Your Top 5 List excluding Platinum & Treasures

Post by consultant »

I'm wondering what people's Top 5 list of Disney DVD's are excluding anything released or slated for release in the Platinum and Treasures Collections?

Mine at this point would be:

1. Fantasia Anthology
2. Dumbo 60th Anniversary
3. Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece Edition
4. Toy Story 3-Disc Toy Box and/or 10th Anniversary
5. Tarzan Collectors Edition

1. Fantasia Anthology

The 3rd disc is stunning, but so are the meaty documentries on the 2 feature discs, and the commentaries. And I don't even like the original Fantasia that much!

2. Ultimate Toybox

This is odd. I don't by any means think that this is the best DVD set Pixar could do, its a bit to fragmented for my licking with nothing that substantial to "bite into" apart from the TV special "making of" featurette. But its a solid set.

3. Atlantis: The Lost Empire CE

I adore the Atlantis set. I'm not crazy about the film, but I don't think its bad by any means. It most certainly could have been better though. But I love the second disc - play it complete and you get a long, substantial making of or you can choose to explore it in little bits and bobs. Not to mention all of the wonderful design galleries etc. available outside the documentary.

4. Tron: 20th AE

The best release for a live action film to date. I have a soft spot for Tron, being just the right age when it first came out. The documentary is good, and you'll be surprised how little of the film was made with computers and how much was made with traditional animation.

5. The Country Bears (UK, Widescreen)

This or Pocahontas 10th AE (I have the French release), but I feel I must give the Bears my support. Its a good film. yes it is :) and its a good disc too with the mockumentry and concert adding to the "reality" of the Bears world. I wish it had the damn trailers though :(
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

The Top 5 Disney DVDs in my collection:

1. Dumbo: 60th Anniversary Edition and Peter Pan: Special Edition

It's by far two of the best single-disc presentations of a DAC and two of my favorite films. Though perhaps Peter Pan shouldn't be on the list, since we're not supposed to include forthcoming Platinums.

2. Tarzan: Collector's Edition and The Emperor's New Groove: Collector's Edition

Both are pretty exhaustive when it comes to the making of the film, and they're pretty good films as well.

3. Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition

A deserving film with a wonderful 2-disc set. I've always wondered why it was never part of the Vault Disney collection, it would have been a wonderful inclusion. But this version is still practically perfect in every way.

4. The Vault Disney Collection (Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, and to an extent, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and the DVDs I don't own: The Love Bug, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Escape to Witch Mountain, and Return to Witch Mountain)

A wonderful presentation of classic Disney films. If only other Disney movies were given this treatment.

5. Classic Cartoon Favorites, Volume 4: Starring Chip'n'Dale

It's Chip'n'Dale, what's not to love???

Top 5 Hmm is this including TV shows or just Movies

I would go with concerning only Movies:
1. The Incredibles Widescreen
2. Sleeping Beauty Special Edition
3. Not sure most of my collection are the newly released ones so The Old Yeller/Savage Sam 2 Disc Collection
4. No Clue might have to edit when i'm at home
5. Same here as on number 4 Depending on if the list includes just Movies or TV shows too.

What is with the double posting. Can't the moderator delete one of them to save room?

My favorites in no particular order:

Toy Story - The Toy Box Collection This is just a pure joy to have in a collection. Tons of extras, and great video transfers of the two movies.

The Country Bears Having been to Disneyland more times than I can count in the sixties and seventies, this was my favorite attraction. While the movie is pretty lame, just the idea of seeing the Bears live again was a treat. Christopher Walken was a good villain.

Tron - 25th Anniversary Edition Still far a away one of the better Disney films. The special effects were ahead of their time and hold up today.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - Special Edition What can be said of the story of Captain Nemo and his kidnapped crew. This 2-disc version answers all the questions about how they made this marvelous film. James Mason, Peter Lorre, Kirk Douglas and the infamous Octopus.

Fantasia Anthology A definite must-have for every Disney collector. This box set raises the bar on what a box set should be. Whether you like the original or "Fantasia 2000" this collection is about as complete as you can get.

Those would be the top five, there are a lot more, but those highlight my collection of Disney live-action and animated films.

1. Alice in Wonderland-The Masterpiece Edition
2.Pocahontas-10th Anniversary Edition
3.Mulan-2-disc Special Edition
4.Atlantis-2-disc Collector's Edition
5.Tarzan-2-disc Special Edition (Yeah, here in Region 2, Tarzan's special
edition is a 2-Disc one :) ), or you could call it Tarzan- The Collector's
Edition; It's exactly the same thing, the 2 discs' contents are identical
it's only the cover that differs. Stupid things by Disney again, I guess!

And I chose them because technically, they are Platinums. A Disney Platinum Edition couldn't be better than those Special or Collector's Editions are. Believe me, you'll never see a Platinum Edition on these movies. They're already Platinum, like it or not.

1. Fantasia Anthology

What is there to say, the films rock and so does the dvd, it's packed.

2. Atlantis: The Lost Empire CE

The 2nd disc is amazing, that is some documentary, and it can be viewed in bits and bobs. So much information about the film. This should be the blueprint for all of disney DVDs, No platinum has been as good as this IMO

3. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea SE

Stunning, there's an 90 minute documentary which is fascinating alongside shorter featurettes, the archive section rocks too.

4. Lilo and Stitch 2 Disc SE

Almost as good as the aforementioned Atlantis set and still way better than any of the platinums. Disc 2 again has a killer 2 hour documentary, with information pouring out of it. The interview with Joe Grant is a highlight. Again it's just chock a block!

5. Tron 20th Anniversary SE

I don't much care for the film, but the brilliance of this DVD can not be denied, It's got everything na dthe doc is really good too.

Other titles which could have just made the top 5 if i were in a different mood, or if I had watched them more recently are:

Dinosaur CE
Swiss Family Robinson SE
The Emperor's New Groove CE
Pirates of the Caribbean SE

I would like to add that Sleeping Beauty 2-Disc Special Edition is great too, but it needs audio and sound restoration.

Are you kidding about Sleeping Beauty? That film had a gorgeous transfer and excellent soundtrack. Because it was recorded in stereo to begin with, this has much more dynamic to it than any other Disney animated film from Walt's era. The only flaw with the picture is the occasional flickering (most noticeable during the scene where Phillip kisses Aurora). Besides that, though, there's nary a flaw in sight.

Now, here's my top 5:

1. The Fantasia Anthology
2. The Ultimate Toy Box
3. Atlantis: The Lost Empire - Collector's Edition
4. The Incredibles: Collector's Edition
5. Monsters, Inc.: Collector's Edition

Honorable mentions go to the Collector's Editions of Tarzan and The Emperor's New Groove, Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition, Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition, and the Vault Disney releases of Pollyanna and The Parent Trap.

Here's my top 5 list exluding Platinums and Treasures:

1) Alice in Wonderland: The Masterpiece Edition
2) Dumbo: 60th Aniversary Edition
3) Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: 25th Anniversary Edition
4) Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition
5) The Sword in the Stone: Gold Collection

The reason why "The Sword in the Stone" is in the top 5 list because I have about 4 special editions and this DVD had a good amount of extras, here and there.

Well,....no, I don't think so.
Compare the video and audio of Sleeping Beauty with Cinderella's Platinum release. Much worse. As you said, there is a flickering. I DEMAND from an edition that claims the title of "special" to be COMPLETELY PERFECT.

Well, I don't think my list is going to be terribly different from the rest of the ones here.

Fantasia Anthology & Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box

It is hard to compete with either of these box sets, simply because they are both so comprehensive. The only thing that could improve the Fantasia set is having the full Roadshow cut on the 1940 film, but I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon.

Tron: 20th Anniversary 2-Disc

One of my favourite live-action films and DVD sets. It was very easy to sit down and watch the entire set of extras in one or two sittings, only to look up at the clock and realise you've wasted an entire afternoon being nostalgic. A great examination of a misunderstood classic.

Atlantis: CE

I actually own two copies of this, it is that good :) (The R4 and the R2:CE). Definitely one of the most thorough examinations of an animated film, and a very underrated film at that. Between the audio and visual commentaries, and the truly astounding multi-navigational 'making ofs' on the second disc, this is without a doubt one of the best animated DVDs Disney has put together. The R2 CE, as 2099net would put it, opens like a shampoo bottle. It is a very funky design for a Disney DVD, and it simply adds to an otherwise excellent set.

Vault Collection

It is hard to separate these 4 (or 6, depending on your point of view) films, as they are all of a high standard. Let's count the Vault Collection Box (Pollyanna, Parent Trap, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson) as one release, and call it a day, huh?

-------------------------------------------

Also, I'd like to add a vote for the Lilo & Stitch: Special Edition, but I didn't include it above because it isn't available in the US. The second disc, featuring a 2 hour exploration of the making of L & S, is worth the price alone. Add to this an audio commentary and all the features of the original single DVD, and you have one of the great 2-Disc sets.

Pretty high standards considering that complete perfection is really hard to come by. The current transfer and restoration is wonderful, and perhaps the only way to make it better would be to present it in its full CinemaScope aspect ratio (2.55:1) as opposed to its 35mm aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Deathie would know more about this than me, lol.

1. Finding Nemo
2. Toy Story
3. Monster's Inc.
4. The Incredibles
5. A Bug's Life

It's either this, or Platinum which I can't do, I don't think any of the Special Editions are spectacular. Other than that these are the best and they are just stuffed with bonus features. Pixar just loves sticking in every little thing they want on their dvds, and (with Pixar probably having full control over their dvds now) their dvd might be even better for Cars. Yeah sure it has a few games here and there, but there is always a commentary & documentaries! :)
