Laserdisc VS DVD
Laserdisc VS DVD
I have just gotten myself a Laserdisc player for those movies that are not availeble on DVD. (like song of the south)
I was therefore wondering on what movies that are diffrent?
With the player I got a lot of great Disney laserdiscs. There was several great boxes with lots of stuff in them, and also some ordinary editions. There was also over 30 discs with animation shorts so I have a lot of great stuff to watch.

On Laserdisc you will have all the original versions of the films. The only one that is censored on Laserdisc is Fantasia, of course. The regular editions generally are just the movie itself, no extras. The box sets are amazing and there may never be anything that will equal them again. First of all they came in beautiful packaging. These were geared toward adult collectors so there are no "fluff" extras there. They go in depth on the production of the film. Also, each box set usually came with lithographs, soundtrack CDs and sometimes even hardcover books. Enjoy!

There are a whole bunch of LD boxsets (Disney) being auctioned off on ebay, and most are by the same guy, it almost makes me wat to buy them all, and then get an LD player, but alas I haven't the cash...
Still for all you collectors that have an LD player, but don't have the Lion King Boxset and want the original theatrical cut that was scene in theatres in 1994, as it was scene, there might just be an auction for you.
But Hurry!!!

Really? I'm honestly shocked by this statement. The CAV box set is a really nice transfer and the editing during the "Pastoral Symphony" was done differently (and better/less distracting) than the recent DVD.karlsen wrote:I have just made a list over the films I have on Laserdisc:

It sounds like you scored a major coup in your recent LD acquisition. My hats off to you. I have every one of your box sets plus most of the other domestic titles that you have, but it took me YEARS to acquire them all.karlsen wrote:Mountaineering Mickey

What player do you have (make and model)? If it doesn't have an AC-3 RF output, you might consider getting a player so equipped. You will have all of the "recent" boxes (The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, and Toy Story) in DD 5.1 if you get an RF demodulator for it.
Congratulations on a truly stunning instant collection,

I was refering to what I had read on Imdb about the box set. They state that some copyes of the box had "laser lock" (what ever that means). I therefore asumed that the singel edition was better then the box set, but I don't know this myself by experience. The Lizard King wrote:Really? I'm honestly shocked by this statement. Yes I was realy lucky. I bought the player and all these discs for $420 and I will probably manage to sell many of the non Disney titles for that amount. I also have 2 setts of the Star Wars serie and these goes for about $100 each.Mickey's Runaway Brain wrote:It sounds like you scored a major coup in your recent LD acquisition. My hats off to you. It is a Pioneer DVD-919E. It does not have AC-3, the seller notifyed me of this before I bought it, but I do not know what I have to do to get it. Where could I get a RF demodulator for my player? The Lizard King wrote:What player do you have (make and model)? If it doesn't have an AC-3 RF output, you might consider getting a player so equipped. If it doesn't have a RF output, you'll have to install it. (Techincally, you can do this yourself). It just a regular coax connection. But it will only output RF (radio frequency) signals, so you need a demodulator to convert the signal before it goes into your receiver. You can find demodulators on eBay, but they're expensive ($50-100 depending on model).

I believe that your player (the DVL-919E) is the "champagne" European version of this player (hence the "E"). The American version (the DVL-919) is basic black. This combi player has a "noise reduction" feature. In my opinion, when this feature is turned "on," the picture is a little too soft for my tastes. I would try to turn the noise reduction "off," and I think that you will find the picture to be much improved. Look in your owner's manual to find the section about "noise reduction."karlsen wrote:It is a Pioneer DVD-919E. As far as the AC-3 RF out goes, I believe that this player is supposed to support AC-3 RF output. The DVL-919 (no "E") certainly does. Look on the back of the unit for a black coaxial output that is labeled "RF" or "AC3," or something to this effect. demodulators can be found on eBay, but they are getting scarce. Popular ones are the Yamaha APD-1, Pioneer RFD-1, and SONY MOD-1. Be prepared to spend $150-200 for one, though.

RF demodulators can be ordered here:
http://www.bde.de/
Their pricelist is a bit cryptic, but I believe that an external RF-demodulator is 249 Euro and a card that can be built into the LD-player or amplifier is 155 Euro.
The same shop also carries kits and modification services so that you can add AC-3 output to LD player models that come without it.
Also, some midrange and highend amplifiers/receivers come with built-in demodulators for AC-3 RF. If your current amplifier does not have that input, it might be worth considering for your next amplifier.

Just like Lizard King says, I'm pretty sure that youre model does indeed have an AC-3 output. It's not on the list of upgradeable players at www.bde.de.
So to get AC-3 (Dolby Digital) sound, you can either use an amplifier with a built-in RF demodulator, or you could use a conventional Dolby Digital amplifier in combination with an external demodulator.
