Well I wasn't sure whether or not to put this in the Pirates of the Caribbean thread, but there have been new ideas to change the ride and make it more like the movie!

Personally, I liked it the way it was where very small things were similar, but it was not 100% similar to the movie, but it'll be cool none the less!

Given that I only rode the thing a few months ago, I can say the original definitely lives up to my childhood (1987) memory. It is also a great ride, even after all these years (possibly still one of the favourites there, although nowhere near as crowded as it should have been). It completely captures the fantasy and adventure elements, which is Disney at its best.

However, as with all things, change is inevitable. It wouldn't be the first Disney attraction/ride to receive an upgrade to keep up with the times, and it probably won't be the last. As Walt himself said: "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world". As suppose that is the best rationalisation for a change to an existing ride.

It is only natural that Disney would want to synergise (I can't believe I used that word) the parks with the new movies, and this could be a great move. It sounds as though the changes to tie in with the movie won't change the "spirit" of the ride too much, and that's what counts in the end. That said, it is still a perfectly good - well, excellent really - ride without any changes. Still, I look forward to seeing what the have in stall!

No! They'd better not change PotC! The movie was great, but the ride is absolutely perfect as is, and I'd hate to see it change in any way!

I remember constantly hearing rumors that they'd be adding Jack Sparrow to PotC simply because too many guests were asking "Where's Johnny Depp?" every time they rode Pirates. Must've been a shock to some of them to find out the movie was based on the ride, not vice versa as is usually the case with Disney attractions.

I'm all for "New" Tales, lol. Quite simply, PotC is a wonderful ride as is, but like Carousel of Progress, it's in dire need of an update. The first scene, involving the ship and the fort, comes to mind. The cannonballs and their little "poof" when they hit the water is so lame. Also, wouldn't it be cool if they replaced that lousy treasure room scene in the end (you know, with the clerks tied up and the big shoot-out) with a moonlight duel between Sparrow and Barbossa? Think of how great the AA's would be to make them look skeletal!

Quite simply, PotC is a wonderful ride as is, but like Carousel of Progress, it's in dire need of an update.

Well in Walt Disney World it does (that ride just can't compare to the BRILLIANT ride at Disneyland), but the one at Disneyland is as close to perfection as most people can probably achieve in a theme park attraction. I wouldn't mind if the "Barbossa" like character starting calling the ship, "Black Pearl", or something small like that, but the ride is a real classic, that doesn't drastically need to be changed!

I mean even Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio(the writers of "Pirates") admit that the goal of their movie was not to recreate the ride, but make a completely different pirate story with some references to the ride!

But still, I'm sure seeing a Jack v.s. Barbossa duel or improved boat fights could be nice touches. After all, like Loomis pointed out, Disneyland will never be complete!

I don't mind the change, as long as they don't go overboard with it. It's a great attraction as it is and putting a few new AAs sure won't ruin it, but a complete overhaul just to make it fit a modern franchise might. And Escapay, take it from a tourist that has never heard of the concept of dark ride before seeing Disney World. The water blowing effects may seem dumb and cheesy to you regulars, but it's quite impressive for someone that doesn't have it near home.

How to imitate the cannon-falling-in-water effect in your own backyard:

1. Fill a kiddie pool with water.
2. Take a baseball.
3. Drop it.

That's how cheesy and dumb the effect is, and I can't exactly see anyone be amazed by it.

Being from a country that is not fortunate enough to have a Disney park in it, I found the whole ride to be fun and thrilling. No matter how cheesy some of the effects are. (as Escapay rightfully pointed out).

I think the key with all the rides - well, Disneyland generally - is to just go with it. That's how you have fun.

At any rate, a few tweaks here and there couldn't hurt. It doesn't sound like the changes will effect the ride too severely. After all, it is being closed for months not YEARS (as was the case with Space Mountain).

When you have nothing even close to reaching Pirate's excellency, then you're dazzled by everything about the ride, including the cheesy effects. It's just something you won't understand until you'll experience the "misfortune" ( ) of not having these types of rides on a daily basis.

I just got home from my Disneyland Vacation(2 hours ago) we changed our 3-day Hopper to a 4 Day-Hopper and had a blast. I rode just about every ride there. Rode Pirates 3 times twice during fireworks when there is no line. It was also the last ride I rode on day 4. Anyway it lived up to my childhood memories(1978) and my 4 year old son loved it. We plan to go back in 3 years when my other son turns 4

Hmm... I can't decide wether this is good or bad. On one hand, I'm totally phsyced about Jack, Barbossa, and Davey Jones now being in the ride, but I think it's a little bad they're changing a classic ride. Well, I guess it would be cool if Disney kept most of the original ride, and only added a few new things from the movies. But, I'm excited to see how this will work.

I think, judging from the info above, that is exactly what is happening. It would be more than a few months worth of work if they were totally revamping. I think the idea is just to include a few references to the movies in the ride, as one could argue that - as far as mass audiences are concerned - the movie Pirates is more widely known than the ride now. Plus, this is an excuse to beef up some of the technology and tweek a few key moments, while maintaining pretty much all of the things we've grown to love. I personally love the idea that the rides continue to grow and evolve over the years, something that Walt himself said should happen to the park.

It's not as if they haven't changed the ride in the past. The pirates used to chase the women around in circles (and not the other way around) until the company decided that even alluding to rape was probably not the best idea for a family attraction.

I was listening to the radio show Bob&Tom this morning and they announced it there, it was pretty cool. It was funny when Kristie (Lee, the news-woman) flubbed the name Barbossa, at first she said Barbarossa, and then corrected herself.

I remember in my childhood (early 80's) how I dream to visit one day Disneyland since I am from MX. I used to see one of the “master-view” disc of Disneyland with the pictures from the seventies, it is really enjoyable still seeing those scenarios today while my Wife, Son and me take the ride, if they change some of the things it may take a least 25 years to became again a classic ride... to retouch a vintage it is needed the hands of a really experts and not just a commercial movement. If they do something we hope they wold do it right.

I'm one of those people who hate change, especially when it comes to things I like quite a bit, so I am rather unhappy. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic about a theme park attraction, I'm just glad I was able to ride the Disneyland version one (or four) more times last summer.
