Treasure Planet and Atlantis

Post by Mermaid Kelly »

What is the difference between these two movies? I've never seen either. While looking at dvd's, I saw that the Treasure Planet dvd says it was made by the same people that made Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, so thats really cool. Also just by looking at dvd covers, I think Treasure Planet looks better.

Treasure Planet is definately better! In the battle game it completely wiped out Atlantis, which I believe only got 2 votes, possibly 3, but I really sure it was only 2.

Atlantis had so much potential, I think, but just did not live up to it. I think I am going to rent this DVD sometime and do a review on it, for Disney DIScussions.

(On a side note -- Luke when are you going to post my review of Sword in the Stone? If you are still busy, I understand. )

Atlantis is a sci-fi wanna be, with a lot of plot hole, and IMHO, cheap animation...

Treasure Planet, on the other hand, has a touching story, and I think can be seen as a coming of age story for boys. There is plenty of stuff in there that is aimed towards young boys, their target audience, such as solar surfing and interesting Aliens. It is a cool spin on the classic novel, which I never read  .

However, I would, if I were you, go out and rent both movies, and judge for yourself. :)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is one of my favorite movies of all time. I must have seen it eight times at the cinema (which, for me, is a record). Treasure Planet was really quite boring. I felt like falling asleep through most of it and I was well-rested and excited to be there.

I'm busier than ever, but thank you for reminding me; I'll get to it this weekend. Even though I don't agree with a word of it. ;)

As for the topic at hand, I certainly prefer Treasure Planet. Atlantis is the weakest Disney film since...well, since Sword in the Stone, I suppose. In my humble opinion, of course. :D

I did enjoy both of these movies, but prefer Treasure Planet. I just enjoyed the characters a bit more in TP..and it just felt like a better story than what we get in Atlantis.

So, mine's more of an emotional response rather than one backed up by specific points about both movies.

Unlike most people, I like both quite a bit, but my vote goes to Treasure Planet. It had better animation, better story, more heart, and it just felt more Disney to me than Atlantis did. I still like Atlantis, though. :D

Altough both films are quite irregular, I prefer Atlantis because I found the story and graphic style more interesting. I think that Treasure Planet characters are better developed, and I liked Silver, Doppler and specially Amelia very much, but I still prefer Atlantis... :D

Treasure Planet is the much better film for me. I felt for Silver and Jim while watching TP, I really wanted them to be happy, but in Atlatis I didn't really feel for any of the characters. Also my dad and I came out of Atlantis very confussed, I'm still rather confussed about it to tell you the truth.

I have to say that Atlantis really is the weakest disney film ever when you compair it to the two other movies the directors and Producer of this film had done before (Beast and Hunchback).

The sad thing is Atlantis could have been one of the most amazing animated movies ever. It was going to be a big, epic undersea action-adventure in the vein of 20k Leagues Under the Sea. But then Dinosaur floped, and Disney's management (*cough* Eisner *cough*) showed how much faith they had in Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, their covoted Best Picture-nominated directors, when they forced Atlantis -- and several other projects -- to undergo a "reduction in scope." They reportedly forced Wise and Trousdale to cut out several important story/character devolepment sequences, as well as a lot of monster scenes, and their absense ultimately hurt the film IMHO. I think some of this stuff is available in rough form on the Atlantis Collector's Edition DVD, but I don't have it yet, so I'm not really sure. Personally, I would love to see Trousdale and Wise go back and complete a director's cut version, but what with Atlantis bombing and Disney seemingly abandoning 2D, that will probably never happen. If I were Disney, though, I'd start to treat my top directors and animators with a bit more respect and trust. No wonder Gary Trousdale recently went over to DreamWorks.

As far as epic sea action-adventures go, I think Disney did itself right with Pirates of the Carribbean. On the animated front, DreamWorks did a really nice job with Sinbad, too. I think it's got a lot of qualities that the movie Atlantis wanted to be would have had -- wonderfully done, breathless action sequences, a good, solid story, and (yay!) character devolepment.

More later.
