I'm so glad you asked! :D

I dare say that this is my favorite movie, among both live action AND animation. It's just so breathtakingly gorgeous, with fascinating characters and lots of intense drama and action. I just love it, love it, love it.

Folks, if all you have seen of Miyazaki-san's works is Spirited Away (which I will not deny is a great film in its own right), I implore you to see Princess Mononoke ASAP. THIS is Miyazaki's magnum opus, and the culmination of various themes and beliefs of his going all the way back to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It's not for the little kids, though, I will say that. But more mature fans of animation should enjoy it.

Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite Miyazaki movies. The scenes are fantastic, and the characters, plot, fighting scenes, everything is breath-takingly gorgeous. I really do adore this movie. I have yet to get it on DVD. I wish Disney would put it out, I don't know why though.

Princess Mononoke was released on Miramax R1 DVD before any of the other movies in the Disney/Tokuma deal were by Disney (at the time Kiki's Delivery Service was out on VHS and My Neighbor Totoro out on home video through Fox). As far as I know, this was/is the only movie in the deal that is PG-13, which is why Disney released it under the Miramax banner in theaters and probably why it was a Miramax video release as well.

I'm not sure how Disney would feel about releasing Princess Mononoke on Disney DVD. I mean, I know they try to maintain a reputation of family films, which this is not (at least not for little kids who might like Totoro, etc.), but at the same time it does seem odd that this one sort of gets the shaft. Personally, I'm glad for this to be available on DVD at all, considering how ridiculously squeamish Disney seems to be about Only Yesterday...so, decapitation, albeit not gratuitous, is acceptable but talking about menstruation is not? :?

EDIT: a very nice, comprehensive page about the Disney/Tokuma Shoten deal that brought Studio Ghibli films under the umbrella of BVHE can be found at: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/disney/ (Note: this page has not been updated in a couple of years, but I assume the deal includes rights to future Ghibli releases as well since it was negotiated before Howl's Moving Castle and The Cat Returns were released or possibly even in production)

Actually, nausicaa.net is THE page for all pertinent and interesting information on every Studio Ghibli work, including those which Disney does not own the rights to. I definitely recommend checking it out. 8)
