WHOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!! This is EXCELLENT news!!! I hope and pray that there will be more titles added to the series to even it out (how about 6 more to make it a nice 20?). If they do that, then that means that Alice in Wonderland, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and other titles will get platinum treatment due to the fact that they got killer laserdisc releases. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!

I, too, find it odd that Fantasia's being re-released when the Collector's Edition was so excellent. Perhaps they're just taking the original supplements from disc 3 of the anthology and just making it a re-issue like with Bug's Life.

I'm also excited that I won't have to wait as long for The Little Mermaid and Cinderella like I would have before. Personally, I think Pinocchio will be next year's March Platinum release, especially since the film's already gotten a definitive transfer over in the UK.

Okay, let me indulge you in my new theroy. After some thought I've come up with the current guess that Bambi will be released to DVD in March 2004.

The Bambi sequel "Bambi and the Great Prince" is reportedly a 2004 project and might even see the big screen. If so, they will want to tie in with that.

Also, Bambi never been on DVD before outside bootlegs and there's incridible demand for it. However, even though it would still be a huge selller there won't be nearly as much demand for something like Pinocchio because there will be the few Average Joes who have the Limited Issue (or more likely Gold Collection) and won't feel the need to double dip.

And really, it just makes sense for spring release since so much is a movie about birth and life and spring is the rebirth and life of the earth whereas a fall release would parallel the state of nature: nature is dead and getting deader, in the bitterless cold, whereas most of Bambi is about birth and life and exploration (aside from the sequences in winter, but admittedly most of it is in the spring and summer.)

And, of course, Aladdin has October 2004 booked so they can't use that slot for Bambi's launch. I was hoping for Aladdin in March (it being my favorite movie of all time regardless of what I say elsewhere.) But at my last check Disney's IMAX web site says nothing re Aladdin debuting on the giant screen this fall (Disney's opting for Young Black Stallion on Christmas instead) and IMAX's web site lists Aladdin as "2004" with no date. Therefore, it can't launch in March because they have to push it on IMAX a while -- supposing it does launch in December 2003 on IMAX, a December-March theatrical-to-video turnaround is way too fast for any Disney movie. (Okay, Mighty Joe Young did it, and The Princess Diaries went from August to December, but something of Aladdin's high caliber will almost surely not have a four-month video turnaround even if it's from the much-less-grossing IMAX theaters instead of regular ones.

Could be. Although maybe they might hold off while they consider my title suggestions for the sequel - Bambi 2: Bambi's Revenge & Bambi 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Anything that will get me Aladdin on DVD faster is a good policy.

With all this great news I'm grateful that I'll be graduating from college soon. By the looks, I'll definitely be needing the extra money to purchase all these animation greats.

With the recent release of many of our favorite classics to DVD, has anyone heard any news or rumors of a future chance of Escape to Witch Mountain or Return to Witch Mountain?

Soon as I know what the gameplan is. Although I fear we might not get an absolute timeline through 2007 as Disney doesn't want to have to make a big deal about possibly changing plans again in the future. Still, if there's a title coming in March, it will likely be announced by this fall.

"The Walt Disney Co. announced last Thursday that it will step up the release cycle for its "Platinum Collection" of limited edition animated classics. Speaking to investors, Disney chairman and CEO Michael Eisner revealed that the company will double its Platinum DVD output to two titles per year, one to be released in March and another in October. Additionally, the titles will be available for two years (versus the current one) and will be put on moratorium for five years. What this ultimately means is that Disney will go through its entire library by 2007. Disney also believes that HD-DVD will have a firm foothold by then, thus allowing them to start all over again with the Platinum line. Look for these Platinum Collection titles over the next 3-4 years: 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, Bambi, Cinderella, Fantasia, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and Sleeping Beauty.

That order is a little better. It doesn't look good for Sleeping Beauty though! It looks like each of these will only be released once more before they expect to release them on HD-DVD.

Does this mean that the Vault Disney titles will no longer be available after a certain date, or does it simply mean there will be no new Vault Disney titles?
If the former is the case, I better get me that copy of The Parent Trap soon!

Neither. It's not really news either, as I reported so much several months ago. The Vault Disney NAME is no more. Love Bug and 20K Leagues are identical in design, but are being called SPECIAL EDITIONS. DavisDVD is a little slow on this one, but that's forgiven since they cover all DVD and not just DISNEY.

I'm not really sure what to make of it, because it makes it sound like they're discontinuing the type of DVD, when in reality they're just discontinuing the name/label.

With the new Platinum release schedule, Disney claims to have the collection finished by 2007 with two a year, but with the addition of the four new titles, it could only release one title to be done by October 2007, but with all fourteen as part of the collection, it would not be finished even with the new plan until March 2009. What's up???

I think what they mean is by 2007, all their animated classics will have been released to DVD, as if they're pretending the Limited Issues never happened.

Hypothetical:

Spring 2004 - Aladdin
Fall 2004 - Bambi
Spring 2005 - Cinderella
Fall 2005 - Little Mermaid
Spring 2006 - Jungle Book
Fall 2006 - 101 Dalmatians
Spring 2007 - Lady and the Tramp

I guess that's what they mean? By then the 10 original titles of the collection are released, as Platinum Editions. I'm not really sure how Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty fit into this. I think as I believe I mentioned before perhaps those ones won't be reissued until the cycle restarts. Of course, fall 2007 is a rather rosy prediction for HD-DVD, so who knows? Right now, I don't even think Disney knows what the heck they're going to do.
