights went to Viacom and Paramount. But before they did, AB was able to release just the pilot episode on DVD. However, with Viacom and Paramount now acquiring the distribution rights (along with many other Spelling shows), a DVD release is likely within the next couple years, along with Melrose Place (which I preferred), and hopefully the MP spin-off, Models Inc.DisneyPrincess wrote: 3. Beverly Hills 90210- I grew up with this show and I loved it till the end!
Same thing happened with Dynasty. 20CF had the distribution rights and put out Season One, but low sales kept them from releasing further seasons. With the distrib. rights going to Viacom and Paramount now, more releases are likely.
Adding to the growing list of Holy Grails...
Family Ties - 1982-1989? Why the hell aren't the Keatons released on DVD yet???
LA Law - 1986-1994. I loved this show. Rose Nylund used to call it "Lalaw", bwahaha.
Beauty and the Beast - 1987-1990. The first season (plus the third season premiere) was released on VHS, but I'd love to see the entire series released on DVD. It was about a woman, Catherine, who was mugged and beaten, and a "beast" of sorts, named Vincent, took her underground (where there's a whole underground community) to nurse her to health. The two became friends, and by the end of the second season, lovers. The third season, unfortunately, was the last because it *sucked*. They killed Catherine (after she gave birth to Vincent's child), and introduced a new female lead who I never cared for.
Power Rangers in Space - The only PR series (I think it was 98-99) I'd willingly buy on DVD. Mainly because it kicked ass and was the best.
The Lot - A 4-part very-mini-series on AMC in 1999, it became a somewhat regular show in 2000 or 2001, I never remember when, but I always tried to catch it whenever I could. People complained that this show replaced the superior Remember WENN, but since I had never seen Remember WENN, I can't complain.
Jake 2.0 - It came on after Enterprise during the 2003-2004 season, and unfortunately, was replaced by America's Next Top Model (kill me now). I always love those quirky sci-fi shows, and this one had a regular guy, Jake, get infested by nanites, these weird computer things, that turned him practically into a living computer. It got pulled midseason, dammit, before we got to see the episode with the ninjas.
8 Simple Rules - Thanks to Daytime WB, I've seen the entire series about 3 times now since January, because they do 2 eppies a day Monday-Friday at 4. But I wanna see Disney release this on DVD.
ETA:
How could I forget a couple other shows???
Doug - This show was da shiznit! Classic oldschool Nickelodeon! Put it on DVD now, you bastards! Who gives a rat's ass about a sponge? Give us Doug Funnie!

Re: Most Wanted
I'm not 100% sure just how music rights work, but I think that at the time that shows like The Wonder Years, WKRP, etc. were first run, rights for music on each episode's original runs was the only thing that was negotiated, not rights in the case of video releases (DVD rights weren't even on the horizon yet), or even in the case of syndication on other networks. An interesting (and unfortunate) thing about the syndicated episodes of WKRP is that the original music has been cut and blander, almost Muzak-quality tracks have replaced it. So I think that for every time the studios that create a given TV show/movie with non-public domain music want to make their work available in some other medium, they have to re-negotiate the music rights.DisneyPrincess wrote:These need to be released!

20 or 30 years ago, this may not have been such a big deal to work out. But with the advent of digital music piracy coupled with the explosion in the home video market, music companies are probably more wary about selling rights to their material than they were in the past.

With music on TV shows, there's a licensing difference between the broadcast rights (first-run on network), syndication rights, and the distribution rights (home video, DVD, etc.). IIRC, broadcast rights are cheaper because it's only expected to be used a few times (first run, and network reruns). Music is usually replaced in syndication because it's cheaper to use other music than having to constantly pay for the music every time an episode was repeated (and given how many local or cable stations run a show ad nauseum, that would be a hefty music bill).
Distribution rights are similar to syndication rights. Because it's an ownership of a show now, the music will cost a lot, because mainly, you're paying once for something you can watch over and over again. How many times will a music artist get paid for a one song of his they used in an episode of "Dawson's Creek" that gets replayed on DVD by some fervant fan 3 times a day? Which is why several shows opt to change the music (namely any show on WB that had a lot of music).
Some shows make an effort to make sure the original music is included in the DVDs (Moonlighting, the first season of Northern Exposure, etc.), while others take the cheaper way out (Las Vegas retains all the music, but replaces the theme song, "A Little Less Conversation", with the international version because it's cheaper).

Who's The Boss?-I can't believe that they released only ONE season, and stopped. I would LOVE for them to release every season. I love this show to death, and it sucks that it's on Nick-at-Nite, but, they only play it at 3:30 a.m, central. Does anyone know if they plan to release the rest of the series?

My mom used to watch that when I was little and then when I heard Disney was going to make a Beauty and the Beast movie, I always sort of thought it was going to be a cartoon version of that. I got confused a lot. I still do, actually.Escapay wrote:Beauty and the Beast - 1987-1990. Even Stevens - I love this show, and it's barely on anymore (pretty much only at 10:30, if its a good day) and when this show is completely gone, I will miss it terribly. I got the movie, which is great, but that's only a little sample of what we need. C'mon Disney, let's go!
Courage the Cowardly Dog - This show strongly appeals to the twisted/Tim Burton-esqu side of me. I've been lucky enough to watch it on demand recently, but a DVD would be much appreciated
Don't Look Under the Bed - Disney Channel's Halloween-based films seem to be very popular, so I have some hope for this, bit we'll see.
I Love the 70's 80's and 90's - Just plain fun to watch. I could watch them over and over again.
8 Simple Rules - This show may have gone out the window after Ritter died, but while he was there, it was genuinely funny (at least I think).

It is interesting. Many shows I was hanging out for have been released in the last few years, with mixed reception. Magnum, P.I. I still love, and am glad to see the boxes are still coming out. However, some highly anticipated animated series - Voltron, for example - just failed to impress. Indeed, it was incredibly dodgy. That is why I'm hesitant to put a former 'grail' - M.A.S.K - on this list.
Star Trek - The Animated Series: All the other Star Trek series are now out on DVD, and this is the only one we are waiting on. Rumours abound, but nothing concrete.
Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (aka 2 Guys and a Girl): With the rise of both Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion to big-screen stardom, I'm surprised this one hasn't had a DVD release. Far more innovative than your average sitcom, especially those Halloween specials, this show was just lots of fun. The first two series had David Odgen Stiers as a regular character. That alone should merit this a Super Deluxe Special Edition with The Works.
Various Disney series: Naturally, I'd be keen to see Lilo & Stitch; House of Mouse and a few other series out on DVD. I'll buy anything they put out, so I'm easy.
Other (kinda):
Justice League Unlimited: I know this one will definitely come out in boxes eventually, and is already available in single volumes. However, as there are a few Green Arrow/Black Canary episodes throughout the various seasons, I'd love to have them all collected together in season boxes eventually.

Columbia (now Sony) is horrible at releasing TV shows. I'm still waiting for Mad About You: Season 3 (It's been 3 years!), Just Shoot Me!: Season 3, The Larry Sanders Show: Season 2, etc.MadonnasManOne wrote:Who's The Boss?-I can't believe that they released only ONE season, and stopped. The Phantom Tollbooth - This movie came into my mind when I was reading this thread. That film hasn't been released on DVD for a long time and I hope MGM/Sony will release it sooner. It's one of my favorite animated films!
I guess that's much about it.

I hope now that shows are being released on dvd sooner, that they will take this into consideration as to how much "outside music" they use in their shows. I guess if the music industry is going to continue to be so greedy, maybe the shows shouldn't use artist's music and give them publicity. Shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 had lots of bands and music and even released soundtracks. I suppose they will run into the same problem that Wonder Years is? The lack of "real" music from the series will definitely affect people like me from buying the series on dvd, especially The Wonder Years. I really don't see how they could substitute anything in place of songs from the original artists, especially the theme song by Joe Cocker. I mean, how do you replace The Beach Boys, Aaron Neville, Nat King Cole, Steppenwolf or Jimi Hendrix? I'm anxious to see what happens. Thank goodness I do have the first season and the Christmas episodes on tape I can watch!Escapay wrote:

I guess nobody bothered putting this down as it's something we truly all pine for, but I'll say it again; it does deserve a public release, especially in North America, where you guys have never seen the film legally since 1986 and they deserve to see it again no matter what.

Anyone remember this? You might possibly do, and I think that it deserves a release on DVD, though I doubt it as it's not exactly marketable a la The Lion King or Cinderella.

Animaniacs is out soon, so hopefully this will follow. I hope they'll release How I Spent my Vacation as one big special like how it was released on video.
Various Documentaries/Specials
There are probably about 100 specials or documentaries that I wish I'd taped, as I really want to see them again.
There's also a few things that I'd like to see in season sets or 13-30 episode volumes which are only available in a "one long episode" edition or a silly 4 episode collection currently, in particular Smack the Pony, Rugrats and House of Mouse.
I guess nobody bothered putting this down as it's something we truly all pine for, but I'll say it again; it does deserve a public release, especially in North America, where you guys have never seen the film legally since 1986 and they deserve to see it again no matter what.

Dang it! I've always forgot about SOTS! Oh well, that'll make it as "#2" of most-wanted DVDs-but-not-released after "The Phantom Tollbooth".Wonderlicious wrote:Song of the South

I used to watch that show all the time, but I don't think It has a chance if Disney still hasn't released more popular shows.Wonderlicious wrote: Pepper Ann

Most of the TV shows I want are not on DVD yet. Basically, out of my favorites list on tvshowsondvd . com, only 5 of my show selections are on DVD (Count Duckula, Roseanne, The Nanny, Wings, and coming soon - Animaniacs). Which was good, actually, because I'm sure it saved me a lot of money back when I had it. But now it looks like my favorite shows will never see a DVD release. (in season sets only)

Holy Grails
1) The Complete Tex Avery - MGM classic stuff. The funniest stuff ever.
2) The Warners Eleven!!! - Black Coal And The Seven Dwarfs included.
3) Betty Boop on a reputable release not the $2/PD bin. Republic did a laserdisc on these. Up the silent Felix The Cat and Popeye here as well.
4) Double Idemnity - Even if Universal craps this one out, it still worth owning as the single best example of classic film noir.
5) Uncut Jackie Chan Hong Kong movies with the Cantonese soundtrack. The US release are screwed up especially when they cut out the closing credit outtakes. Bruce Lee as well here.
6) Most of Laurel And Hardy sound stuff and of course Hats Off which is really a Holy Grail to L&H fans.
7) A decent reputable release of Chaplin's Keystone. Not great stuff but it would be nice to a genius in training.
