10th anniversary Special Edition of Hunchback?
Since next year will be the 10th anniversary of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (I believe it came out in '96), do any of you suppose there will be a Special Edition DVD release of the film?

Anyone else have Deja vu?
No official confirmation has been given, but we're pretty sure that's what Disney is planning. We also think Hercules will be re-released in 2007 for its' 10th Anniversary. I'm hoping they comes out tomorrow, but alas.
Just remember, the search button in the top left corner of the forums is your friend. Use that to find a thread already like this. Trust me, there's plenty of 'em.

I've already bought Hercules, but I may hold off on Hunchback and wait for the SE with all the frills and bells and whistles (lots of 'em, I hope).
Buffy: We have a marching jazz band?
Oz: Yeah, but, you know, since the best jazz is improvisational, we'd be going off in all directions, banging into floats... scary.

I think it's very likely we'll see a 10th Anniversary Edition of this, especially considering all of the laserdisc material easily available:
* Audio Commentary with the Directors and Producer
* "The Making of The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
* History and Background of Notre Dame de Paris
* History of the Production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame
* Early Presentation Reel
Character Designs
* Quasimodo
* Esmeralda
* Frollo
* Phoebus
* Clopin
* The Gargoyles
* Archdeacon
* Djali
* Miscellaneous Townspeople and Gypsies
Story Reels
* Prologue - "The Bells of Notre Dame"
* "Heaven's Light/Hellfire"
Deleted Songs
* "Someday" With Optional Commentary
* "In A Place of Miracles" With Optional Commentary
* "As Long As There's A Moon" With Optional Commentary
* Workbook and Scene Planning
* Art Design, Layouts, and Backgrounds
* Computer Generated Imagery
* Multi-Language Clip Reel
* Publicity
* Trailers
The only things I'd expect them to add are the original "Someday" music video by All4One, a new music video, and some kiddie games. If we're lucky, Disney will take the Pocahontas route and keep the fluff to a bare minimum, with no new video showing up at all.

I don't see why Disney would contact Schwartz for a DVD. I mean, his work is done for the movie. Maybe for a commentary? =/ For a live action/broadway version of the movie....that's a different story.MovieMusicals.net wrote:I contacted Stephen Schwartz (the song writer). He hasn't been approached by Disney for any future DVD.

Alan Menken recorded featurettes for the Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, and Pocahontas DVDs. He also is doing/did stuff for the Little Mermaid DVD coming in 2007. Elton John did stuff for the Lion King DVD.
If they do Hunchback same style of Aladdin, Beast, and Pocahontas, then yes, he should be brought in to do a featurette or two.

OOO!
Hunchback would be wicked! I hope they do release it, actually it sound very much like disney to take any chane at having a 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th etc. Anniversary edition of any movie so i'm guessing there will be. the laserdisc features that dinseykid listed sound really great! i bet the Notre Dame de Paris would be interested. (oh and for anyone who doesnt know french, Notre Dame means "Our Lady")
When I first saw Hunchback, i got scared at the Hell Fire scene, lol, then i watched it about 4 years later and loved it! I really hope to see this one on shelves ASAP for a special edition!

Just a small correction It's been confirmed that The Little Mermaid is coming out in October 2006 not in 2007.MovieMusicals.net wrote:He also is doing/did stuff for the Little Mermaid DVD coming in 2007.
Now back on subject I would love Hunchbackback on DVD in 2006. It will probally happen. I also think that Disney is trying to re-release everything sooner then planned, so they can jump into blue-ray faster. I think that all the classics will receive great editions by the end of 2006 to get into blue-ray faster. And I think that the 2007 Platinums (and maybe the 2006 one's) will be moved up also. But I think Hunchback will will be defenitaly released in 2006 for it's anniversary.

...unless they are cheaping out and releasing a 10th Anniversary Edition with barely any effort put into it. (which, of course, would be a huge shame) I think Hunchback has improved with age and more and more I see people who didn't like it when they are young but now they are enjoying it a lot more and giving it the respect it deserves.MovieMusicals.net wrote: If they do Hunchback same style of Aladdin, Beast, and Pocahontas, then yes, he should be brought in to do a featurette or two.
Maybe it was too adult at the time for North American audiences. Now it fits in better. Some kids today (not all since many just love the fart jokes) would rather see something serious than let's say an elephant with big ears or read Harry Potter instead of RL Stine.

Well I don't think The Hunchback of Notre' Dame will get a 2-Disc edition for two reasons:
1. Disney usually starts rumors before they release their DVDs. While some UD members say it can be a possibility, there has been no word from Disney.
2. The Hunchback was a flop! While some of the more disappointing Disney features get a special edition(Brother Bear, Alice in Wonderland) this film has really gotten forgotten over the past years and gets pretty bad reviews.
I personally don't want a 2-Disc edition. For one I hate this movie! The music was incredibly dull and overrated, the heros were very unlikable, and the dialogue was chessy. Whiel Frollo is a great villian, and "Hellfire" was a great song, this movie offers little.
So that's just IMO. Hopefully a 2-Disc will be released for all you fans out there!

All that proves is that they won't be releaseing one anytime soon. That doesn't mean one will never be released.Timon/Pumba fan wrote:1. Disney usually starts rumors before they release their DVDs. While some UD members say it can be a possibility, there has been no word from Disney.
There have been movies that got worse reviews than Hunchback and they got 2-disc treatment.Timon/Pumba fan wrote:2. The Hunchback was a flop! Actually that film did pretty well at the box office and it is somewhat remembered. The Hunchback is nearly forgotten now and it was a flop.Pasta67 wrote:There have been movies that got worse reviews than Hunchback and they got 2-disc treatment.Timon/Pumba fan wrote: 2. 1. Wrong. Back in Spring of 2002 when the single disc was released, Disney posted specs for a 2-Disc SE on their official site for a couple of hours before mysteriously removing them. It seems they intended for a short while to release the current disc and a 2-Disc simultaneously, but decided to wait so that people double dip.Timon/Pumba fan wrote:Well I don't think The Hunchback of Notre' Dame will get a 2-Disc edition for two reasons:

2. Wrong. Hunchback made $100 million at the box office domestically, and $325 million worldwide. That's far from a flop. I'd call it a modest success. Disney would die for a "flop" like this nowadays.
I'm 99.9% positive a Hunchback: SE will be re-released. It got the deluxe treatment on laserdisc. So far Disney's been using these laserdiscs to make 2-disc editions of their films. Hunchback, Pinocchio, and Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros (packaged together) are the only films left that haven't had (most) of their material ported over to DVD. Pinocchio is guaranteed a re-release (possibly as a Platinum, though that remains to be seen), and while Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros may be pushing it, Hunchback certainly isn't. I doubt Disney would refrain from releasing it despite your feelings.

Timon/Pumba fan,
Honestly, just because you didn't like the movie doesn't mean it's not gonna happen. And your "reasons" why it shouldn't be released were very inaccurate.
1) Disney doesn't always start "rumors" for every thing they do. Nor do they need to.
2) FLOP?? Are you kidding! The film made over $325million in box office worldwide!!...
Worldwide Grosses
The Lion King - 783million
Aladdin - 504million
Tarzan - 448million
Beauty & the Beast - 377million
Pocahontas - 346million
Hunchback - 325million
Mulan - 304million
Hercules - 252million
Little Mermaid - 211million
Hunchback did much better than Mulan, Hercules, and Little Mermaid! Those totals don't even include home video sales/rentals!
3) FORGETTABLE? Puh-lease. It was a hit German stage musical that was rumored to come to Broadway. It was a favorite stage show at MGM Studios. A sequel was made to bank of its already established success.
Plus, it is Michael Eisner's favorite film! He nearly green-lit a TV musical version for ABC last year before this whole Disney scandal happened.
