I have a feeling that Alice in Wonderland will get the Fall 2010 release to tie in with the DVD of Time Burton's Alice in Wonderland.Uncle Remus wrote:I'm shocked by the news as well. I think the line-up will end up like this:
Dumbo - Spring 2010
Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 - Fall 2010
Alice in Wonderland - Spring 2011
Beauty and the Beast - Fall 2011
Aladdin - Spring 2012
The Lion King - Fall 2012
Alice in Wonderland doesn't seem like the kind of movie to promote during the Fall/Christmas shopping season. However, it could be likely for Alice in Wonderland and Fantasia to switch places. I see Fantasia being released in Fall 2010 to celebrate it's 70th Anniversary, whereas Alice in Wonderland will be released in Spring 2011 to be closer to its 60th Anniversary.

Pardon my language, but I'm NOT waiting 'till f*cking 2011 for Beauty and the Beast. Disney better have something up their sleeves (like 3 or 4 Diamonds/Platinums a year).Uncle Remus wrote:I'm shocked by the news as well. I think the line-up will end up like this:

So, based upon my guide to all the animated classics on DVD, Dumbo is joining an elite ilk of classics that have gotten a trio of DVD releases.
Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Mulan - all have had 3 DVDs, except the limited issue DVDs were identical to the Gold Collections, only the moniker was changed.
Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove - only two classics to currently have three different DVDs, not just by namesake.
Now, I hate to be conspiratorial, but John Lasseter is really pushing the Blu-ray format as a revolution.
He also considers Dumbo to be not only the best Disney film, but one of his top-ten films of all time (animated and not).
Any coincidence Dumbo is becoming only the third classic to get three distinct DVDs, and is getting Diamond Edition Blu-ray despite not being one of the originally selected 'ten platinum films', especially when the last installment is only three years old, and there are other Disney films who haven't gotten new treatments in ten years?

I was completely shocked and disappointed to read this as well. I have never seen Fantasia or Fantasia 2000 in their entirety, and I was holding off on doing so in anticipation for their much-talked about re-releases. I figured it would make owning the films even more special. Maybe to hold me over I'll see if I can track down a copy of The Fantasia Anthology.
I would like to see TLK released before Aladdin, though. Aladdin didn't sell well the first time around and was in print for so long that getting a re-release so soon after it went OOP wouldn't seem as special. While I think would look excellent in Hi-Def, TLK would too and is a more popular title.
I was wondering the exact same thing. Actually a few years ago when I was in FYE I found both the 60th AE of Dumbo as well as the BTE both used for the same price, and I opted for the 60th AE only because of the Dumbo II preview. I'll probably wind up keeping it for that, unless they add it to this new edition and have an accompanying introduction or featurette explaining why it was never put into production (if only...). Disney better have some kickass bonus material if they want people to buy this set.blackcauldron85 wrote:I was going to ask if I should sell my 60th Anniversary Dumbo DVD now, but part of me wants to keep it forever for the Dumbo II preview.
I can see that happening, and I wouldn't be disappointed at all. Sure, Alice got a great 2-Disc Masterpiece Edition in 2004, but it would be great to see what else Disney adds bonus feature-wise. I think the main reason I would be okay with this, though, is because I favor Alice to Dumbo. Don't get me wrong, both are excellent films and I can watch them again and again, but I just like Alice better for some reason.DisneyLuver wrote:I have a feeling that Alice in Wonderland will get the Fall 2010 release to tie in with the DVD of Time Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

Same here. I recently (like last month) turned down a copy of Beauty and and the Beast I found used for $20 in excellent condition with the slipcover because I figured a new release was coming next fall. (That's what we all expected.)zackisthewalrus wrote:Pardon my language, but I'm NOT waiting 'till f*cking 2011 for Beauty and the Beast. @Neal: I agree with your "conspiracy"
Personally I'd like them to take care of Hunchback and Hercules before re-releasing Dumbo after the current edition as been out a mere 3 years.

Well, this is a surprise, but a relatively happy one. I hope that Fantasia at least gets a platinum edition sometime down the line, though, in all fairness, a bit further down the life. The Jonas Brothers must be struggling to come up with something for the all new music-video! They must find it shocking that there are no lyrics to make into a pop song!

I also hope that Alice in Wonderland still gets a platinum or diamond release, not so much because of the labelling (hardly, actually), but mainly because it simply needs some better bonus features than the Masterpiece Edition (I'm too lazy to elaborate and will frankly just let Kelvin do his spiel
), and unless a "digital copy" is included, a family title such as this which is a non-platinum/diamond these days is pretty much automatically a 1 discer. Same goes for pretty much everything else that's not platinum and worthy of a re-release (Hercules, Hunchback etc).

Wow, if there's one thing that can be said of Disney, it's that they're unpredictable. Dumbo is not one of my favorite films. I find it cute, but not much more than that. That said, I do recognize its historical significance in the Disney canon and always felt it should be a Platinum. I'm sure the BD transfer will be stunning, and I look forward to the new supplements created.
Like most people, my head is reeling trying to figure out Disney's intentions and schedules. Is the Platinum Collection dead or being continued concurrently with the Diamond Collection? If it's the latter, that would give a little more credit to that one site (was it play.com?) that listed unrealistic releases like The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Platinum Edition. Disney may just be adding more titles to the PEs while films that have already been PEs will become DEs. If the Platinums really are dead, however, then where's Fantasia going to go? A fall 2010 release makes sense on one hand since fall is the time when all studios re-release their big catalogue titles. On the other hand, that's a time when Disney chooses the most marketable films to re-release, which Fantasia certainly isn't. It's a big deal for film/Disney fans, but the general public wouldn't care, and the toy possibilities aren't very endless. Then again, maybe Disney won't care since they'll be dominating toy shelves with Rapunzel at that point. Hmmm....
As for Alice, I would love love love it if it were released fall of 2010. Not only would that mean I'd be getting it sooner, but it'd mean that Disney would pull out all the stops in its promotion and merchandising campaign. My local Toys 'R Us always has a massive section towards the front of the store devoted to the latest marketable franchise (for example, there's a large G.I. Joe aisle there at the moment). Ever since Cinderella's release, that aisle has been devoted to the latest Fall Platinums (with the only exception, I think, being The Jungle Book). Walking into that store and being met with a humongous billboard and shelf of Alice merchandise would send me into hysterics, probably. I still don't think we'lll see this title till March 2011, though, but let's see.
So with Dumbo and Alice being given lavish treatments, that means the only Walt-era, non-anthology animated classic left on the sidelines is The Sword in the Stone. I'm not a big fan of that film, but it does make me feel sorry for its fans.

I'm glad you feel sorry for me because I would love for Sword in the Stone (and several dozen other Disney titles) to get a special edition.Disneykid wrote:So with Dumbo and Alice being given lavish treatments, that means the only Walt-era, non-anthology animated classic left on the sidelines is The Sword in the Stone. Edit: A REAL special edition. Not one with less substantial bonus content and a recycled transfer. Maybe in 2013 for the 50th Anniversary?

I always read these boards, but I rarely post. This Dumbo news has me really upset. I don't really care for this movie or Fantasia. What is making me angry is the possibilty that Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King might be pushed back. I started collecting Disney movies late and missed out on those two. I decided to wait for the rereleases instead of buying them from Amazon sellers. To think I may have to wait longer is firing me up. Just my two cents, but Disney better not do anything stupid.

I guess this means B&tB has been pushed back? That sort of sucks.

Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.
