Disney Live Action old VHS (what are those?) releases...

Post by everyshow »

Hey everyone...it's my first post here, so hello and how's it going?

I have a specific question about the old line of Disney live action releases on VHS...I used to rent stuff like Parent Trap and Escape To Witch Mountain and Shaggy Dog and all the rest when I was younger and they would all have this trailer on them that was a montage of all the other live action releases from the 60's-80's like Condor Man and Watcher in the Woods and The Devil and Max Devlin and I was thinking about the trailer the other day and really wanted to watch it again because my brother and I had that thing memorized: the song and the order of all the clips and everything, whether or not we had seen all the movies or whatever. So I was just feeling nostalgiac...and so I went down to Rocket Video because they pride themselves on having a a huge collection of 'classic movies' that may or may not be on DVD and whatever...and a lot of these are on DVD now, but of course they don't have that old trailer.

So I rented The Shaggy Dog, The Three Lives of Thomasina and That Darn Cat hoping to see the trailer and also watch some old favs, but, alas, none of them had the trailer. I popped in That Darn Cat first and it looked promising because that old Walt Disney Home Video intro/logo came up where is is that kinda 3-D sillhoutte of Mickey, that is just an outline and kind of spins around and different colored outlines kind of appear within the last one...pretty cool...but then it just went straight to the movie...so in furious disappointment I took it out of the VCR and put in the other two, and one of them just had trailers for Might Ducks and some other 90's Disney movie, and the other had a trailer for some of the old classics but it was totally different with no lyrics to the music...not the right one.

So I was wondering if anyone knows about the trailer I'm talking about...it had this song that went something like "Come on home where the magic is waiting, everything's shiny and new..." and ended with..."Walt Disney and YOU!" and it had clips from all those movied I mentioned above and it was awesome...actually pretty much the greatest thing I've ever seen and so I just want to relive some of that former glory and goodtimes. So if you know what I'm talking about, do you happen to know what series of VHS released had this opening trailer/montage...what the box art was or any other specifics or distinguisihing remarks to help find a VHS that might have it on there...?

The Shaggy Dog and Three Lives of Thmasina tapes I rented definitely look newer, some more recent (as in early 90's) VHS rerelease of specific titles. They are in cardboard sleeve that load from the bottom and have a rectangular box at the top that says "Walt Disney's Studio FIlm Collection." So that is obviously not the right series of releases. That Darn Cat seemed more promising, because I think it is an older release. It's in one of those big white, plastic cases that opens like a book...I think similar to the 'black diamond' VHS pacaking and it has Mickey on it as The Sorceror Apprentice and he is all smiley and has his hand held out with stars coming out of him and a big red "WALT DISNEY" next to him in the classic Disney font with 'HOME VIDEO" printed underneath the name. But as I said...no dice there either...so I guess that's not the right release series either...

...anyways...someone has got to know what I am talking about...so let me know if you any clues that can lead me in the right direction. The video store had some other movies like Kidnapped, The Love Bug, Parent Trap, Gus, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, Napoleon and Samantha, Pet's Dargon, The Black Hole, and Flight of the Navigator that were all older VHS releases in one form of packaging or another...so please Disney fans, solve my mystery!

Thanks!

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I think about that montage trailer ad/promo ALL the time too. Only I have it on tape somewhere because when I was a kid my parents used to record movies they'd rent from the rental place on video (before copy protection was all the rage) and so we could keep them, watch... I know it was illegal but it was 20 years ago, so who cares? Statute of limitations has probably passed on that by now.

So as to where would you find that exact montage... I know what VHS's the movies were that were recorded from on that one tape I still have somewhere (in horrible condition, god I hope it'll still play). Try Dumbo and Sleeping Beauty first. Of course, they would really have to have the groovy technicolor(?)-ish Mickey logo on the front. I can also pretty much confirm for you that this promo ad/montage would be at the very end of the tape if anywhere, after the movie is through. If neither of those tapes had the promo on it (even at the end, don't forget to watch the movie through), the only two other tapes I could recommend it might be on are Pinocchio and The Parent Trap. I think those are the only 4 Disney videos my parents recorded off the rental tapes.

I'm going to look for that tape of mine IMMEDIATELY after getting off this computer tonight. I'll type in the lyrics to the song that plays and I'll mention every clip I see or whatever I basically recognize. I think that tape shouldn't be too hard to find. At least I hope right.

I found it! It's at the very end of Dumbo, right after the clown holding the drum that says THE END. Though, like I said it has to be a VHS edition old enough to be able to record off of it without copy protector screwing up the picture.

Here's a rundown of quotes from the clips (because I can't tell all of the movies since I haven't seen all of them):

"Come on home, (I cannot possibly distinguish this next part- sounds like something "lazy" or "amazing")
everything's shiny and new
come where excitement is playing
Walt Disney and you

Come home to all your good friends: Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Herby, Alice, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Pollyanna (you have a stubby, little nose), and many more (Pete's dragon disappears, making sound effect sounds like "icki likki ick-poah").

You'll see your favorite heroes including Zorro, Davy Crockett, the king of the wild frontier, and Condorman, Disney's spy in the sky.

But there's no escaping the Disney villains
(you call that murder? / lean on 'im! / am I in your way? / ((Oliver Reed:)) he is not an agent of the CIA, he is a writer of comic books!! / ((Don Knotts:)) wait don't nobody move, this is a hold-up! / that rotten car is driving me PIFFY! / fire that musket and I cuts his throat / was that anyone we know? / ((Stefani Powers:)) he's your uncle?! ((Ken Berry:)) Yes that's why I happen to know Uncle Alonzo has a heart of... Woah oh oah wo! / ((Bill Cosby:)) Want a light?).

You're invited to enter a world of excitement(!), suspense
(what did you see?! help me!), surprise, and laughter, a world of tenderness ( ((Jane Wyman:)) oh my God! Please try to understand, Pollyanna... You're such a part of our lives now. Nancy and Angelica, Mrs. Langenoff(?). And I love you as if you were my own little girl. Won't you give me that chance, please?), tears ( ((Kim Richards:)) Tony, we've got to get out of here, before it's too late, please), adventure, and music ("Supercalifr..."), and more laughter (hey! you mangey curr, come back with my car! Get him! Uh- that shaggy dog just stole my car!), and more music ("Roses and rainbows, you'd better take a look again" , ((Bill Cosby:)) that's just the way we like 'em!).

It's magic! It's frightening! It's cute
(isn't this a clever disguise? what are you supposed to be? I'm a little black rain cloud, of course. Hmm mm, silly old bear)! It's fun! And it'll take you by surprise!

Are you ready for the Disney line-up
(you ready?! I'm ready, you ready? I'm ready, you ready? I said I's ready)?

Come on, come on home
See what's (see what's) waiting for you
Waiting for you-hoo

Come on home where your video's playing
Goodtimes are waiting, it's true
Come where your family's waiting for (?)
Walt Disney and you, Walt Disney and you, Walt Disney and you

Now available from Walt Disney home video!

None of my VHS tapes have this. If anyone can rip it off of one of their tapes and post it online, I'd greatly appreciate it. It sounds like a fun and nostalgic type of trailer.

It lasts nearly 5 minutes. But I couldn't do that, I don't know anything about technology.

Thanks for tracking it down and giving the rundown...I'm gonna go back to that video store later in the next couple days and see if they have Dumbo on VHS and check it out...see if it will be the correct version...and now that I'm thinking about it...I think that the trailer might have been on the old VHS copy of Mary Poppins that we had, so I'm gonna call my mom tomorrow and see if we still have it (she might have thrown all our old videos away, though...) so good luck to me!

You're very welcome, I'm glad to help in any way I can. I'm surprised as hell so few people have seen this. I guess a lot of people here got their first experience watching most of these movies on Disney DVD. Not me, I had to rent all of them on VHS. Which I did, even as I was growing up. But I would say even now that the only way to have seen this would be if you rented videos as early as they were coming out. I was really lucky that my parents were enterprising and sneaky renting patrons.

Again, directions to find that you have got the right copy of Dumbo is, of course the VHS box cannot have the Masterpiece Collection logo on the side or front, also I'd avoid a box that has the Classics black-diamond logo. I suppose it would have to be that manilla/vanilla-ish white box with the red Mickey Mouse on the cover and a square/vertical rectangle on the front with Dumbo on there somewhere.

I suppose the cover might look like this:
Image
But this might also have the Classics logo on the side, which is a bust. Meaning, no luck.

But I wish you lots of luck finding it. A good old-fashioned VHS rental place might have some great classic copies of Disney VHS's and such. I wish I could find one. Also, it would be really nice if Disney themselves could have added all the video preview ads for their movies to the special DVD packages, in addition to trailers, teasers, and TV spots. Like for instance, I recently ordered The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (really old '86 VHS version) and it had a very classic ad for Sleeping Beauty.

Howdy!

Don't forget, after the "Now Available from WDHV" part, we see a clip from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh with Tigger saying "Terrrrrrrrrrr-ific!" or something like that, then the picture zooms out in streaks. We then see a cheesy outer space background and then a diamond-effect brings the star BG to black and that's it. TOTALLY 80S!

I've seen that on rentals of old Disney tapes. Heck, just before my family switched to DVD in early June 2002, in late May 2002, I rented an old Love Bug tape from that era!

BTW, was this on Laserdisc and RCA Selectavision Videodisc versions as well? Some of y'all may remember the following warning screens and logos as well:

1: In the early 80s, the old FBI warning in a white box on a red BG, then a "Licensed for private home viewing only, blah blah blah, All other rights reserved" screen in yellow words on a sky blue background (looks very 60s, don't y'all think?), and then the Neon Mickey logo with 50s/60s "Walt Disney" insignia, and "Home Entertainment" zooms in.

2: In the mid 80s, the FBI warning is red on a white background, then the "Private Home Viewing" screen is in white Peignot (Mary Tyler Moore font) on a red BG (this was also used on early Touchstone videos, and in the late 80s, during the Sorcerer Mickey logo era), then the Neon Mickey plays. The "Walt Disney" is in the font y'all recognize today, and "HOME VIDEO" zooms out, in the old "Epcot" font.

Do a "Google" search for "KRS Logos," go to that website, and read this and many other logo descriptions. Join Yahoo's "Closing Logo Group" as well. (BTW, finding those logo descriptions and that specific site encouraged me to join the Closing Logo Group! The real reason for finding the description was to find out when WDHV was formed!)

You will not find this trailer at the begining of the film because back when these were released the trailer did just that it trails up at the end of the movies. So if you have one of the old VHS's that are in the white rental only cases play your movie to the end and it should play shortly after that.

That's what I figured from Lazirio's info...and I had already thought of that as well...but on those first three I rented, there was nothing after the movie was over. Not even on That Darn Cat, which was in the old white VHS cases. I rented Apple Dumpling Gang and watched that yesterday, again it was in the old white rental case. And there were two trailers after the movie, but they were just the full trailers for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Pete's Dragon. They were pretty cool anyway...but still not what I'm looking for. So I'm still on the hunt...

Funny...back on 9/15/01, my family rented an old version of The Apple Dumpling Gang and at the end, it had that trailer! Yes, it was the early 80s tape!

Well that is funny, I was just going to advise that he try more animated or only animated movies next time. But anyway, if you find a really old Dumbo, you know you got it.

I just wish someplace that there was a real historical record of all the at least animated videos, when they were released on VHS and in what exact form every time... Some kind of database anyone could read through any time.

Yeah, it was on the old white clam disney videos

I have been selling most of mine off in the past couple weeks but I still have a few of them left. The old trailers are so fun if you ask me.

Also on some of the old day disney vhs's the very first. They would include 2 disney trailers on the end. Like The Sign Of Zorro first printing, has the trailer for Black Hole/Many Adventures Of Winnie THe pooh at the end.

Since this is about trailers, is it just me, or is there a trailer for The Black Cauldron on the first Pinocchio video release? I seem to remember one. Now if only someone who had the video and coul rip the trailer, if it's on there, could rip it for all of us to see. :(

All the old first series Cartoon Classics series from about '83 to '85 have this and I think at lkeast a handfull of the domestic videos feature it too.

It would be a nice nostalgia kick to have a remastered version appear as an extra trailer spot on dvd.. I used to hate seeing it though, cause it meant the cartoons were over.

After mentioning the logo used on the non-classics releases (the Neon Mickey), I want to mention about a logo used on mid-80s "The Classics" releases: on a blue BG, the "Walt Disney HOME VIDEO" text, in orange, with "WD" in the usual font, and HOME VIDEO in a regular font (not the Epcot font), rotating from right to left. Then, "THE CLASSICS," in white, does exactly the same thing. Both flip so that the "TC" text would be above the "WDHV" text. The blue BG becomes a blue diamond on a black BG, and a white glowing diamond outline (same size as the blue diamond) zooms back. The end result looks like a neon sign. And the music is a proud medieval sounding horn fanfare (80s style). To find this logo, look for what appears to be an old (I mean REALLY OLD) VHS or Beta Disney Animated Classic release. One way to tell is that when the Classics started, The Fox and the Hound was the latest release at the time. (The Black Cauldron came out in 1985, also during that period.) Then, make sure to look for "The Original Animated Classic!" in a black flap at the lower corner. Also, the back cover has smaller detail than later Disney Classics releases (e.g., no Dolby Surround on tapes yet, etc.) Another way to tell, mostly when renting, is the label. The very first Classics tapes also used the oversized labels like the non-Classics releases of the 80s.

BTW, would y'all like to see all the old WDHV logos (Neon Mickey and Cheesy Diamond)? I got the video files from Yahoo's Home Video Logos Group, which is connected with the Closing Logo Group. I can either direct y'all to those pages, upload these videos on a file sharing site, or just e-mail me at sethn172@neo.tamu.edu and ask for the videos!

Be sure to ask for any surprises as well.

P.S. Were there any Neon Mickey releases that had movies that used the current "Walt Disney Pictures" logo? I know in the final years that logo was used (1984-87), any logo was omitted from the start of the film, but did movies like Return to Oz or Flight of the Navigator come in the old white cases? And was the trailer present?

I'm just curious.

Hey, good to see another CLG member here!

But let me make a point about the original Classics tapes. There were seven of them featuring the original Black Diamond logo. They include Dumbo, Pinocchio, Robin Hood, The Sword In The Stone, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, and Lady and the Tramp. A typical "Cheesy Diamond" tape has the cover art with a plain "Walt Disney's" (or "Walt Disney Productions'") heading above the title (predating the "A Walt Disney Classic" byline), it has the little tab reading "The Original Animated Classic!", the Black Diamond print logo appears on the rear side of the cover artwork on the top, and the tape had those oversized labels with the Diamond logo on them too. This logo was used from 1984 to 1987.
Image

In 1988, starting with "Cinderella," Disney retired the "Cheesy Diamond" logo and used an updated Classics logo, featuring Sorcerer Mickey in the beginning and using the "Masterpiece Collection" theme. On the cover art, it changed so on the top it would now read "(A) Walt Disney('s) Classic" on top, the Diamond print logo wouldn't be on the back anymore (most 1990-1992 releases did not have the "Original Animated Classic" tag on it). For the cassette, until 1990 they continued to use the oversized labels (with the Diamond logo still on them), then they switched to the text printed directly onto the tape cassette itself.

For more info, both about the animated logos and the videos, see Ryan's website about Disney classic releases.
