Didn't watch anything today yet, and I don't think I watched anything yesterday.
But on Sunday I watched a bunch of movies:
High Tension: Got it on DVD from a friend. A pretty graphic, foreign horror film. Pretty good darn good.
Journey of Natty Gann: Finally cracked open that DVD. Terrible quality DVD but a great film! I couldn't remember it well from seeing it when I was a kid, but it was excellent. Glad I got the DVD new for only 5 bucks though.
A Far Off Place: Bought it cheap on VHS once and this was the first time I'd ever watched it, both the movie AND the tape. It was very good, and I adore Reese Witherspoon.
Boat Trip: Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz are trying to get booked on a singles cruise, but Will Ferrell in a cameo books them on a gay cruise as a prank. This movie is sooooo freakin' hilarious! Saw it on TBS.

Oh...that is just plain wrong. Boat Trip is a wholly disgusting exploitation of gay men (and doesn't make straight men look a whole lot better, either) for the purpose of one more way for guys to get girls, and High Tension is nothing but a self-serving sleazefest with a little gore and a lot of fake psychological plodding. It was literally the director's excuse to mix lesbian erotica tailored toward straight men with sadistic, perverted killing. Seriously, Roger Ebert didn't give it 1 star for nothing. He was right - I should have listened to him instead of the clueless straight people who think this movie was good. I wasted a good $10 on that piece of crap DVD. That's another sign, really - that's cheap for Lions Gate.
Anyway...
I finally got to see Squirm (1976), and it was great. A- : The acting wasn't very good, but it wasn't famously-bad either. The plot was fairly illogical, but it's a movie about killer worms. You expect that (and if you don't, you're a fool) going into it. And finally, it could probably have used some more gore. But what it did have going for it were very well executed scares, an interesting music score, good performances by the two leads (especially the actress playing Geri), very good camerawork, moody lighting, great editing. It's use of shadows / candle light really emphasize the large shocks in the finale and make for a completely unpredictable viewing. A highly watchable movie that never once got boring. And the ending is... very scary. At least, I thought so. I recommend anyone into horror check it out, it's far from your average killer bug movie. In fact, most of the scares in the ending aren't prompted by the worms themselves. You'll see what I mean.

Okay, so you didn't like those other two, but you though "Squirm" was great?! Ha, interesting. I doubt that one could hold my interest outside of MST3K.Lazario wrote:Oh...that is just plain wrong. Of course those other two films are exploitative and sleazy, but you ought to know that going into them as much as you should know Squirm is about killer worms. Boat Trip is nothing but a silly comedy through and through, but that's all it's meant to be.

Spending the day today watching Roy Rogers on Turner Classic Movies, as it is Summer Under the Stars month at today (Tuesday) is Roy Rogers day. A ton of classic Roy Rogers westerns being shown on TCM for the first time, some even are in the infamous Trucolor that Republic Pictures was famous for. The whole day started at 5 a.m. with "Hollywood Canteen" in which Roy has a small cameo role singing one of his better known cowboy ballads. Then second up this morning it was "Alias Jesse James" starring Bob Hope, Rhonda Fleming and Wendell Corey. Roy has a small cameo role at the end along with Hugh O'Brian, James Arness, Jay Silverheels, and many more television western stars of the 50's. The day continues all the way through 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. My DVR will be working overtime today and tonight.

Just watched Halloween (2007). It was okay. The first half starts off really great as we learn more about Michael Myers' childhood and how he became a disturbed person. By the second half, however, it just turns into a copycat version of every other Halloween film. You know the drill - teenagers making out (with the girl being naked, of course
), babysitters, people trying to outrun Michael yet somehow he still catches up to them, blah, blah, blah. I must admit that I expected more from the imagination of Rob Zombie.

Well, I'm not surprised, seeing how your interest apparently tilts toward such cinematic crapfests as Boat Trip and High Tension.slave2moonlight wrote:you though "Squirm" was great?! Ha, interesting. I doubt that one could hold my interest outside of MST3K.
And I believe I adequately explained why Squirm was a good movie. And MST3K have also parodied Night of the Living Dead, which is a masterpiece in most peoples' eyes. So... now what's your point?

watched Scorched (2002) today on Comedy Central... Underwhelming, clearly. But I enjoyed most of it. John Cleese is absolutely wasted, but everyone else does pretty well. Especially Marcus Thomas (Drowning Mona), who really is the heart of the movie that is too talky but means well. I really hoped this would be Alicia Silverstone's comeback film, but alas, I'll have to keep waiting... B Not funny, but highly watchable.

Oh yeah, they've done some good films. The point is, Squirm stunk, like most of the films they've riffed. The thought of finding anything in that film scary is pretty laughable.Lazario wrote:Well, I'm not surprised, seeing how your interest apparently tilts toward such cinematic crapfests as Boat Trip and High Tension.slave2moonlight wrote:you though "Squirm" was great?! Haven't been on in a couple of weeks due to finals hell and working on Boy Scouts stuff, so there are many movies I've seen....
Hairspray - B+ Good movie, a lot of fun with a good message, and the music is great. The most (clean) fun of this summer. My only objection was the ending - it came too quickly in my opinion. A little two or three-minute epilogue would have been nice.
Hot Rod - B Surprisingly hilarious. Random as all hell and just as goofy, it's Napoleon Dynamite with the cast of Jackass. If you liked Nappy D (which I didn't upon first viewings) and Nacho Libre, give this one a shot when it hits the dollar theater or on DVD.
Stardust - B+ Another surprise. Didn't expect much, but this was one of the best fantasies in recent memory. Completely eclipsing the last two Harry Potter films while not as good as the more-serious Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is what a movie would look like if The Princess Bride and Willow could birth a celluloid wunderkind. See it while it's still out.
Rush Hour 3 - B- Fairly funny, holds it's own with the first two, but really that's not saying much. Lots of fun initially, but not as good with repeat viewings.
Superbad - A My lord, I haven't laughed this hard and this long in a theater since... Damn, I don't remember when. Amazingly raunchy, astoundingly hilarious and not-so-surprisingly heartfelt, this is a very funny movie with a good message (shocking, I know!
) and nonstop laughs. I recommend it to everyone except more sensitive viewers who won't like the profanity and raunch, or people who hated high school. Actually, forget that last part; You guys would love it too.
Balls of Fury - D Amazing - Not even Christopher Walken's prescense can save this uninspired schlock. A flat, edgeless, nearly laugh-free outing that rips off everything that was unfunny about Dodgeball and sets it in the world of ping-pong (who knew such a world existed?). The main star is an awful, obnoxious Jack Black wannabe who has no chemistry with ANY of the actors; It's redundantly clear the role was written with Black in mind. Many of the supporting actors don't try and fail just as predicted, and Christopher Walken's attitude just SCREAMS "I'm outta here as soon as the check clears". True to his fans' word, he WILL do anything for a paycheck. The only chuckles come from a few one-liners from Deidrich Bader, best known as Rex of Rex-Kwon-Do from the earlier mentioned Nappy D. Avoid unless suffering from severe insomnia or prolonged constipation.
Cheers,
JM

just watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) again, as I a trying to watch at least one Disney movie a day before I go to WDW.
Some things I noticed:
-You can see the line where the celing and the wall for the soundstage meet during the battle between the armour and the Nazis, even on the matted widescreen version.
-LOTS of wires can be seen (some nice thick piano ones when Ms. Price is first trying to use her broom) pretty much consistantly for all effects throughout the film (and I don't have an HD TV).
-when one of the suits of armour takes his helmet off you can see he has no real arms.
and there was some other stuff I saw but can't think of now.still I love the film more than I hate it, so I shouldn't complain.

Watched a couple of my favorite Disney live-action films:
The Cat From Outer Space - starring Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, McLean Stevenson, Jesse White, Harry Morgan, Roddy McDowall and a host of others. This is the story of a flying saucer piloted by Jake the Cat, and all the troubles he causes around an Air Force base. One of my favorites.
The World's Greatest Athlete - starring Jan-Michael Vincent, John Amos, and Tim Conway. This is one of those silly stories that is part-Tarzan, and part-Olympics, all stirred up into this funny, non-offending movie that was probably as much fun to make as it is to watch. Another of my favorite films.
The Black Hole - starring Anthony Perkins, Yvette Mimeaux, Maximilian Shell, Ernest Borgnine and featuring the voice of Slim Pickens as Bob. I remember showing this film as a projectionist and the one thing that I still remember is the wonderful soundtrack. The orchestrations are very memorable while the movie is not. The special effects for their time were pretty good, but don't hold up well these days. A lot of things don't make sense, and I think that Disney should seriously think about remaking this film and doing it right.

Wow, I'm going to have to keep my eye out for the first! I don't think I ever noticed that before! The second one is one of my favorite "goofs" to look out for, and the third is also one I've never seen.Flanger-Hanger wrote:-You can see the line where the celing and the wall for the soundstage meet during the battle between the armour and the Nazis, even on the matted widescreen version.

Also, I totally agree with the idea of remaking The Black Hole, Bill. I'd have rather seen a Black Hole remake last year than a Shaggy Dog one!

The last legion
I only went to see it because Colin Firth is in it (
love him!!) and I like movie set in the old Rome, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. The movie was actually really, really good!!
The story is good, it never gets boring, the actors are all well cast in their roles, and the fighting scenes are great. Not as bloody as 300 for example, but story-wise ("How did Excalibur get stuck in the stone?") it's much better and Colin Firth and Ashwarya Rai (as a warrior!) rock!
