R4 (Australia) November - Aspect ratios, running times etc

Just to update.

I posted some November releases for Australia here, but this seemed to warrant its own thread, such was the nature of the news.

The BVHElist has been updated for November releases (even more!!!) and now includes:
- It's Your Birthday Party with Winnie the Pooh
and a few more rereleases.

Most of these items for November have gone up for preorder on EzyDVDand AtlanticDVD (the only 2 I use).

The exciting news is that both Ezy and Atlantic list Make Mine Music at 72 minutes.Hopefully this holds true and is uncut.

No indication whether the other films will be unedited or not, although I'm sure at least Melody Time will be as the UK version was.

OK, other things I was meant to check up on.
- Man of the House: Atlantic lists this as being in 1.85:1 Widescreen

- First Kid specs are still TBA, but hopeful based on the others...

Even better, these last few titles are all between $16-$19 Australian ($11-$13 US!!)

Funny looking art, closer to the original poster than the US video artwork, but different. Anyway, I'll gladly pick it up sometime, someway, somewhere. I hope nothing was cut from the US release to get a G rating?

Sucks about Muppet CC, but then I don't anticipate a Widescreen release for that anywhere at this point, which is ridiculous considering it was a widescreen laserdisc and time and effort was put into the disc presentation and extras.

About Make Mine Music in the UK... no news on the DVD release (apart from the supplements which were certified at the BBFC months and months ago) but the official Disney UK home enterainment site specifically mentions The Martins and the Coys (despite this segment being edited out on the last UK VHS release). Is this a good sign for an unedited DVD?

The Aussie listing on the retail sites don't mention the Martins & Coys, but list the running time as 72 minutes.

I suspect that the info on the retail sites was taken from US sites, as is often the case here because BVHE doesn't actually release any info in advance for...well...anything.

i e mailed Bvhe uk and asked them when we can expect make mine music and their reply said that there is not set release date due to unforeseen legal problems

Looks like I may as well order the Australian release then (but odd that Australia and the rest of Europe have no 'unforseen legal problems' - especially as Disney distribute the film in all territories)

Hold on - just thought what this could be:

Recently (within the past year or so) the BBFC has a new ruling that no two versions of a film can be on general sale, should one of the versions have a higher rating certificate.

So being as Make Mine Music is available without the Martins and the Coys section on VHS as a U, and possibly the unedited Make Mine Music will get a PG release (although I doubt this - the unedited version was available with a U certificate on it's first UK VHS release) - that could be the problem. Perhaps it means 2 cuts of one film, period, no matter what the classification.

I've sent an e-mail off to the BBFC, just to see where they stand on the matter. They have a reputation for informative answers to any email questions or requests. We shall see.

Here's the result of my BBFC Email query. I must say, I am impressed by the speed and detail of their reply Even, if, through no fault of their own it's not that helpful.

BBFC policy only forbids the release of different edits of a film if they
would require different classifications (eg one at '12' and one at '15').
Current policy does not forbid the release of different edits of a film at
the same category (eg two different edits at 'U'). So, we're afraid BBFC
policy is not to blame in this case!

Looking at our records, we have in fact already classified the film for
video release in two separate versions. The first version (classified for
video release in 1987) ran at 1 hour 12 minutes, whereas a more recent
version (classified for release in 2000) ran at 1 hour 5 minutes. The
difference resulted from the deletion of an entire sequence, A RUSTIC
BALLAD - THE KING'S MEN SING - THE MARTINS AND THE COYS. Perhaps this
sequence was removed because of music copyright issues and is proving
difficult to restore for the same reasons?

In any case, we're not guilty!

So it looks like whatever the 'unforseen legal problem is' it's nothing to do with the BBFC.

It is starting to make me think that we will in fact be getting an edited copy, even though retailers are advertising as 72 minutes.
I think that all their other info seems to be gathered from US sites, except for the cover art, which while similar is obviously Australian due to the big G on the covers.

Guess, as with all Disney DVDs, I wont know until I have it
