French Titles - PROBLEM!!!

Post by edsouth »

I have a feeling that this problem is just my horrible DVD player, but the last two Disney titles that I've watched (Lady and the Tramp, and Donald & Daisy) every time there is writting in the movie....credits, signs, store fronts, letters......I get the French Translation at the bottom of my screen!!! I don't get it!!????

Donald & Daisy doesn't even have French subtitles as an option, so I don't know how the titles show up on my screen.

I've gone into the DVD player's menu and turned off everything I could and double checked that everything is set to English. When I push "subtitle" on the remote the screen says that it's turned off!!!

I doubt anyone can offer me a suggestion that I haven't tried allready, but I was just wondering if anyone else had this bizzare problem!

I have Lady and the Tramp and there were no subtitles at the bottom of the screen when there were words. My only problem is when I play Howl's Moving Castle, because I also always get subtitles when there is a truck with words on it, or a street sign, or other stuff like that. These subtitles, however, are in English, so..........
Well, since I don't know myself, I guess I don't know why I'm posting. I hope someone here knows how, 'cause it ain't me!

Maybe you have a french canadian encoded disc???

Just guessing. I have the same problem, but usually its English subtitles showing up at random times. I'd rewind to see it again, but it doesnt. I think its just my player acting funky.

If it really bothers you, I guess you can call BVHE and demand a new disc. I dunno if they'll let you have it for free since you usually pay for a disc replacement, but in you case they might make an exception.

This might be your problem. Canadian discs are encoded for Region 1, but they have slightly different packaging from the US releases, some with French and English text. They might also have French subtitles where the US release might not. Unlike the US, Canada is officially bi-lingual, so different rules for DVD releases may apply there.

You should still be able to switch the subtitles off, though. Perhaps try running the DVD on another player, and see if the problem persists.
Oh, I'm sorry, you're all standing...here, let me make you a chair!

What is most likely happening is that your TV is decoding the closed captioning on the DVDs. This is not the same as regular DVD subtitles, and there is no option to turn it on/off in the DVD menu; you will probably have to go into the TV settings and see if there is an option to turn off decoding of closed captions.

When you are getting French or Spanish narratives appearing on your video, it is not the disc, but actually the player. The only discs that you are experiencing this issue with are the one that have another audio track (French or Spanish).

Pretend that you are watching the feature in French as that is the only language you are familiar with. If a sign appears in the background with English writing, a French translation will appear below it. Your player is auto-populating that narrative track even though you are watching the feature in English.

While the feature is playing, scroll through the subtitle options by using the Subtitle button on your remote until "Off" appears on your screen. That will take care of the issue. Try it on a different player and I bet the narratives won't auto-populate.

That happens to me too on some DISNEY DVDs... I just hit the subtile button and they go away. It's never happened on a non-disney DVD though.

Also, you should check the "Default Language" settings of your DVD device. Different models may have some automatic settings for audio and subtitle tracks which should be turned off.

I have had the same problem when I try to watch my Dallas DVDS. Sometimes english subtitles just come up when I don't press on them from the menu. :x
