BURBANK, Calif., March 3, 2006 – "<b>High School Musical</b>," the contemporary movie musical that has
captivated kids, tweens and families as part of the blockbuster Disney Channel Original Movie franchise,
and is the highest-rated original programming in the history of the network, will debut on Disney DVD,
May 23, 2006. A "break into song" production, the comedic "<b>High School Musical</b>" follows two teens,
Troy and Gabriella, who must learn to believe in themselves and follow their dreams, despite the
polarization of high school cliques. Allowing fans to experience even more, the DVD will include two
versions of the film -- the original telecast version and an exciting sing-along version which displays lyrics
on screen during all musical numbers, so audiences can learn the words of the film’s chart-topping
songs. The debut DVD release also contains bonus features including a “Learn the Dance Moves”
feature led by Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega (XIX Winter Olympics
Opening Ceremony), a never-before-seen music video, “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” the rousing
music video “We’re All In This Together,” and a Behind-The-Scenes feature providing viewers an
exclusive glimpse at the making of the movie. “<b>High School Musical</b>” is available on DVD May 23, 2006,
from Walt Disney Home Entertainment.

"<b>High School Musical</b>" is an entertainment industry sensation. For its premiere telecast, it delivered
record Household ratings for Disney Channel and, against all basic cable television networks, was the #1
movie of the month in Households, Total Viewers and its targeted youth demographics, Kids age 6-14.
For its 6 telecasts thus far (January 20-February 13), 26.3 million unduplicated Total Viewers, 8.4 million
Kids 6-11 and 8.7 million Tweens 9-14 have tuned in.

The "<b>High School Musical</b>" soundtrack from Walt Disney Records also made its mark and within a month
of its release, shipped Gold. The soundtrack remained the #1 selling album on iTunes for three weeks,
and rose to #6 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Two singles, the duet "Breaking Free" and the
rhythmic "Get'cha Head in the Game" (Troy version), are also Gold. "Breaking Free" made the largest
jump in the 48-year history of the Billboard Hot 100, catapulting from #86 to #4 in just one week.
"Get'cha Head in the Game" broke a 34-year record with its biggest jump ever to #23, from #100. Seven
other singles from the soundtrack also debuted on the Hot 100.

"<b>High School Musical</b>" follows a popular high school basketball star and a shy, academically gifted
newcomer who discover they share a secret passion for singing. When they audition for the lead roles in
the school musical, it threatens East High's rigid social order and sends their peers into an uproar. In a
desperate effort to maintain the status quo, the "jocks," the "brainiacs" and even the drama club regulars
hatch plots to separate the pair and keep them offstage. By defying expectations and taking a chance
on their dreams, Troy and Gabriella inspire other students to go public with some surprising hidden
talents of their own. Starring are Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale (Disney Channel's
"The Suite Life of Zack & Cody"), Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel (Disney Channel Original Movie
"<i>Halloweentown High</i>"), Monique Coleman, Bart Johnson, Oleysa Rulin and Alyson Reed.
The movie was written by Peter Barsocchini and directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega and is
Executive Produced by Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush.

I'm rather excited for this release. Looks like a decent DVD, but how about:

*Audio commentary
*Interstitials with the cast that played during its original broadcast (I guess these could be in the making-of, but I doubt it)
*Both music video forms of "Get'cha Head in the Game"
*Music video form of "Breaking Free"... were there any other music videos for the movie?
*DCOM DVD-ROM Feature: Host Your Own High School Musical ;) (Okay, I'm kidding here, but it might be funny)

As far as I know, all of the Disney Channel movies today are framed for both 1.78:1 and 1.33:1. They only air in 1.33:1, which makes the 1.78:1 framing unused until the day that HDTV and 16x9 sets become the norm. That means that 1.33:1 is a valid aspect ratio for the movie, but I think many would like a 1.78:1 version released. They could probably do it on the same DVD without much of a bits crunch.

the IMDb doesn't say anything 'bout 1:1,333, just the 1:1,85 - on the other DCOMS there's nothing.

But why keeping the 4:3 aspect anyway? What's wrong with black bars on the TV?

And, I don't think that when HD had come up, Disney re-releases all Movies on HD-DVD/BlueRay.....

BTW: will HDDVD/Blueray have something like a region code?

The IMDb is operated on user-submitted information. Don't put too much stock into it for technical data.

As for why 4x3 on DVD, well surely there is a portion of the demographic that prefers fullscreen in addition to the sizable chunk that prefers widescreen/OAR. There's also a noteworthy demographic that just doesn't care. Consider them individually and separately and you'll understand why the majority of studios do separate 4x3 and 16x9 releases on new films. Of course, then retailers may not stock the desired version. Those that stock both may have to deal with customer confusion, which is definitely an issue that the studios consider in deciding what movie gets what format.

Generally, the easiest thing for the studios to do is only choose one format and run with it. It's one less SKU, one less product for retailers to order/deal with, one less opportunity to confuse customers and leave them not buying. This is what Disney does for all its major animated classics releases. They also used to regularly do it for new live action films, but it's been a while since any hasn't received dual releases.

I live in Holland so I'm not familair with it. Yes I did hear about the Billboards records broken and the album being #1 etc, but is it really any good? Not a big fan of most of the Disney channel stuff...

Not really. If they included space aliens, cows, and a cleaned-up rendition of Black Eyed Peas's "My Humps", it might have been better.

No dance-along version??? :?

I liked this movie, it was fun, I'll get it. I don't really mind that it isn't widescreen. All the DCOMs on DVD are FULLSCREEN (AND i HATE how they list it as a Feature on some)

I have the soundtrack of HSM. 10 Tracks, done by the HSM Stars - all very good, 1 Track from B5 - not so good and 2 intrumental Tracks...I don't care about them.

I bet this movie will be great as soon I see it. If it's gonna be like the cheetah girls, i'm gonna like it.

Thanks for sharing!

Seriously, I really really really cannot like this movie (mainly the characters and the inane plot and the mediocre songs, and...maybe I really do hate this movie), yet I feel compelled to buy it, if only for the craziness of Sharpay and Ryan...

Maybe I'm turning into reyquila...buying a Disney product, no matter how bad it is, just because it's got the word "Disney" and I can prove I actually have money to buy it...
