Will you buy Blu-ray and DVD, w/ no player?

Post by jamminjake245 »

I am somewhat debating whether to purchase blu-ray disks and DVD (even though I don't have a blu-ray player) I didn't get into the DVD market until February 2003 and purchased all the previously released Platinum editions for a pretty penny. Preferbly, I would not like to go through that expiernce again, very dread ful so what are all of you users going to do?

Predicted Blu-ray Schedule
The Jungle Book - March 2007
101 Dalmations - October 2007
Pinocchio - March 2008
( Blu-ray exclusive starting 2008 ) :
Snow White - October 2008
Peter Pan - March 2009
Beauty & The Beast - October 2009
Sleeping Beauty - March 2010
The Lion King - October 2010
Fantasia - March 2011
Aladdin - October 2011
Bambi - March 2012
Cinderella - October 2012
Wants Muppet Babies on DVD!!
Hopefully if Duckales and Rescue Rangers sell well we will get it!! Don't forget Gummi Bears!

i will probably buy the blue ray versions of movies i dont already have for example snow white. Stuff i already have i wont rebuy unless blue ray is a massive step up from dvd.

But i will end up getting a blueray player. I play on buying a PS3 wich will have one.

Same here.

I will buy the blu-ray discs before I get the player. I got into the DVD thing fairly early (I think early 1999?) and I'm always eager to adopt new technology.

When I get my Playstation 3, which looks like to be some time away now that they have announced a setback on the release day, then I will think about getting Blu-Ray. Not much on technological things, and as long as they continue to make regular DVD's I will be satisfied.

I probably will, if I like the movie enough. I missed out on some great DVDs because I didn't have a player, and I'd hate to make that mistake again.

I'm an "early adopter", so I'll probably buy the Blu-Ray discs, even though I already have most of the classics as originally released. I'll wait to buy a Blu-Ray player until I get my next-gen TV, though (I have a 4:3 Sony HD tube set right now)...and probably until they can be priced in the mid-$200's range.

I'll get a player that plays both formats and each and every Disney animated release that comes in any kind of form or format.

No

I'll wait until there is only one HD format, or a player that will play both formats, before I go with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

Even then I'm not planning to replace all my DVDs. I may replace a few of my favorite titles, but I'll mainly buy new releases in whatever format becomes standard.

I'll keep buying DVD's until the scales tip where there's more Blu-Rays being released than DVD's and stores start limiting the DVD space in favor of Blu-Ray. I have all the PE's already so the first one I'll have to buy on Blu-Ray would be Peter Pan if the schedule is accurate.

DarthPrime, the Blu-Ray players will play the DVD's we have now just so you know.

He's talking about a player that plays HD-DVD and Blue-Ray!!

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be backwards compatible with DVDs, which is great and a main selling point for me.

I'm just not that excited about moving from DVDs right now because there are two formats. If I knew that Blu-Ray would be the main format then I might buy a few titles before I got a player, but I'm still not counting HD-DVD out.

The PS3 will help Blu-Ray. I just hope the PS3 is a better Blu-Ray player than the PS2 was at playing DVDs.

I don't really see much sense in buying Blu-ray discs that I can't use yet. Nothing worse than having a shiny new toy that you can't play with.

I doubt I'll jump on Blu-Ray bandwagon until either a) DVDs start to become obselete or b) prices for Blu-Ray players drop considerably. I'm not spending a ton of cash just for a slightly better picture. I honestly don't care that much.

Heck, I still need to buy a High-Def TV set before I worry about high-def DVDS.

That's pretty much my sentiment too.

The only reason I would buy a blu-ray disc is if it's a movie that I haven't got on DVD and I know it's going out of print. Like, for instance, I had to search far and wide for Snow White and B&tB once I FINALLY jumped on the DVD bandwagon because they were already out of print. I won't make that mistake this time- but I also won't be running out to get the first Blu-ray player/disc either!!

Yes, I'll probably buy them w/o the player. And I may even double-dip too, but only if the blu-ray version is better than the previous dvd version (bonus-feature wise). And I'm also a sucker for pretty cover-art. But it's going to suck if the new blu-rays are twice as expensive as the average dvd (the average dvd, IMO, is around the $29.99 range). And is it just me, or is it too soon for a new format. We've only had dvds since 1999 or so.
By the way, I'm new here. Hi everyone  Couldn't think of any better way to introduce myself.

Before I buy into this I will make sure it is not the next Beta or picture disc, which were the waves of the future and never made it.

I won't buy them without a player. I probably should, but if the HD/Blue Ray machines are going to be backward compatible, why should I worry? DVD presentation of most animated movies and many other movies is already very good.

I can see maybe once I own the new system to get maybe some of my favorite movies on it (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Mononoke, Titanic, Silence of the Lambs), and new releases, but there is little chance that I will will be re-buying all my DVDs, especially when it is backwards compatible. However lets say movies like Hercules, The Black Cauldron and Hunchback all get special fuly restored editions on Blue Ray once I get a blue ray machine, I will double dip and get the better edition, but no movies like Snow White, Lion King, Sprited Away, etc.

I will most likely use the backwards compatability to my advantage, and save a good amount of money, only buying new releases once I get the system.
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline

This is another reason why I'm hesitating on going Blu-Ray. I could be completely off-base here, but I really don't seeing it catching on as much as they're predicting. There's a lot of people, myself included, who just upgraded to DVD in the past two-three years or less. I can't imagine all those people are going to be that inclined to have to upgrade again so soon. And for what really? Just a moderately improved image quality, which unless they've also upgraded they're TV sets, they're not even going to notice it.

DVD caught on because it had big advatages over VHS: the image quality wouldn't degrade over time; no rewinding, smaller packaging, more durable, etc., etc. Blu-ray has only two advantages that I'm aware of: larger disc capacity and improved picture quality. And I don't think that's enough to sell it in droves to the masses. The videophiles will jump on it, sure, but I doubt the general public will be as keen.

Just my way-too-long two cents on it.

I'm in no hurry to upgrade anytime soon. I won't be buying blu-ray disks before getting a player. And I'm not planning on getting a player before getting a High-Def TV, which won't happen until my current TV dies.

I will buy Harry Potter 4 on HD when it comes out on April 11th even when I don't have a player. Seeing as how my parents bought an HD-TV, I think they will upgrade the DVD player as well.
