Yea me too, I agree! But you know, it doesn't really matter which films "beat" others, all that matters is that you watch and enjoy the movies that you like! :)

I think that what appeals most folks to the Shrek franchise is its parodying of Disney films (this is also from the Disney execs POV as well) What people dont see until you actually see the film (especially Shrek 2) is how much heart the film is able to have and still be comedy with a deep theme (the inner beauty deal) behind it all. Which is why I was so glad to see this film in theaters.

Of course the previews tell you something different :) And the insane advertising of the film was like Disney back in its golden age

Anywhos I was upset about Finding Nemo ousting Lion King (2D screwed from then on) But it didnt upset (more like surprised) me when Shrek 2 now claimed the new spot. For one thing, it had a good summer spot and sequels have a tendency to attract (especially those loyal to the original: makes me wonder if Spiderman 2 will oust the already succesful Spiderman 1)

I dont think the Incredibles will oust it but I think it will do well perhaps (between $100-200 mill)

enough of that though - oh yeah my last comment: I think the Shrek franchise should end here. Jeffery Katzenberg is becoming the Michel Eisner of Dreamworks by juicing this for all its worth!

Well it looks like DreamWorks is living happily ever after. This weekend Shrek 2 brought its enormous domestic total to $378,281,000, topping The Passion of the Christ ($$370,069,605) as the highest-grossing movie of 2004 thus far. It also dethroned The Return of the King ($377,027,325) and now sits as the #6 movie of all time domestically and inflation-unajusted. Spider-Man and The Phantom Menace are next on the hit list.

Shrek 2 was okay. But that's about it. People seem to be clamoring for anything CGI right now and will see anything CGI no matter what, apparently and then when the next CGI movie comes along and everybody rushes to see it then everybody is duped into thinking, "Wow! Greatest movie ever!" until six months later when the next CGI flick comes along. Is it really hard for people to recognize the pattern that's occurring here or is the public's collective memory really that short? Sensory overload and Mike Myers milking tired potty humor jokes for all they are worth does not equal quality. The whole "inner beauty" thing may be true but the way the Shrek movies deal with it is very trite. "Look, Shrek and Fiona decide to stay ugly because if they're good looking then people won't see their inner beauty! Look! Shrek and Fiona decide to stay ugly again! We're not like Disney movies. Disney movies are bad because everybody looks so perfect in them and nobody can be perfect can they? So you really should like our film." And there was nothing original about a plot where in-laws don't get along at first but then learn to love each other but people act like it is.

I saw Shrek 2 because I was drug along to see it by some relatives and I left partway through to go watch "Lorenzo" on another screen and when I got back to the Shrek screen I asked my nephew if I had missed anything. He rather sleepily and blandly said, "No."

This sucks. This really sucks. The worst thing is, there are still a lot of countries that have not shown Shrek 2 in theatres yet. Oh, man... I'm gonna faint... can Titanic keep its throne?... If Shrek 2 gets #1 in the US or even worldwide, it will stay on as the most jaw-dropping incident in the film industry for years to come.

Leave it to an unoriginal, potty-humor-filled, nothing-but-parodies movie to become a popular animated classic.

And then leave its sequel to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time (inflation not taken into account).

Yes, I hate Shrek. And I always will.

And whenever I say this, the reaction is something similar to: "Oh no! He criticized SHREK! He must be against adult humor and high-profile animation!" Yeah, okay.
