Animate Eliminate: The Search for Best Disney Animated Film!

Post by ToyStoryFan »

Hey, all!
This is my first post here, but let me say that I have lurked at this site for YEARS, and cannot thank the staff enough for all its information. While reading this site, there is always a huge debate about which Disney film is the best and so on. Well, I'm here to figure it out!

I am taking 54 classic Disney movies -- all animation -- and pitting them against each other. Through the power of your rankings, they will be eliminated until one remains, which will be unofficialy declared the site's favorite Disney film! The films include all 45 Disney classic animated features, the 6 Pixar films, Spirited Away, A Goofy Movie, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which I take it to be the most popular films. I had to get to a good, even number to make it work with the format I have created for this game, which I explain below:

This is purely for fun, but I will say that the FINAL WINNING film -- to celebrate its victory, I will buy it through Amazon via Ultimate Disney to help support the site, even if I already own it! So, there you go!

Now, here is how the format of the game will work.

I will start off in the Top 54 round. In this round, there will be six groups. Each group contains nine films. We will do ONE GROUP AT A TIME. You will EMAIL to fgcidols01@yahoo.com a ranking of the films from 1-9. You are ranking them by how much YOU personally like it, and nothing else. You are not ranking it by best music, best animation, most unique story, but flat-out, how much you like it. I will total the results, and the FOUR films in each group that get the best score will advance to the next round. Voting closes at Midnight EST the day it is posted.

Once all six groups are finished, 24 films will remain. These 24 are Round 2. In Round 2, there will be two groups of 12 films each. You will rank each group from 1-12 again, based on how much you PERSONALLY like each film. I will tally the results, and the TWO films in each group that are ranked the lowest are eliminated.

This will continue until 6 films in each group remain, so a total of 12 are left. At this point, they combine into one final group, and you rank them from 1-12. The lowest score is eliminated until we have our final winning film! It's very easy.

I use a random number generator to dermine which film goes into which group. It is completely random, which also makes this game unpredictable!

So with that, I will post the first group in the next post, and feel free to email me your rankings! The only rule I have is that you do not post any rankings here on the board, but rather through email at fgcidols01@yahoo.com DO NOT VOTE BY PM!! Other than that, have a blast, root for your favorite, and enjoy yourself!

I hope this game is a success, and I look forward to chatting with you all!

1st, the administrator probably rather would like if everyone would e-mail your lists, not pm. The Pming would take up and use a lot of bandwith.

2nd, why is Spirited Away on your list. Spirited Away should not, seeing that Disney only distributes the film. Instead you could replace it with James and the Giant Peach or Dinosaur, which are both Disney movies.
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo

Thanks, I'll change it so from now on only ranking through email counts. Anybody who voted through PM though don't resend it, thanks!

I picked Spirited Away because it is really popular and gets rave reviews on everything, and I was picking from the list of "Other Animation" on this site. I know it was only distributed by Disney -- weren't the Pixar movies the same way? But seeing as how the group with Spirited Away in it hasn't been up yet, I still can replace it if you think it's necessary.

Keep the rankings coming, 5 more hours to go!

Welcome to Group 1's results!!

Just as a reminder, here are the 9 films that were voted on:

ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

Only 4 of these move on. The 5 films that got the lowest ranking based on the vote of this website will be eliminated.

To start, I will find the film that got the worst score and eliminate it now.

Which film is it?

ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

I'll start with the top row ... Oliver and Company, The Fox and the Hound, and Dumbo....

None of these films got the worst score.

Is the film with the worst score in the middle row?

Brother Bear, A Bug's Life, and A Goofy Movie?

Nope, none of these got the worst score.

Which means a film on the bottom row, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Aladdin, or Chicken Little got the worst score and is eliminated.

Which film is it?

Image

Aladdin.... you did not get the worst score, you are safe.

ImageImage

Which means that either Atlantis: The Lost Empire or Chicken Little got the worst score.

Which film is it?

Unforunately, it is:

Image

Chicken Little!!

That's right, out of these 9 films, Chicken Little got the worst score is becomes the first film to be eliminated from this game.

Why was it ranked the worst? Well, there are several reasons, IMO. One, it is the newest of the animated features, and maybe people haven't seen it yet, or had a chance to really let it sink in. Two, there is a HUGE contraversery right now about Chicken Little, and the fact that it was the first film to transition Disney's move into computer animation may have some people still bitter, and so it got caught in the crossfire, sadly. Some just flat-out did not like it. There could be many reasons.

Either way, no matter what the reason, Chicken Little is the first eliminated film. Bye, Chicken Little!

Look at the next post for which film is eliminated next!

These are the 8 films in Group 1 that are left:

ImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImage

I will find the film with the second-worst score.

Last time, the film that was on the bottom row was eliminated.

If that is true this time, that means that A Bug's Life, A Goofy Movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, or Aladdin is eliminated.

Is that true?

No, neither of these films got the second-worst score!

So, a film in the top row is eliminated with the second-worst score.

ImageImageImageImage

I will reveal the film eliminated right now.

It is:

Image

Brother Bear!!

Brother Bear got the second-worst score in this group.

My personal opinion is that, like Chicken Little, it is a newer film, and so people do not consider it among the classics. Also, everything in this film can be seen in other Disney films -- the plot, characters, pratically everything is ripped from other Disney films -- and they do it better. Heck, even the music is downright copied from Tarzan!

Still, I personally enjoy this film and was sad to see it ranked so low.

So, now we say goodbye to Brother Bear.

Well, only 7 films remain. But only the 4 with the highest score move on, which means that we must say goodbye to 3 more films!

Let's find out now what those are!

ImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

The bottom row .... A Goofy Movie, Altantis: The Lost Empire, and Aladdin....

None of these films had the third-worst score.

That means, the next film to leave us is in this group:

ImageImageImageImage

Oliver and Company. The Fox and the Hound. Dumbo. A Bug's Life.

Which film is out?

ImageImage

A Bug's Life .... and The Fox and the Hound ....

None of you are got the third-worst score.

Which means...

ImageImage

The next film to leave us is either Oliver and Company or Dumbo....

Oliver and Company....

Image

You are safe.

Which means, Dumbo got the third-worst score and is out!

Image

Now, this is a shock to me! I expected Dumbo to be a shoe-in to advance. I also think this is why it's NOT. People expected it to, and so didn't think to rank it higher, because they assumed it would get through, so they wanted to save another film from elimination. I guess so many people did this, it ended up killing the film's chances. Although, some people when voting, said it was way too dark for them and that it scared them too much.

Either way, this is the first true real Disney classic that has to say goodbye.

Dumbo... you should have made it further. :(

Well, based on your rankings, these 6 films were good enough to survive this far.

However, as I've said, only 4 advance, so 2 more films are out.

This time, I'm cutting right to it and saying the film that got the fourth-worst score and is eliminated.

ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

That film is.......

Image

Oliver and Company

I think there are many reasons its leaving. One, this was a very tough group. So many of these films could advance and it would be legitimate. This film to many was just average -- not that memorable, especally when compared to the other films in this group. It's not good, it's not bad -- just average, and I think it's position as falling exactly midway proves that!

ImageImageImageImageImage

These 5 films beat out all the rest, however, one more must say goodbye.

Because if I say a film is safe, that means they advance to the Top 24: Round 2, so instead of that, I will just say the film that JUST missed the cut to the next round.

That film, eliminated with the fifth-worst score in Group 1, is:

Image

The Fox and the Hound!!

This one surprised me, as I thought it would for SURE advance. But hey, that's the way it goes. I know many people HATE the thought of the sequel -- with the plot and terrible animation, so maybe the negativity on that had an impact. Either way, The Fox and the Hound JUST misses the cut for Round 2.

NOTE: To keep the compeition suspenseful, I will not reveal the placing and comments for the 4 films to advance. You will be able to vote for them when the Top 24 round comes. For now, we will move on to Group 2, where you rank them just as you did for Group 1.

Well, Ultimate Disney, based on your rankings, these are the 4 films that will advance to Round 2:

Image

ALADDIN

Image

A BUG'S LIFE

Image

A GOOFY MOVIE

Image

ALANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE

And, please, give a round of applause for the 5 films that are eliminated from the game, but still favorites to many, many people here on the site!

TOP 54: ROUND 1: GROUP 2

Well, one group is finished! Based on the power of your votes, Aladdin, A Bug's Life, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and A Goofy Movie advance to the Top 24. But for now, we have another group to take care of. You will rank these films from 1-9 and send it through email ONLY to fgcidols01@yahoo.com

Only 4 will move on, so vote wisely!

There is a list at the bottom that you can copy and paste to make it easier. :) Enjoy!

Image

MONSTERS INC.

Image

LILO AND STITCH

Image

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Image

FINDING NEMO

Image

MULAN

Image

TOY STORY 2

Image

HOME ON THE RANGE

Image

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

Image

TREASURE PLANET

Here they are, again:

Send an email to fgcidols01@yahoo.com this list from 1-9 based on how much you liked the movie.

Thanks for the votes, and even if you haven't voted before, you can do so now! Also, please, please rank EVERY film. Don't just rank your 4 favorites. From now on, any rankings that do not include all 9 won't count at all! If you have never seen the film before, rank it based on the reviews, or how you THINK you would like it (even if you've never seen it, you can guess good enough if it appeals to you), or just rank it at the bottom, either way, make sure you rank all 9. THANK YOU! :)

01. MONSTERS INC.
02. LILO AND STITCH
03. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
04. FINDING NEMO
05. MULAN
06. TOY STORY 2
07. HOME ON THE RANGE
08. SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
09. TREASURE PLANET

Feel free to discuss the shocking (?) results of Group 1, who you think will advance in this group, and so on here in this thread! I know that just by looking at the choices here, this group is stacked with more favorites than Group 1. Good luck, and be sure to support your favorite!

I now have the results of Group 2's rankings!!

Here are the 9 films that were voted on. 5 are eliminated.

ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

Like before, first I will find the film that got the worst score, based on your rankings.

I will say it is between these two films:

ImageImage

Either Lilo and Stitch .... or Home on the Range.

The film that got the worst score is:

Image

LILO AND STITCH!!

I'm not sure why. Maybe the overexposure? Who knows!

ImageImageImageImage

Here are the 8 films left in Group 2.

What film is next?

Top row...

Monsters Inc. Snow White. Toy Story 2. Mulan.

None of these films got the second worst score!

So, a film on the bottom row is OUT.

ImageImageImageImage

Which film is it?

Finding Nemo ....

You are safe.

ImageImageImage

Which leaves us with The Nightmare Before Christmas... Treasure Planet... and Home on the Range.

That's funny.

I didn't plan it this way....

BUT...

These 3 are the next three to get the worst scores.

The Nightmare Before Christmas placed 8th in the vote.
Treasure Planet placed 7th in the vote.
Home on the Range placed 6th in the vote.

But, in a competition where only the TOP 4 of each group move on, it's not enough. So, we must eliminate these three films now. :(

ImageImageImage

There could be a billion reasons why, and for sure, Treasure and Range are the later of the Disney animation list, and I know a lot of people don't like them or consider them classics.

Nightmare is a shock to me, I know it's considered a big hit just about EVERYWHERE.

I think it has to do with the group. Look at the other films. Toy Story 2? Finding Nemo? Mulan? Monsters Inc.? Heck, SNOW WHITE!! Something like Nightmare can't compete with those!

These are the 5 films that remain. One more must go. I will say that the film that left, in any other group, I'm positive would have advanced.

That film is

Image

MONSTERS INC!.

Poor Monsters. :( This is personally one of my favorite movies, EVER. I think there were two other Pixar films in this group that were battling each other out, which made it tough. Snow White would have gotten through no matter WHAT group it was in, so one of four slots was already taken. With three Pixar films, it was just a showdown, and I think the other two were just more popular. Sometimes you get bad luck, and that's what did Monsters Inc. in.

So, we know the 4 moving on to Round 2! Group 3 is coming up!

Well, 10 films have left the game already: so that means 44 films are still in the running to be declared the site's favorite film (and also the one I will buy through this site)!

We are getting closer and closer, and here is the third group you are voting on:

TOP 54: ROUND 1: GROUP 3

These are the 9 Disney films in Group 1. Please rank these from 1-9 based on how much personally, YOU like them. Only 4 will move on, so vote wisely!

There is a list at the bottom that you can copy and paste to make it easier. :) Enjoy!

Guys, SORRY, I don't have time to post pictures but I got results!

01. LADY AND THE TRAMP
02. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
03. FANTASIA
04. THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE
05. MELODY TIME
06. TOY STORY
07. THE RESCUERS
08. PETER PAN
09. THE THREE CABALLEROS

The four moving on are:

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
FANTASIA
TOY STORY
PETER PAN

Which means, these are the ones leaving us, ranked in this order:

5TH PLACE: THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE
6TH PLACE: LADY AND THE TRAMP
7TH PLACE: THE RESCUERS
8TH PLACE: THE THREE CABALLEROS
9TH PLACE: MELODY TIME

The two package films being the last two ar eobvious. The Rescuers was a little surprise, as that is a pure Disney classic. I thought Lady and the Tramp would get a boost from it's Platinum release coming out on the same day, but Nope! Emperor fell victim to there being too many good films in this list!!

WEll, Group 4 is next!

Ok, I got the results!

I have decided to only use pictures now for the Top 24 round, where it really matters!

Here were the 9 films you voted on:

01. POCAHONTAS
02. SALUDOS AMIGOS
03. THE JUNGLE BOOK
04. BAMBI
05. TARZAN
06. ALICE IN WONDERLAND
07. FANTASIA 2000
08. MAKE MINE MUSIC
09. THE SWORD IN THE STONE

Here are the results:

MOVING ON (not in any particular oder:

POCAHONTAS
THE JUNGLE BOOK
TARZAN
ALICE IN WONDERLAND

And here are the results for the 5 who are leaving:

5th place: BAMBI
6th place: FANTASIA 2000
7th place: THE SWORD IN THE STONE
8th place: MAKE MINE MUSIC
9th place: SALUDOS AMIGOS

Again, the package films... no surprise there. They always are ranked LAST. LOL!! :) Fantasia 2000... the original already advanced, so I can sort of see why. Sword.... many people think it's avergae. Bambi, to me, is the TRUE SHOCKER. Like Dumbo, I thought for sure it would advance, and it JUST missed the cut.

Well, here's hoping it goes better with Group 5!
