I've never been there for it, but Gay Days take place at Disney World one weekend out of every year (usually the first weekend in June). It is not a Disney-sponsored or Disney-sanctioned event, it's simply a private group that rallies many people to come to Orlando for that same weekend, usually wearing a red shirt. They also visit Universal and other Orlando-area attractions.

As Aaron said, Gay Day is neither sponsored nor sanctioned by Disney, they choose simply to not take a stand.
It's always the first weekend in June, and yes, anyone going will be wearing a red shirt. The thing is, though, that sometimes other families will be wearing red shirts as well, but not be associated with Gay Day. If a family ever complains (and they have), Disney gives them free shirts. So remember that kids: If you want a free shirt from Disney, wear red on Gay Day and complain to a castmember. (The things people do for shirts, honestly...)
I had the weekend off during Gay Day, and Jane and I went to Disney-MGM Studios for Star Wars Weekend, where Gay Day wasn't so prominent (Magic Kingdom is the park of choice). But several castmembers I know took off during the weekend to don their red shirts.
It's extremely organized, all things considered. Many people always think that Disney "allows" Gay Day, and that they're secretly supporting it with group rates and discounts. What they fail to realize is that Disney almost always gives group rates and discounts for any large organization.

Very true, and even if Disney wanted to keep it from happening, they don't really have a legal leg to stand on. I don't understand why people give Disney so much grief over it. Simple ignorance, I suspect. There's nothing Disney can do about it.Escapay wrote:Many people always think that Disney "allows" Gay Day, and that they're secretly supporting it with group rates and discounts. ...That said, their decision to release a limited edition collector's pin of Mickey holding a rainbow that was available only during the first weekend of June this year surprised me, as it seemed more than a little coincidental.

"Coincidental", but very smart. they'll make plenty of money for it!AwallaceUNC wrote: ...That said, their decision to release a limited edition collector's pin of Mickey holding a rainbow that was available only during the first weekend of June this year surprised me, as it seemed more than a little coincidental.

I was actually there for the Gay Day's once. My High School's Band, choir, and show choir performed down there that weekend. Me being in all 3 spent a lot of time performing. it was a lot of fun, but the controversy that the school was sending us down during that particular weekend was unbelievable. I know 6 kids who couldn't go because their parents forbid it (way to be small minded, huh?). What ended up happening was that we had to schedule where we were going to be on certain days according to the group that organized gay day's schedule. The only day that conflicted was the day we spent at MGM Studio's. It was really neat being around so many gay people though, being i come from a very small town in Illinois, lol.
As it turns out i might be going back to WDW around the begining of June again this year, it'll be fun!

At Disneyland, Gay Day is the first Saturday of October every year. Since DCA opened the event now spans over 3 days.
Friday - Downtown Disney
Saturday - Disneyland
Sunday - California Adventure
Disney does not officially sanction/sponsor/endorse Gay Day(s) but they're not going to try to stop it either. Gay Day only increases revenues for the resort.

oh yeah- people complained more that weekend then any other time.
but as its been stated- it is NOT a Disney sponsored event. they DO rent out some of the parks (yes even those off disney property too) AFTER hours for themselves- but thats not til late night. they are of course going to go to ALL the theme parks from Busch Gardens to Holyland and everything in between- but they know the parks/area better then like any other people who come to visit the area.
