Why Lion King Special Edition and not Platinum?

Post by thomashton »

Maybe I'm just a dummy but why is Disney promoting this as a Special Edition and not a Platinum Edition? Watch the TV ads, look at the signs in retail stores and everywhere else. It is being advertised as a Special Edition. With so much hype into the Platinum Edititon being the cream of Diseny's crop, why aren't they marketing it as such? :? :x

As far as I can remember they did the same thing with Beauty and the Beast last year. It's probably just so people don't get confused with all the different collection titles. For example last month had Sleeping Beauty being advertised as a Special Edition because that's what it was. If they advertised The Lion King as a Platinum Edition people would probably wonder what the difference between Platinum and Special was and so on. That's just my guess though.

Maybe because it includes the new sequence. Notice that Snow White is 'only' Platinum Edition while Beauty & Beast and The Lion King which both have been re-edited with new scenes are 'Special Platinum Edition'(s).

Anyway, marketing a DVD as a SPECIAL EDITION, rather than a PLATINUM EDITION will attract much more buyers IMO. Why the hell would casual DVD fans know what's a Disney Platinum Edition...

So why the hell have platinum editions in the first place? It was another bad decision by Disney, who change their minds over marketing as often as I change my socks.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

That's what I thought, until Disney added "2-Disc Special Edition" to the cover instead of just "Special Edition". This means that they are not referring to the film as an S.E. because of the extra song - rather they are promoting the DVD as a 2-Disc Special Edition under a Platinum Edition banner.

Yeah, I think Jack and others hit the nail on the head. Disney probably doesn't want to confuse the customers whose intelligence is called into question by Disney quite often.
