Hey there, I just joined less than 24 hours ago but haven't yet taken the time out for any formal introductions, so here goes:
21 years old, UK resident, and not really with that huge a deal to my own 'Disney Story'. The company, along with all the various features and creatures that it entails, has been a massive part of my life since as far as back as I can remember. I grew up with the standard Disney classics, attended a screenings of Oliver and Company, the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, the Lion King, Pocahontas and the Hunchback of Notre Dame upon their initial releases (along with re-releases of the Rescuers, the Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians and the Fox and the Hound), went to Euro Disney soon after it opened, and hoarded pretty much every Disney video which was issued in the early-to-mid nineties. Like most precocious kids, I went through a phase upon hitting my teens in which all things Disney were regarded as uncool and unworthy of my viewing pleasure...blah, blah, blah...but glad to say I was over that by the age of 17, and that in recent years my love of Disney has been renewed with more fervour than ever. I do, however, regret a lot of the decisions which the company, as it stands, has made of late, such as the decision to abandon 2D animation and hitch a ride upon the 3D bandwagon, and their compulsion to drag out their timeless and not-so-timeless classics alike with all that direct-to-video fodder...but those things for another time, another discussion thread. I didn't come here to stir up trouble.
The Disney character to whom I've dedicated the most time, money and collecting energy is easily Donald Duck, whom I firmly regard as the single greatest fictional character ever to receive creation, whilst Modern Inventions is one of the finest examples of film-making I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. If I were to be locked away in a cellar for half a century or so, and could only have a TV set and five or six films down there to keep me company, that short, despite its skimpy length, would stand a good chance of being among them. As my user name might indicate, I'm also something of a Three Caballeros fangirl, a delightful (if disjointed) little feature film which I'd known about for yonks but only relatively recently had a chance to see for myself. I'm always on the look-out for memorabelia featuring Jose/Joe Carioca, Panchito and the Aracuan Bird to sit alongside my ever-increaing line-up of Donald items, but aside from a couple of postcards with Donald and Jose, my search has been largely fruitless.
Some of my other favourite Disney films include Bambi and Fantasia, though as things go I like devoting my attention to the 'underdogs' of Disney's cannon...hence, the Fox and the Hound and the Hunchback of Notre Dame also have a place up there in my heart with the best of them (by contrast, I'm less enthusiastic about some of the key figures in Disney's so-called Renaissance of the early-90s - oh sure, I totally respect the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast as exemplary pieces of animated film-making, but if you're looking for Aladdin or Lion King fandom...look elsewhere

). The Fox and the Hound is one of the very few films, Disney or no, to have me in tears every time I see it, but then again I'm a real sucker for that sort of thing. As for the Hunchback of Notre Dame...well I'm speechless. When I first saw it, it disturbed me enough to be written off as one my least favourites. In the summer just-gone-by, I noted that a ten-year-gap had passed and decided to give it another chance. So I rented the DVD and was blown away. Beautiful animation, lovely songs (A Guy Like You notwithstanding

) and undoubtedly the darkest and most mature storyline that Disney have tackled since...well, Pinocchio. Sure, it's not overtly loyal to Hugo's novel, particularly in its conclusion, but all things considered I find it hard to see how it could have been any darker. And then there was Judge Claude Frollo...he truly sent shivers rolling down my spine. Brilliant. I love him. He makes all other Disney villians look like pretending ninnies.
Other than Hades, that is, for whom I also have nothing but respect and admiration. So evil and yet so charismatic...Hercules is another one of my personal favourites, mainly on his account, but also because the animation and voice-work rock, and Megara is one of the most engaging and courageous Disney heroines you'll find.
Well, I guess I should stop rambling. I've been checking in at UD regularly as a place to read objective Disney DVD reviews, but only recently decided to check out the forums. They seem promising, so I've decided to stay. (I do, however, hope to keep my own Disney DVD collection minimalistic, with space only reserved for my
favourite favourites, but I doubt that approach will work out in practice

)
Not much else to say. Picked up the Bob Thomas
Walt Disney biography and hope to start reading it soon, but ta ta for now, y'all.
PS: Oh yes, and I love 101 Dalmatians. Can't tell you how miffed I was when Disney decided to delay its Platimum Edition release by at least a year. Oh well, as long as the Disney Store promise to stock a nice Sgt. Tibbs plushie when ever it is released, I can hold on.
