Just my opinion, but I will think that we should all avoid this "Panther" remake like the plague it spawns.
Steve Martin is no where near the talent that Peter Sellers was. Sellers will always be Inspector Clouseau.
Also Deathie Mouse, the movie "Inspector Clouseau" was not, and is not, in the "Pink Panther" series. It was made by a totally different company and concerns a totally different story.
"The Pink Panther"
"A Shot In The Dark"
"Return of the Pink Panther"
"The Pink Panther Strikes Again"
"Revenge of The Pink Panther"
are the five 'Panther' movies in the series with Peter Sellers. "Trail of the Pink Panther" was sort of a tribute to Peter Sellers after he passed away. It was made up of a lot of outtakes and scenes from 'Pink Panther' movies to tell a story about the supposedly missing Inspector Clouseau.
Why Hollywood thinks they have to remake every classic movie is beyond me. Look how they have ruined "Dr. Doolittle", "Cheaper By The Dozen", "Bad News Bears", "The Longest Yard", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and they probably will have ruined "Fun With Dick and Jane".
Just shows the lack of originality of Hollywood nowadays. They are afraid to try anything new and try to stick the unsuspecting public with a familiar title that they hope will bring some money into their coffers.
In my opinion, and that is because they have yet to remake a classic that is worth a hoot, I say we avoid them and watch the original at home on DVD.

No, Hollywood has always been remaking films. I mean, why did they have to remake Ben Hur or Cleopatra? Or remake High Society from The Philadelphia Story. Or countless untold remakes and sequels. Even "trash" like House of Wax was already a remake long before the recent House of Wax was made (which has little in common with the original anyhow, which brings me to my next point)dvdjunkie wrote:Why Hollywood thinks they have to remake every classic movie is beyond me. Plus, most of the remakes you mention aren't really remakes. No one can even pretend that Murphy's Dolittle has any connection to Harrison's. They're just using the name for, in effect, cheap recognition and this marketing purposes. They're not remaking the same story, they're going in totally new directions and therefore, they still are "original".
Just as "original" as making a new film from a book is anyway. Is making a film based on a TV series a remake or not? Surely its no different from making a film based on a pre-existing book or comic? Take films like The Dukes of Hazzard from the list (which are arguably not remakes, as they are in a different medium), and the number of actual remakes is small, just as small as in the 50's, 60's and 70's I would wager.
And its not just Hollywood - Chicago is a film (Chicago) of a musical (Chicago) of a film (Roxie Hart) of a stage play (Roxie Hart) of a film (Chicago) of a fictional novel (Chicago) based on a non-fiction book (Roxie Hart*). Phew!
* The Book was non-fiction, but the character names had been changed in order to protect the author from legal proceedings.

But "Cheaper By The Dozen", "Bad News Bears" were not remakes.......
"Cheaper By The Dozen" just is by the same company and # of kids.(wich is why I think they should have stayed with the working title "Baker's Dozen")
"The Bad News Bears" is really just a new film in the bunch with the same title.
But this Panther film is not a remake but a new begining to the panther films I geuess sortof like the "Batman Begins" film.

How can you say the Bad News Bears was not a remake, It is the same story(with a little changes and additions) Most of the players had the same names, The same results during the season and playoff game.) It is definatley a remake.
Cheaper by the Dozen I will not say if it a remake only because I never saw the origional.
Another remake coming out is Mine,Yours and Ours which Is definatly a Remake. They may change the story a little but it is still a remake

Remakes are fun. It gives you a chance to see another director's perspective of the story, and in extremely rare cases, are somewhat better than the original (The Man Who Knew Too Much and The Ten Commandments come to mind). A remake of a film doesn't make the original any less of a film. It doesn't taint it in any way. It's simply another person's take on the film. Though half the time it's sually an unnecessary take, like House of Wax (Paris Hilton and acting should not be in the same sentence).

Well, I got this the other day. In the booklet it says that over 150 theatrical shorts were made. Perhaps they are intended to be matted for theatrical presentation?ichabod wrote:The complete collection is available here in the UK:

But for some insane reason they are in a dummy 16:9 aspect ratio.
It only contains the Pink Panther cartoons - none of the supporting character cartoons and they all start with the theatrical opening. It contains only 124 theatrical cartoons made in the 1960's and 1970's. I don't know where the other 26+ shorts are, but MGM seem to have stopped where they did for a reason.
As for Japan having a 10 disc set, perhaps they are all DVD5s instead of DVD9s and the UK set is pretty packed per disc. The last disc also has all the Pink Panther and related film opening animations too (as well as an appalling looking opening to the Pink Panther tv show)
