Yes, this is an expected closure.

Haunted Mansion closes January 18 – March 9 for removal of the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay and more extensive refurbishments.

I have no idea what the "more extensive" refurbishments are, but the main reason for the closure is to take down the Halloween/Christmas stuff.

They got it up pretty quickly. I was actually really lucky when I was over there. I arrived at Disneyland on September 5 last year, and we decided to do as many things as we could in our first few days (even though we knew we'd be coming back the following week due to our cancelled New Orleans trip). When we left that week, HM was still open. Returning the following week, the whole thing was closed off and many of the exterior refurbishments were already up. Glad we decided to go on it the first time around!

At any rate, the longer closure may be due to "more extensive" refurbishments. Some reports lead us to believe that it will be undergoing minor alterations, although not to the same extent as "Pirates of the Caribbean". However, it is also possible that some of the more regular work has been forgone in other months in an attempt to keep this open for the bulk of the 50th anniversary year. The closure is mainly to take the Haunted Holiday stuff down, but may also require some regular maintenance. Some reports (here) claim that: "Steve Davison, the Entertainment Department producer responsible for the wildly received Haunted Mansion Holiday was appalled to see the condition of the Mansion and its infrastructure when he and his team of Entertainment workers descended on the attraction in August and September to fine tune their Holiday plans. It seems the Entertainment folks are used to producing sparkling shows in well kept venues, and were disgusted to find paint peeling in sheets off the Mansion exterior, wallpaper that was torn and faded, old carpeting that was horribly frayed and smelled like a gym locker, and Doombuggies (ride vehicles) that were battered and creaky".

Loomis - that report of what Davison found is ancient(2002). It is from the first year they did the overlay. Al Lutz has not been at MousePlanet in years, and Wolfgang Puck and Luminaria havent been at California Adventure in even longer.

D'oh.

I was looking for a specific report that I read about it needing some refurbishments generally. I guess I just jumped on the first one I found that looked like what I wanted to say!

At any rate, my understanding is that there will be the odd tweak here and there in addition to removing the Holiday stuff.

Ok, THIS report is brand new:

I won't post here because there are spoilers, but it is sure to displease a few fans and excite others.

Just scroll down a bit to "Here Comes the Bride"!

Wow! That was interesting!

I have to go into the category that is "displeased" unfortunetly. For me, the magic of the Haunted Mansion is that it IS kinda cheesy, but yet very impressive and unique, especially considering it's age. It's a timeless attraction that doesn't need to be changed. I'm fine with the Pirates change(as long as it isn't too drastic) but The Haunted Mansion feels perfectly fine where it is IMO!

I found this report rather interesting. One part sound quite all right, but I"m not so sure about the other part. Trying not to spoil anything, but I think the first part, involving the Bride, is not necessarily a good idea. However the second part that they mention (about the Ghosts), I don't think is a necessarily bad idea, just a slight improvement over the current version.
