Giving up on trying to find legal copies of Disney DVD's

Well, over the past 4 years, I have tried to buy 5 Disney OOP DVD's via Amazon.com. One 3 years ago (a pathetic bootleg copy), and 4 just last week. I got 2 of the 4 and of course..... Bootleg. VERY good Bootleg's but bootlegs, never-the-less. I'm betting that the other two on order are bad as well. *sigh* I don't want to pay $100 so my children and myself can watch some good Disney movies!

These two looked legit, no negative feedback, no feedback stating bootleg. One was the Little Mermaid from (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/at ... AUL2XSF3DR). Security seal and shrink wrap and everything. Opened the DVD case, and had inserts, and the DVD looked well made. Problem number one (and would only be seen if looked at...) On the printed side of the DVD, the part number was E3505. So, I turned over the DVD and looked on the non-print side at the holographic images. Alas, it showed E3499. A mismatch. Second point... Slapped the DVD into my laptop, ran DVD Decrypter and voila, region free. And the directory name was a set of numbers. Fake.

The second one 101 Dalmations was almost identical. Looked great! But the holographic item number was a mismatch to the printed side item number. And again, region free, and directory on DVD was some weird number. Fake. This time from (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/at ... 8YUYYPIHX9).

I'm convinced that if you are a just someone who just wants legal copies to watch and enjoy you are completely out of luck. Wish me luck in my other ones...

Good luck, but have you ever checked video game stores that deal with used DVDs? Every so often you'll find a hidden treasure, many of us can testify to that. GameStop would be one of your best bets if you wanna find some OOP Disney films. But I wouldn't hold my breath for any Limited Issue titles, and I wouldn't waste money on them either.

Also, if your kids don't mind much, you could always find a very cheap used copy of the movies on VHS...

You beat me to the punch there Escapay. I was going to suggest just the same thing. Check with used DVD stores, Pawn Shops, and don't be afraid to cruise garage sales. I found a "Fantasia" box set for $10 at a garage sale and it is a legit one. I just picked up two other OOP Disney animation films for $7.95.

I managed to find Lady & the Tramp: LE long after the OOP date. However, the well is getting a little dry lately.

Thank you all for the wonderful information. Yes, I go to many used DVD places (I LOVE wherehouse music/wherehouse.com, but they seldomly have Disney stuff). I make the circuit about once a week. There are probably many similar people doing the same thing to resell on ebay or something that's why I can't find the stuff

I'm checking out the two places mentioned.

Personally, I would not waste my money on a DVD when a Platinum Edition or Special Edition has been announced or widely known to be coming. If I could not wait, I would buy the VHS as Escapay suggested.

All the Limited Issue DVDs are pretty much digitized versions of the VHS, except for the aspect ratio. They were nice freebies with the Snow White DVD, but they are not worth buying.

My experience is much like Escapay's and junkie's.

Although I went looking for the DVDs in 2002 not 2006. Got Little Mermaid from a rental store(they wouldnt sell it but somehow I lost it so I just had to pay for it

). Picked up the other limited editions at a second hand CD store.

If you go to eBay, you can find some legit OOP DVDs. Of course, you'll be paying more than retail, but seeing as these titles are OOP, I wouldn't make an argument of that. However, if you do go this route, be sure to check the seller's feedback- not just their feedback rating. Make sure that their previous customers are satisfied. Beware of seller's who have comments like "Nice copy of movie," etc.

Just got the third of 3 today. Yup, a bootleg. This one a little more obvious as all the files on the DVD were dated in October of 2003. This was for Pinocchio which was released in 1999. One more to go.

I don't own a VHS player any longer, and doubt I ever will. And I don't think I can wait almost another year for the next release that's due out

Danged Disney! So, back to searching legitamate online stores and local 2nd hand Brick & Morters.

I think the easiest way for me has been ebay, and I've just had to be extremely discriminating about the details. I want the sellers to acknowledge that bootlegs are out there, and that this is a genuine release from my country. Most of the bootleggers will not do that - in fact, they typically omit most details.

Unfortunately it's also the expensive way...

I'm still trying to find affordable copies of the Emperor's New Groove Ultimate groove edition, and collector editions of Tarzan and Atlantis.

I'm telling you people this site is awesome, not just for OOP DVDs. I think you can find a lot of awesome things, but I know you can get hard to find DVDs. I bought Snow White, and BATB because I really wanted it in my collection. Let me know what you guys think about this SITE?

It's a nice looking site, only they charge barely below the MSRP for even the DVD's still available in stores. Most stores, except for places like Suncoast charge no more than $20

That's true but if you really want (and I mean really WANT) the OOP DVD this is the site. Yes it's a bit pricey but in the end it is worth it. It just really depends how BIG of a collector you are....The DVDs that are out now though, I would only buy in one store, and that BEST BUY!!

Escapay like I said before, it depend how BIG of a collector the person is. Yes the prices are pricey, but if they want the real thing this is the site. I know it's just a DVD but some people that are DVD collectors, and want all the Platinum Disney DVD, and didn't get a chance to get it, it's right here. I don't know how many Snow White DVDs they have left.

I will give you example of collectors, that money is not a option. Coin collectors for one. A coin that's worth a nickel someone might buy for $100.

I actually have asked a few rental places and libraries if they have The Little Mermaid limited edition and they all say it was reported lost too! How ironic!

The Emperor's New Groove 2 disc (gold cover edition) is still available through the Disney Movie Club. I just received it Monday.

I think that's the one you are looking for. You can't get it as one of the dvds when you join, but after you're a member, you can buy it. They list the Atlantis Collector's edition as in stock as well.

I bought a copy of The Emperor's New Groove Ultimate Groove Edition and Atlantis: The Lost Empire Collector's Edition from Fry's for $34.99 each. The price isn't that bad, really...there are so many special features on the second disc.

When I went to Fry's, there were no more copies of them, but when I went back a few weeks later, they had put a copy of both dvds on the shelf, so I'm assuming they have a box at the back.

Also, take advantage of local video stores that are going out of business..I picked up 3 dvds from a place by my dad's house for $25 total. It's not really a thing that collector's would do, but it's better than spending $100 on a new, authentic dvd.

And don't forget goofyestes- it's only $21.95!!! An awesome price. I ordered both the Atlantis CE and the Ultimate Groove edition of TENG for $21.95 each (and used a free shipping code) through the DMC. I think I got mine in October or somewhere around there.

I couldn't find these in stores around here and quickly realized they are really expensive online. DMC is the best place to get these!
