It´s strange this DVD has not yet been released on region 1, when on region 2 it has been released for some time now.......always thought that they were released first on US.

I hope the Picture quatity will be better than the european DVDs... I love the film and the quatity of the european DVDs is a shame.

THX sounds good but I am a little bit sceptical abuot that...

Sorry to take this thread into the gutter, but I can't help wondering if the DVD release will be the naughty version

or the nice

one. You remember the recalled VHS release, don't you? The one that featured (?) the centerfold during the flight scene....

I don't think there's ANY way it would be the naughty version. It's not like this was some kind of intentional animation gag (the way I understand the Baby Herman stuff from WFRR), but rather a prank from some person or persons in the post-production department.

And think about it, if Disney goes and cleans up subtle things that can be explained but aren't (such as the Lion King clouds of dust for the IMAX release), and they've actually *acknowledged* this gag and recalled copies of the movies, I don't think there's any way THAT version will resurface.

They won't release the "naughty" version.

For the UK release they actually when to the trouble of replacing that sequence of the PAL transfer on the DVD with a poor NTSC -> PAL segment. You can see this in the screenshot below with the poor 3:2 pulldown artifacts (the "double lines"). This is the only section of the DVD which exhibits these artifacts when the film is paused.

Normally you won't see 3:2 pulldown on DVDs at all when paused as the DVD player itself does the pulldown. I suspect this section was taken from an old VHS master Disney UK had lying around (for VHS releases, the 3:2 pulldown would be performed on the actual transfer, as VHS players cannot do pulldown themselves).

I just got my copy of the US release today and it suffers from the same problems. It does not appear that they put any cleanup work into this release. There are a ton of glitches and artifacts. It appears to be the very same master they used for the European release. So infortunately, the video quality is not great. It is, however, much better than video.

yes but store get the shipment a week before, there's a few option how get got it early

1) bought it at a store that broke street date

2) work for a store that carries dvds and stole one

3) works for a video rental place

4) has a friend in BVHE

5) get sample discs to review

I actually saw Atlantis II VHS in my local Suncoast but when I asked themn about the DVD they said that it wont come out until next week. And also a weird thing I noticed is that Disney didnt release the VHS of Atlantis II in their usual big white box (dont know what it is called) but just a regular vhs box. And I have a question, why did they stop relesing the DVDs in the white box and now they use a black dvd box (like Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet) ?

They're still using the white keepcases for most of the DVDs, for instance the Pan & Scan catalogue titles, next week's 2-disc Special Editions, and The Rescuers. Seems like maybe only new theatrical releases get the black cases, but there are exceptions.

Trying to figure out Disney's methods can give you a headache.

As much as I hate discussing The Rescuers yet again, for some reason there is this popular misconception that the Rescuers flopped. It didn't. According to Maltin's book, The Disney Films, when the Rescuers was released it became the highest grossing animated film ever, at that time making $48,775,599 in the United States alone.

wow, i really didnt know this, stupid me

. Thanks for the information. I guess time didnt do this film justice. I do know it was a big hit in europe, epecially in rental. Than i guess it really IS unfair the way disney treated this film. But i dont get disney at all... why screw up a movie like Lion king while the films from the eighties need some rework animationwise. It really doesnt make any sense to me

I hope they don't tamper with this film and remove the frame with the naked woman. If they do, we wouldn't be getting the "original" release.....

For the record, taking that out is 100% acceptable, being that it's a family movie.

ok, i looked it up:

The Rescuers was Disney's most commercially successful animated feature at the time of its initial release, generating over $40 million in worldwide rentals and out-grossing such strong competition as Star Wars in many countries including France and Germany.

It also proved to be a hit with many film critics. The Washington Post called it, "certainly the best Disney feature since 'Mary Poppins"' while Variety hailed it as a "special event...a film which blends visual sophistication and emotional simplicity, along with the upbeat humor that marks the best of Disney product;" Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times called it "the funniest, the most inventive, the least self-conscious, the most coherent and fast moving... and probably most important of all, it is also the most touching (feature length animated film from Disney) in a decade or more

The song "Someone's Waiting For You" was nominated for an Oscar in 1978.
