PSP/UMD movies: do you buy them?/what's the point?

Post by Evil Genie Jafar »

Hi,

I ask because either the prices of these movies are too high ($30) or they just sell like regular DVDs ($20). And I was wondering if people actually buy these things?

I ask because I see no reason why:

- why bother to pay more or the same as a regular DVD when you don't get to have the same extras plus the audio qualities?

- doesn't you want the PSP mainly just for play? Besides, just watching one of these movies will consume the battery.

- I don't see the replay value on this. It's not the same experience to watch a movie with a home theater experience (aka, full replay value for me) than just watching it in stereo.

I mean, if I didn't have any other choice (portable DVD player) I'd get my favorite(s) movie, just because I know I'll keep on watching it(them) evey now and then. But I wouldn't have a collection.

PS

The cases DO look cool. And I like the idea on realeasing the right movies (not that they're masterpieces) but great ones for the road.

The answer: $$$!

Yeah I guess it's cheaper than a regular portable DVD player so that's why people would buy them, however I can't imagine someone "collecting" these either.

I've been trying to work out the point to UMDs for a while.

We have this wonderful technology called DVD, which hasn't even been fully exploited before we start looking for the next level (Blu-Ray). UMDs seemed like a backwards step to me, at least at first. After all, they hold less information and the device that plays them is smaller.

However, their size makes them incredibly portable. Far more so than a portable DVD player, and at least the PSP is multi-functional.

They are yet to release any Disney UMDs in Australia, and I suspect I will start getting them - and a PSP for that matter :D - when they do. My main incentive is that a few companies might start sending them to us to review for DVDBits, which would make the whole process less expensive.

I definitely don't buy them. I guess they are good for people who like smaller disc. :)

I with everyone here about PSP/UMD and I just don't get them. They are smaller and easier to be portable but a small DVD player is dropping to $100 - $150. I do a fair amount of traveling and the my portable DVD is always with me to fill my time. I enjoy TV shows the most on the road.

Yes, I was wondering about this for a long time and I posted this question on this forum. I too see no point in them. They cost more than DVDs, having significantly less bonus features, only work on PSPs, which have much smaller screen than normal portable dvd players. I have a portable dvd player, so I don't buy UMDs.

I dont see any point in UMDs..

-they only have wide screen (prefer full)
-no features
-Cost extra
-Can only play them on a PSP(which i may get)

ques about the PSP... does it have a camera built in it also?

I don't think it has a camera, but in response to the other queries:

Widescreen: I think most people generally prefer the original aspect ratio given the option, at least the collectors do. I'm not sure how much sense it makes on so small a screen to stick with widescreen, but who knows what we will be playing the equivalent of UMDs on in a few years?

Features: In fact, a number of them are starting to include bonus features. I noticed that the Blade UMDs coming out here have commentaries and the odd deleted scene. Sure, not as much as a DVD, but that really isn't the point is it? The idea is that these are portable, so chances are that you will be watching the movie on a plane/bus/car trip.

Cost Extra: That's true, but that's now. It's new. Eventually the price will come down.

Only on PSP: again, that is true now. Who knows what the future holds?

From what I have heard some of the UMDs are not true OAR. I think some are formatted to fit the PSP screen.

I see no point in UMDs, but then I don't own or plan to own a PSP. I think it would help the sales if Sony came out with a device that allowed you to play the UMDs on your TV. That way you could watch them on your PSP and then at home on your TV.

My son, who is serving in Iraq, has both a Portable DVD player and a PSP. He says that the PSP is used for games, but occasionally when he is on the road and on an overnight he borrows a friends movies for the PSP. He says that the quality is not bad, but unless you use ear-buds for sound, that is the 'crappy drawback'.

He says they sell PSP movies over there for less than $10. He prefers his Portable DVD player for his main movie collection because he likes to watch movies in OAR whenever possible.

I own a PSP, and have yet to buy a UMD Movie. i might get Scarface when it comes out, because it's my top 5 fav movies of all time. Now if SONY is smart; which they usally are, they should have the PS3 (coming sometime in the year 2006 (crosses fingers)) support the UMD. That way all this fuss about it's not worth it will come to an end. But they also somehow have to have extras like DVDs, and in a few months I believe BLU-Ray which the PS3 is already supporting!

No camera on the PSP. I want a PSP but I'll only use it to play video games. I already have a portable DVD player so what's the point.
